PokerStars World Cup of Poker - Frequently Asked Questions

The PokerStars World Cup of Poker is an absolutely free competition among national teams of poker players. The opening rounds of the World Cup of Poker will be played on PokerStars. Once the field is narrowed down to four, the remaining teams will be treated to an all expense paid trip to London, courtesy of PokerStars. In London the action really heats up as the final four teams battle it out for ultimate bragging rights, PokerStars gear and $125,000 in cash. The final round, scheduled for May 16-19, 2005 will be taped for television broadcast.

United States World Cup of Poker Teams

Due to the large concentration of PokerStars players in the United States there will be four teams representing the USA in the World Cup of Poker. The four teams will include the top 3 finishers from the state qualifiers and a TeamUSA, player selection described below.

Please note that all matches are Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em.

The road to the World Cup of Poker...

STEP 1 - Selecting the 51 State Teams

The top 2 Tournament Leader Board players from each state are automatically qualified to play on their state's team. TLB player standings are based on the points earned during the period January 1, 2004 - December 31, 2004.

**Win your way in!

For some states, based upon population, a player will first play in a satellite which will award entries into a state final. The top two finishers in the state final will win a seat on their state's team.

For the remaining states, a player will play in a direct qualifier, the winner receiving a seat on the state team. Each of these states will have two direct qualifiers.

To register for your state's 50 FPP buy-in qualifying event please visit your PokerStars game client and click "WCP" then "USA States". Once in the "USA States" lobby find and click on your state's tournament and then click "register". If the "WCP" tab does not appear in your Lobby then please contact PokerStars Customer Support.

Visit USA American Poker Teams for a list of players who have already qualified for their state's team.

STEP 2 - Round-robin tournaments to narrow the 51 state teams to 16

The 51 state teams will be broken down in to 16 regions (13 regions with 3 teams, 3 regions with 4 teams)

The states team who win each regions round-robin match will move on to the final 16.

STEP 3 - Final 16 play down to the final 4

Each of the remaining 16 teams will play one heads-up match to narrow the field to 8.

The final 8 will play a second round to narrow the field to 4.

STEP 4 - The Final 4

The final 4 will each play one match. The winner of each match advances to the World Cup of Poker.

The two losing teams will play a final heads-up match; the winner claims the final World Cup of Poker USA state entry.

STEP 5 - World Cup of Poker

The 3 teams left standing will each choose 1 additional player from their state. This will make up the final 5 man roster from each state that will play in the World Cup of Poker.

TeamUSA - The fourth team to represent the USA in the World Cup of Poker will be made up of the top 2 finishers in a separate 50 FPP buy-in qualifier, 2 Top remaining Tournament Leader Board Players, and a nominated player, decided by the team captain in consultation with PokerStars.
