Aussie Millions Poker Tournament 2006
Held at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, the 2006 Aussie Millions attracted players from all over the world who battled for millions of dollars in prize money. In 2005, the prize pool reached more than AUD $2.6 million, and the 2006 figure was even higher, with the Main Event paying out an incredible AUD $3,063,528 in prize money. Scores of PokerStars players qualified online and took part, making the Crown Casino the place to be for the poker world.
A total of 418 players contested the No Limit Hold’em Main Event, each paying AUD $10,000 to enter, and the tournament was won by Team PokerStars Pro Lee Nelson. Born in the USA but based in New Zealand, Lee is a regular on the Australian poker scene and won a huge AUD $1,295,800 for first place, plus the title of Aussie Millions Champion. He took a 3:1 chip lead into the heads-up finale against 21-year old American Robert Neary, and was able to make his advantage pay - scooping one of poker’s biggest prizes outside of the USA.
The Main Event concluded a hugely successful Aussie Millions tournament series that saw events such as Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Omaha and Speed Poker contested. The Crown Casino is 2005 World Series Champion Joe Hachem’s home card room, and the Team PokerStars Pro was in residence for the duration of the series. Joining Joe at the tables were other members of the team, including superstars Daniel Negreanu and Barry Greenstein. The 2006 Aussie Millions was a massive success, and 2007 looks set to be even bigger and better.
