Team PokerStars Pro - Tom McEvoy

Tom McEvoy
Poker author and *World Series of Poker winner
Tom McEvoy was tired of working for The Man, so it was good that he got fired from his accounting job while he was in his thirties. He grew up playing penny-ante poker with his grandmother and took quite a beating in those days. My, how times have changed. Since then, McEvoy has played at every limit you can imagine. He's gone on to become an accomplished poker writer and player. He has numerous poker titles to his name, both in the game and on the shelf. He has authored or co-authored twelve books on poker strategy and has won many a tournament, including the World Poker Championship and three World Series titles. Tom plays on PokerStars as Tom McEvoy.
Tom McEvoy is one of the best-known names in poker. Virtually all successful poker players have read one or more of Tom's six books: Tournament Poker, How to Win at Poker Tournaments, Championship Hold 'em (with TJ Cloutier), Championship Omaha (with TJ Cloutier), Championship No-Limit and Pot-Limit Hold 'em (with TJ Cloutier) and Championship Stud (with Max Stern and Linda Johnson).
Tom didn't set out to be a poker player. He began his professional life as an accountant. However, he quickly discovered that he could make a far better living (and probably a more interesting one) at the poker tables, and moved to Las Vegas in 1979 to pursue a full-time poker career.
Tom specialized in tournaments, which were far fewer in those days. In 1983, just four years after beginning his poker career, Tom won his first World Series bracelet - and no, it wasn't in the main event. Tom won the Limit Hold 'em event and $117,000 in prize money. Six days later, he went on to win the most coveted title in poker, the *WSOP $10,000 Championship Event, along with $540,000 in prize money and his second of four World Series bracelets. He went on to win the World Series Razz title in 1986 and the World Series Limit Omaha title in 1992 (against his friend, Berry Johnston). He has eighteen other final-table appearances at World Series events, and a total of 27 money finishes.
Tom's poker books are required reading for serious poker players, covering a wide range of topics from general poker strategy, starting hands and money management to reading players and taking poker thinking to higher levels. He has been a featured columnist for Card Player magazine for eight years, sharing poker knowledge in his Tournament Poker column every other week.
In addition to poker, Tom has a keen interest in backgammon, fine dining and movies. He is a voracious reader, favoring fantasy and horror - his favorite author is Stephen King. Tom is also an avid stamp collector, history buff and collector of dragons.
Tom is a true gentleman of the game, with an unquestioned reputation for integrity as well as world-class poker. We are proud to have a player of Tom's caliber, both as a player and a person, as a member of the PokerStars team.
