Thanks to poker’s global growth, Angel Guillén from Mexico City is part of a new breed of players arriving on the scene. He may be fairly new to the game, but his tournament results to date show he is one of the best and most promising players Mexico has ever produced.
Angel’s first taste of top level poker came in January 2009, at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA). He was able to hold his own in one the toughest fields in world poker, and finished in a creditable 51st place for $27,500. It was to be a turning point for Angel, and since then his results have got even better. Next was a final table appearance in Season 2 of the Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT) in Punta del Este, where he finished third and took home $99,920.
The 2009 World Series of Poker* was huge for Angel. First up, he finished second in a $2,500 No Limit Hold’em event, good for $312,800 in prize money. Most players would have been satisfied with this result, but just 10 days later Angel went one better. A field of 1,534 players assembled to play Event 32, the $2,000 No Limit Hold’em, and three days later Angel was the last man standing. He won $530,548 in first place prize money and the coveted gold winner’s bracelet, taking down a tournament at the world’s premier live poker event. He’s had a consistent run of results since then, especially on the Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT), with highlights that include a 2012 win in a High Roller event in Colombia. Angel also ran deep in the high-level Main Event of the PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP), finishing 15th for an impressive cash of $61,500.
Having studied Economics at University, Angel is a shrewd investor in stocks and shares, and in his spare time he enjoys a variety of sports and hobbies, including tennis, travel, reading and movies. He is very proud to be a member of Team PokerStars Pro and plays online using the screen name: ‘angelguillen’.
