Team PokerStars Pro - Bill Chen

Bill Chen
Bill Chen graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991 with a PhD in math and started experimenting with how advanced arithmetic could help improve poker skills. He began working for a financial trading company that encouraged poker playing amongst its staff, believing the game to be beneficial to the performance of their employees. Bill was about to prove that his poker theories were most definitely a formula for success.
Bill made his first World Series cash in 2000 when he almost made the final table of the $1,500 Ace-to-Five Lowball event, finishing 11th for $2,855. He spent the next few years sharpening his skills at small events across California, before returning to the WSOP* in 2005 and earning two cash finishes. It was at the 2006 Series though that Bill would finally see his research pay dividends. He made it to three final tables, two of which were bracelet wins. He earned a combined total of $786,129 for victories in the $3,000 Limit Hold’em and $2,500 Shorthanded Hold’em events. When added together with earnings from cashes in other events, his total 2006 World Series winnings came to over $800,000. He also performed well in 2007, cashing in four different events. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Bill’s game is that he’s found success in a wide range of poker variants, making him a dangerous all-rounder. As well as Hold’em, he’s cashed in events covering Stud, Razz, Omaha and Lowball.
Away from the table, Bill co-authored the book ‘The Mathematics of Poker’, which helps players see that poker is essentially just a game of numbers. He is also still involved in the financial world and continues to develop quantitive models related to how poker can be applied to the industry.
While many seasoned pros believe that success at poker comes only after years of practise, Bill has proved that it’s also possible to apply specific mathematical approaches to the game and get paid off handsomely. He is a member of Team PokerStars Pro and plays online using the screen name ‘Bill Chen’.
