British player John Duthie worked in the television industry before becoming a poker pro, acting as both director and producer on award winning UK programs like ‘Clocking Off’ and ‘Silent Witness’. He’d always played poker as a hobby, but would soon go on to become one of the most important people on the European circuit.
Although he’s mostly now known for being the man behind PokerStars hugely successful European Poker Tour, it’s easy to forget that John has many achievements as a player. After years of success as an amateur, he gained instant fame in 2000 when he became the first poker player in the world to win $1,000,000 in a televised poker event. John has managed to follow this early result with a string of impressive cash finishes and final table appearances at events around the world. In 2005, he played in the World Series and made the final table of the $3,000 No Limit Hold’em event, finishing 9th for a cash of $55,750. He also came close to winning his first bracelet at the 2009 WSOP*, finishing 2nd in the $10,000 World Championship Heads-Up event for $386,636. John has some impressive online results too, including a 2nd place finish in the $25,000 Heads-Up event in the PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker: All Stakes in April 2009, good for $250,000.
In 2004, John was able to use his knowledge of poker and television production to create the EPT, launched in association with PokerStars. In a matter of just a few years, John’s hard work has helped make it Europe’s premier tour, and one that rivals the biggest tournaments held in the US.
Whether at the poker table or away from it, John Duthie is a man held in high regard by pretty much anyone who plays poker at a professional level in Europe. He is a member of Team PokerStars Pro and plays online using the screen name ‘JohnDuthie’.
