Before he started playing poker full time, Juan Maceiras studied Law at University back home in his native Spain. He then moved to the United States to take a course in International Business at Lindenwood University, in Missouri. Although his sister had taught him how to play poker when he was younger, it was during his time at Lindenwood that he started to master the game in which he now makes a living.
After building his bankroll in various local tournaments around Spain, Juan started to make waves further afield, and it was on the PokerStars European Poker Tour where he got the breakthrough he wanted. He made the final table of EPT Barcelona in Season 4, taking home $88,584 for a ninth place finish. The following year he entered the EPT Warsaw Main Event and finished sixth for $148,196 - the biggest cash of his career so far. There have also been cash finishes at EPT San Remo and EPT Prague, worth a combined total of $49,474. He also travelled to Las Vegas in June 2008 and won a $1,000 tournament at the Bellagio, good for prize money of $80,000. Elsewhere, Juan has clocked up a string of impressive results online in many of PokerStars biggest events. He won the Wednesday Quarter Million in January 2009, for a cash of $55,999. There have also been cashes in the Sunday Million, the Sunday Warm-Up and the Nightly Hundred Grand.
Already a name to look out for, Juan will no doubt have his sights set firmly on becoming one of Spain’s best ever players, and has stated that he’s looking forward to representing the team at the world’s biggest live events. He is a member of Team PokerStars Pro and plays online using the screen name ‘juanmaceiras’.
