In modern poker terms Rino Mathis is a veteran player. He’s been on the scene since as far back as 1991 and is one of Switzerland’s most accomplished and experienced players. Before poker he played chess and backgammon to a high level, before pursuing the bigger rewards offered by the world’s most popular card game. He has paid his dues on the European live poker circuit over many years, and he remains a keen student of the game and an all-round poker fanatic.
Primarily a live player, Rino has cash finishes at tournaments all over Europe, including Austria, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. He has played on the PokerStars European Poker Tour, cashing at EPT Copenhagen for $7,752. He’s also taken his game across the Atlantic, cashing in the big tournaments at the Bellagio, as well winning $35,814 for finishing 18th in the World Championship $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha at the 2008 WSOP*. He’s won numerous tournaments, and the Bregenz Open in Austria is a favorite. He’s also gone deep at the Master Classics of Poker in Amsterdam, finishing in third position for $95,646 back in 2002. Rino has well over half a million dollars in tournament winnings earned on the circuit in places like Vienna, Salzburg and Baden-Baden. His career record shows he knows European poker inside out, and he’s been a great ambassador for Swiss poker over the years.
Away from the tables Rino likes to cook and is a connoisseur of wine, and plays squash and loves spending time with his kids. But even when he’s not playing poker he’s involved in the game, running a poker news website and being heavily involved in the Swiss poker community. Rino is incredibly proud to be a member of Team PokerStars Pro and plays online using the screen name ‘Rino Mathis’.
