Steve Paul-Ambrose

Before exploding onto the poker scene, Steve Paul-Ambrose studied Science and Business at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Like most college campuses, his was full of people playing Texas Hold’em and it wasn’t long before he began playing the game too.

Even though he’d heard his uncle and brother talk for hours about poker hands they had played, Steve had never really given much thought to trying the game for himself. But when he and his college roommates saw Team PokerStars Pro member Chris Moneymaker win the World Series Main Event in 2003, he picked up a deck of cards and began practicing. Inevitably, he found himself playing at PokerStars and spent the next few years honing his skills.

His bankroll grew steadily, and by late 2005 he’d managed to win a seat at the prestigious PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas. He went on to claim the title and first place prize money of $1,388,600 the following January. Just like Moneymaker, Steve had turned a cheap PokerStars satellite into a life-changing payday. Since then, he’s continued to cash in major events around the world. He made a big impact at the 2007 World Series, reaching the final table of the $5,000 Mixed Hold’em event. He was eventually eliminated in 4th place, earning an impressive $146,259. This was followed by a 3rd place finish in the $5,000 Hold’em event at the Bellagio Cup III, good for a further $97,460.

In his spare time, Steve likes playing golf, reading books, cooking and spending time with his fiancé.

After his success in the Caribbean, Steve could have turned out to be nothing more than the latest hotshot young player to win a big event before quickly fading back into obscurity. Instead, he’s proved to the world he has what it takes to make it as a full time pro and continues to be a major threat at any tournament he enters. Steve is a member of Team PokerStars Pro and can be found playing online using the screen name ‘Stevejpa’.
