World Championship of Online Poker 2003

Event 10: $500 Limit Holdem

Players: 626
Prize pool: $313,000

HOW TOUGH WAS THIS FIELD?

You got an idea of how tough this field was when none, zero, nada, zilch of the 626 starting players were eliminated in the first hour. In fact everyone had at least 680 chips at the first break. AMAZING!

Sure the blinds were low in comparison to the 2,500 beginning stack, but still, you may never see that again. As most tables probably played at least 60 hands in that first hour, to have NO ONE even close to going out is unheard of.

When TEAM TJAM went out in 10th, this event crossed the nine-hour mark.
The brutal warfare to get here was finally over. Time to make some real money.

FINAL TABLE: 30 min. levels. 6k/12k blinds.
Seat 1: osten (el segundo) (22,304 in chips)
Seat 2: get crunk (brighton) (401,160 in chips)
Seat 3: Busterboy (DuQuoin) (76,736 in chips)
Seat 4: Stomark (Atlantic beach Jacks) (143,744 in chips)
Seat 5: mcintyre (new london) (62,964 in chips)
Seat 6: imSMARTurDUM (Las Vegas) (409,280 in chips)
Seat 7: marcelka (Frankfurt) (126,778 in chips)
Seat 8: ramabird (el segundo) (30,590 in chips)
Seat 9: actiondonkey (las vegas) (291,444 in chips)

A couple of players just made it on fumes. Those 6k/12k blinds came around too quickly for the short stacks. Someone had to leave real soon.

Is Hand #5 soon enough?

get crunk: shows [Kc Ad] (a pair of Aces)
ramabird: shows [Qc Ah] (a pair of Aces - lower kicker)

ramabird gets a lesson in kicker school. As if he had a choice with so few chips.

Eight handed chip count.

Seat 1: osten (13,304 in chips)
Seat 2: get crunk (311,750 in chips)

Seat 7: marcelka (42,814 in chips)

On the next hand we'd go to seven. Two gone in six hands.

osten didn't learn from ramabird on the previous hand and was outkicked as well.
Will they go for three in a row?

Six handed chip count.

Seat 7: marcelka (74,118 in chips)

Busterboy and marcelka look to be the designated red meat.

On Hand #20 it was decided, marcelka would have to leave the island.

Stomark: shows [Js As] (two pair, Aces and Kings)
marcelka: shows [7s 7d] (two pair, Kings and Sevens)

Oh those darn middle pairs. The raise on the flop might have worked for marcelka if he'd had more chips. Probably not, as Stomark could have called a full bet with second pair, an overcard and a gutshot straight. When the Ace came on the turn no amount of chips would have gotten Stomark off the hand.

It took a long time to get here, but they didn't want to stay long. This is going fast. Six handed chip count.

Busterboy had made an extra $9,000 in real money by keeping his hands in his pockets for the first 20 hands. Now he'd have to play to go any higher.

Busterboy couldn't overcome the huge blinds, however and left on Hand #27 a few minutes later.

In quiet desperation, Busterboy called the raise of his big blind with the computer hand suited. Basically he flopped nothing, but he sent in his last 7,736 in hope of a miracle.

This will be a one-handed chip count as get crunk bails on the next hand.

actiondonkey: shows [Qc Qh] (three of a kind, Queens)
get crunk: shows [Qs Kc] (a pair of Queens)

As he had been for over nine hours, get crunk was kidding as he knew he was drawing dead to a King until the river. Quite a character.

Twenty minutes in, five players out. Maybe they were tired.

Seat 4: Stomark (331,862 in chips)
Seat 5: mcintyre (65,928 in chips)
Seat 6: imSMARTurDUM (690,016 in chips)
Seat 9: actiondonkey (477,194 in chips)

For some strange reason, when actiondonkey took the chip lead away from imSMARTurDUM he wanted to try a four-handed deal. The chip disparity was too great to even figure out who should get what. So they played on.

Although he fought back valiantly, mcintyre wasn't long for this world when the blinds went up to 10k/20k.

Hand #42 was his last.

We've seen all this before, mcintyre defends his big blind with a suited computer hand that flops nothing and he is outkicked. The learning curve is being ignored here.

Seat 4: Stomark (317862 in chips)
Seat 6: imSMARTurDUM (482088 in chips)
Seat 9: actiondonkey (765050 in chips)

Can they make a deal now?

If they'd been able to Stomark would have made some nice extra loot. Instead his cards went south from here on in.

On Hand #50 Stomark only has 35k left and he goes home.

Seat 6: imSMARTurDUM (big blind) showed [9s Jc] and won (115724) with a straight, Nine to King
Seat 9: actiondonkey (button) mucked [8c 6c] - high card King

As so often happens, amazingly in holdem, the card that makes you trips makes someone else a straight. Of course, if Stomark had had a decent sized stack the hand would never have gotten to the river.

As a cute sidelight, imSMARTurDUM checked the river when his straight came just as if he was knuckling the all-in. actiondonkey ALMOST bet his King high with position, which would have delighted imSMART.

Heads up the chip count was:

Seat 6: imSMARTurDUM (429950 in chips)
Seat 9: actiondonkey (1135050 in chips)

Athough a discussion followed, there was NOT a deal agreed to, and the two-man band played on.

imSMARTurDUM said, "now we can discuss something if you would like to pause if not thats ok also"
actiondonkey said, "u r smart, i am dumb .. wanna pause ?"
imSMARTurDUM said, "yes"

PBOCOP [observer] said, "GIVE HIM 50K"
PBOCOP [observer] said, "HA"

actiondonkey said, "ok, let's talk, subject to steve's approval .. same offer"

Send It Here [observer] said, "lol asks for a pause than raises his big blind!"

actiondonkey said, "steve, please pause if smart agrees"

With no deal, actiondonkey got on his pony and started to ride imSMARTurDUM into the dirt.

In quick succession, these are the hands where there was some playback.
In twenty-four hands it was all over.
