World Championship of Online Poker 2003

Event 9: $500 Pot Limit Omaha

Players: 308
Prize pool: $154,000

SHARING THE WEALTH

It took nine events, but finally a player returns to the Final Table for a second time in this event. This is unusual in multi-event poker tournaments, where it's no surprise to see several players make more than one Final Tables. On the contrary, it's expected that the best players will return again and again.

As a comparison, from this year's WSOP, Men Nguyen was 1st twice and 2nd three times in 34 events.

As far as prize money is concerned, out of the over $1.5 million meted out so far, only one player has as much as $100,000. And only a few players have even cashed in as many as three events.

Truly, this is a tournament of sharing the wealth.

When sunseeker went out in 10th, the last nine wanted some wealth to share.

FINAL TABLE: 30 min. levels 1,500/3,000 blinds.
Seat 1: El Blondie (Birmingham) (107,712 in chips)
Seat 2: jimh (Auburn) (83,691 in chips)
Seat 3: Dalton (Espoo) (64,114 in chips) is sitting out
Seat 4: Casper1 (Spooksville) (81,400 in chips)
Seat 5: Rocky River (London) (41,060 in chips)
Seat 6: yoda777 (Berkshire) (91,808 in chips)
Seat 7: CBass (Vandalia) (101,693 in chips)
Seat 8: kiiski (Porvoo) (64,843 in chips)
Seat 9: Big Cy (Biloxi) (133,679 in chips)

With the blinds so low, no one was in immediate danger. Unless of course, since it was Pot Limit Omaha, they flopped the nuts. Then, suddenly, their danger was extreme.

That's how it can go in Pot Limit, everything's fine then BAM your gone.
Like in this hand seven minutes in.

CBass: shows [8d Kc 3s 8h] (four of a kind, Eights)

What a brutal river card for kiiski. He can save some chips if he doesn't fill up. But with the 9 on the river, kiiski has the great pleasure of raising all-in with the losing hand. Cbass, with Quad 8's on the turn is praying for kiiski to make a hand.

The eight handed chip count.

Seat 1: El Blondie (101,712 in chips)
Seat 2: jimh (85,191 in chips)
Seat 3: Dalton (76,114 in chips)
Seat 4: Casper1 (81,400 in chips)

Seat 6: yoda777 (85,808 in chips)
Seat 7: CBass (174,036 in chips)
Seat 9: Big Cy (130,679 in chips)

Rocky River moved up a spot, but remains low man by a wide margin, while CBass takes over the chip lead.

We'd gone to 2k/4k blinds 13 minutes in when Rocky River went on the rocks in 8th.

*** SHOW DOWN ***
Casper1: shows [Tc 7d Ks Js] (two pair, Tens and Sevens)
Rocky River: shows [Kh 4h Jd 8d] (two pair, Eights and Fours)

With an inside straight and Jack high flush draw on the flop, Rocky River decided to go for it. Casper1 has a picture of Casper the Friendly Ghost. It wasn't very friendly of Casper1 to flop two pair and have them hold up.

The seven handed chip count now.

Seat 1: El Blondie (123,712 in chips)
Seat 2: jimh (71,191 in chips)
Seat 3: Dalton (64,114 in chips)
Seat 4: Casper1 (114,460 in chips)
Seat 6: yoda777 (85,808 in chips)
Seat 7: CBass (184,536 in chips)
Seat 9: Big Cy (126,179 in chips)

Anyone of the seven is one hand away from the lead and from elimination.

A few hands later we lost another one.

*** SHOW DOWN ***
jimh: shows [Kh Ks Td Jh] (a pair of Kings)
Big Cy: shows [5d 4h Ac 7c] (a straight, Four to Eight)

This is a classic Pot Limit Omaha confrontation...a premium pair versus an Ace high flush starting hand. The difference was that jimh didn't have enough chips to get Big Cy off nothing but a pair of 4's and a double belly buster on the flop, and Cy caught his straight with the 6 on the turn.

The six handed chip count.

Seat 1: El Blondie (141,712 in chips)
Seat 3: Dalton (60,114 in chips)
Seat 4: Casper1 (114,460 in chips)
Seat 6: yoda777 (83,808 in chips)
Seat 7: CBass (184,536 in chips)
Seat 9: Big Cy (185,370 in chips)

It looks like either Dalton or yoda777 next but it is Pot Limit.

Dalton is was in 6th on this hand a few minutes later.

*** SHOW DOWN ***
Big Cy: shows [Qc Jd Ks 8c] (a full house, Eights full of Kings)
Dalton: shows [Kh 9h 7c Ac] (two pair, Kings and Eights)

This time the high wrap hand by Big Cy got there over the Ace high flush starter. Dalton was trapped by the King on the flop and was dead on the turn.

Five handed, the chip count was now:

Seat 1: El Blondie (153,712 in chips)
Seat 4: Casper1 (112,460 in chips)
Seat 6: yoda777 (77,808 in chips)
Seat 7: CBass (172,536 in chips)
Seat 9: Big Cy (253,484 in chips)

Big Cy gets a little breathing room at the top. And yoda777 is looking for help from THE FORCE.

By the time we'd moved to 3k/6k blinds, yoda777 had received considerable help from THE FORCE and was in 3rd. Was El Blondie next out?

No, it wouldn't be El Blondie. When yoda777 tangled with Big Cy who was running over the table at the time, he lost most of his chips. Hand #56 was yoda's last

yoda777: shows [8h Qs 9c Qd] (two pair, Queens and Fours)
Casper1: shows [2c Kh Ks 5d] (two pair, Kings and Fours)

With the seven on the turn, yoda777 picked up an open-ended straight draw, but it wasn't to be. The Dark Side represented by the unfriendly Casper1 had it way.

Four handed chip count.

Seat 1: El Blondie (27,352 in chips)
Seat 4: Casper1 (71,268 in chips)
Seat 7: CBass (292,896 in chips)
Seat 9: Big Cy (378,484 in chips)

It would be a surprise if this weren't a two-man race from here on.

After a pretty good fight El Blondie leaves in 4th on this hand.

Hand #63

El Blondie [observer] said, "well playeguys"

The gracious El Blondie got stiffed by a spiked Queen on the flop to crack the pocket Kings. But Big Cy couldn't miss a hand at that point.

Three handed chip count.

Seat 4: Casper1 (62268 in chips)
Seat 7: CBass (286896 in chips)
Seat 9: Big Cy (420836 in chips)

Casper1 was grateful for the extra cash for 3rd but he wanted more and almost got it. Then BAM!

By 1:37 in, Casper1 had pulled himself up to this position.

Seat 4: Casper1 (209268 in chips)
Seat 7: CBass (241896 in chips)
Seat 9: Big Cy (318836 in chips)

But that was the high point.

The next two hands were actually BAM! BAM!

The first BAM!

The second BAM! And in a blink of an eye, it's all over.

Big Cy: posts small blind 4000

That's Pot Limit Omaha.

Big Cy becomes the first player in this year's WCOOP to fail to share the wealth by making his second Final Table and winning this one.
