World Championship of Online Poker 2003

Event 8: $500 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo

Players: 283
Prize pool: $141,500

POWER GRID

When Adam&Suz went out in 9th what was left was the power grid for this event. Three of the players were especially grateful to be here as they reside in states contiguous to New York State (one from Massachusetts and two from New Jersey) that we're not taken down in the Northeast blackout.

FINAL TABLE: 30 min. levels. 1k ante, 2k bring-in, playing 6k/12k
Seat 1: take1off (Fairfax) (109,980 in chips)
Seat 2: 55lucky55 (W Yarmouth) (184,313 in chips)
Seat 3: Regency Atlantic City) (44,058 in chips)
Seat 4: Big Cy (Biloxi) (96,216 in chips)
Seat 5: Jeen (Houston ) (99,567 in chips)
Seat 6: acschmo (Atlantic city) (30,712 in chips)
Seat 7: MasonD (nolanville) (71,430 in chips)
Seat 8: RatPack (San Diego) (71,224 in chips)

55lucky55 was still on an 8 1/2 hour rush that had given him, at one point, the most unusual position of double the chips of any other stack in the event.

The rest of the power grid weren't intimidated, however, rushes have to end sometime.

XX RAGED XX [observer] said, "55lucky55 is amazing at this game huh"
XX RAGED XX [observer] said, "he won it last year"

It only took a few minutes for the grid to turn the lights out on one of its dim bulbs.

Big Cy collected 36568 from main pot
acschmo collected 36568 from main pot

Regency didn't have enough chips to lay his Kings down, so he got freerolled by the low draws as usually happens to pocket Kings. When Big Cy caught his straight Regency had nowhere to go but out in 8th place.

Seven handed chip count.

Seat 1: take1off (124,980 in chips)
Seat 2: 55lucky55 (191,313 in chips)
Seat 4: Big Cy (147,418 in chips)
Seat 5: Jeen (78,567 in chips)
Seat 6: acschmo (36,568 in chips)
Seat 7: MasonD (60,430 in chips)
Seat 8: RatPack (68,224 in chips)

The short-stacked acschmo got to move up a spot. Big Cy moves into 2nd, but then implodes, amazingly, barely winning half a pot for the next half hour.

When the antes go up to 2k, bring-in 4k, playing 10k/20k, it's the cue for Big Cy to leave in 7th on this hand.

Big Cy didn't have enough chips to avoid defending his rough low starting hand against an obvious high only from 55lucky55. But the bricks just kept on coming for Big Cy.

Six handed chip count.

Seat 1: take1off (115,776 in chips)
Seat 2: 55lucky55 (178,894 in chips)
Seat 5: Jeen (102,268 in chips)
Seat 6: acschmo (17,408 in chips)
Seat 7: MasonD (25,930 in chips)
Seat 8: RatPack (267,224 in chips)

Hanging on by his fingernails, acschmo moves up another spot. And RatPack is the first player to pass 55lucky55 all day. Is lucky's rush finally coming to an end?

On the next hand, acschmo has risen as far as he could and doesn't waste any time trying to go higher.

With 55lucky55 also having pocket 8's, acschmo was nearly drawing dead for the high and was dead when lucky's flush came.

The five handed chip count is basically unchanged from the six handed except that MasonD is now low stack by a wide margin.

Seat 1: take1off (113776 in chips)
Seat 2: 55lucky55 (190598 in chips)
Seat 5: Jeen (100268 in chips)
Seat 7: MasonD (37634 in chips)

Nobody makes more straights with garbage starters than 55lucky55. Once again the low draw freerolls to victory over a starting premium pair.

Four handed chip count.

Seat 1: take1off (127,776 in chips)
Seat 2: 55lucky55 (222,232 in chips)
Seat 5: Jeen (106,268 in chips)
Seat 8: RatPack (251,224 in chips)

It's starting to look like a two-man game.

It takes only a few more hands to get down to the last three power brokers.

For the next half-hour of jockeying, it was 55lucky55 who was drawn out on. As we went to 15k/30k, this was the chip count.

Seat 1: take1off (282552 in chips)
Seat 2: 55lucky55 (160500 in chips)
Seat 8: RatPack (264448 in chips)

RustyJay [observer] said, "SPIRO!!!!!!" (55lucky55)
RustyJay [observer] said, "what happened??"
$kgb{||}kgb$ [observer] said, "each one of the opponetns caught a straight against him"

From here on, however, take1off suffered a power failure, and was gone in 20 hands. Mostly, take1off's chips went to RatPack the new power on the grid.

No low hand qualified

This is the hand that drives Stud Hi/Lo players to drink. Starting with the best hand high and low, with a suited A 3 5, take1off has to watch while RatPack catches perfect perfect meanwhile take1off gets quadruple bricked.

Heads up, the chip count is about 4-3 for RatPack. Does 55lucky55 know his daylong rush is over for sure?

He must know something, because a few hands later, down now 5-2, 55lucky55 asks for a deal to get an extra $4,000 over 2nd place money.

55lucky55 said, "u interested in any kind of deal?"
55lucky55 said, "34 thou for u"
RatPack said, "maybe, but we need to be closer"
55lucky55 said, "31 for me"
55lucky55 said, "and we play for the bracelet"

Seat 2: 55lucky55 (207500 in chips)
Seat 8: RatPack (500000 in chips)

They settled on $30,550 for 55lucky55 and $35,247.50 for RatPack.
In the end, it was RatPack who had all the power he needed to win.
