Prize money at the 2004 World Championship of Online Poker surpassed the $1 million mark, following the fourth event at this year's championships. Another $583,000 was added to the prize pool - which now amounts to $1,230.300 through just the first four events. These figures have catapulted the WCOOP into the elevated ranks of the world's largest poker tournaments - along with other prestigious events held at land-based casinos in the United States, Europe, and Australia.
The easy access of online poker to people of all ages and backgrounds in countries all over the globe has contributed to the overwhelming success of this year's WCOOP. All poker players must do is sign onto their computers, download the easily accessible software at PokerStars.com, and start playing poker. Internet poker knows no boundaries. Champions can come from anywhere in the world.
The fourth event at this year's WCOOP, hosted by PokerStars.com, was the $200 buy in No-Limit Hold'em event - with re-buys. It was the first major online poker tournament (with re-buys) in history. A total of 135 places, roughly ten percent of the field, were paid from a prize pool which exceeded half a million dollars.
The ultimate winner was "dblgutshot" from Las Vegas. He collected $109,033 plus the coveted 14 karat gold bracelet awarded to each world champion. The gold bracelet is engraved with the name of the event, along with the PokerStar's 2004 WCOOP trade mark.
Players started the tournament with $2,500 in chips with blinds set at $10-20. It took dblgutshot a total of 717 hands to triumph in the tournament.
The final table was very much an "international affair." Five countries were represented, including Canada, Sweden, England, Norway, and the United States. Seating and chip counts were as follows:
