Seven-Card Stud was the initial introduction to poker for many players. It remains highly popular along the east coast of the United States (and is still the dominant game in land-based casinos in New Jersey and Connecticut). Although another poker variation, Texas hold'em has exploded in popularity all over the globe, seven-card stud retains a very dedicated following of players.
Over 500 seven-card stud enthusiasts entered this year's "Seven Card Stud Online Poker World Championship," hosted by PokerStars.com. Many players put up $300 (plus a $20 entry fee) to earn the honorary title "the world's best online stud player." For others, the entry fee was significantly less. A sizable number of the entrants qualified through online satellites held at PokerStars.com. Many players gained their entry into the tournament from "Frequent Player Points" (FPP) alone - which meant the entry fee essentially cost nothing. The total number of entries - 505 -- made this event the largest seven-card stud events in poker history. Forty places were paid from a prize pool of $151,500.
The winner was "CoolHandTony," who undoubtedly took his nickname from the legendary 1967 movie, "Cool Hand Luke," starring Paul Newman. Recalling Newman's famous line from a prison poker game, "Sometimes nothin' can be a pretty cool hand," Tony collected a very cool $37,875 for first place, plus the coveted 14 karat gold bracelet awarded to each world champion. The gold bracelet is engraved with the name of the event, along with the PokerStar's 2004 WCOOP trade mark.
Players started the tournament with $2,500 in chips with betting limits set at $15-30. Tony a total of 832 hands to triumph in the tournament.
The final table was very much an "international affair." Five countries were represented, including Canada, Israel, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States. Seating and chip counts were as follows:

CoolHandTony came to the final table slightly behind in chips - with $271K to (then) chip leader alkrav, with $289K. It took Tony 16 hands to gain the chip lead and surpass $300K. Less than one hour later, the final hand of the tournament was dealt, as hundreds of observers watched from their computers all over the world:
