World Cup of Poker 2006 - Team Canada

2006 World Cup Team Canada

The PokerStars World Cup of Poker is a competition among national teams of poker players. The opening rounds of the World Cup of Poker will be played on PokerStars.com. Once the field is narrowed down to eight, the remaining teams will be treated to an all-expenses-paid trip to Barcelona, Spain, courtesy of PokerStars. That's where the action really heats up as the final eight teams battle it out for ultimate bragging rights, PokerStars gear, and $200,000 in cash. The final round will be taped for television broadcast.

Canada World Cup of Poker Teams

Due to the large concentration of PokerStars players in Canada, there will be three teams representing Canada in the World Cup of Poker. The three teams will include the top two finishers from the province qualifiers and Team Canada. The player selection for these teams will be described below.

Please note that all matches are Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em.

The road to the World Cup of Poker...

STEP 1 - Selecting the Eleven Province Teams

Each province team will initially be three players: the TLB winner from that province for the calendar year 2005, and the winners of two FPP satellites. The TLB champion will be the province team captain.

Win your way in!

To register for your province's 50 FPP buy-in qualifying event, please visit your PokerStars game client and click "WCP" then "CAN Provinces". Once in the "CAN Provinces" lobby, find and click on your province's tournament and then click "register". If the "WCP" tab does not appear in your Lobby, then please contact PokerStars Customer Support. Visit the Team Canada Schedule page for a schedule of Canadian qualifying matches.

STEP 2 - Round-robin tournaments to narrow the eleven province teams to two

The eleven teams will be broken down into two regions.

Group 1: Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, the Territories
Group 2: Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia

Each province will play a "team match" against the other teams in its group. A "team match" is a set of heads-up contests between corresponding members of two teams.

The team that wins the most matches advances immediately to STEP 4. In the event of a tie between two teams, each team captain will nominate one player and there will be a "Single Match Shootout" to determine the group winner. In the event of a tie between three teams, each team captain will nominate one player and those three players will play in a one-table freezeout to determine the group winner.

Once the two winning teams have been decided, a second TLB leader and a celebrity player will be added to both teams. Those two winning province teams have now secured their place in the "Canada and Pacific" division.

STEP 3 - The formation of Team Canada

If you missed your chance to qualify in the province matches, you still have a chance to qualify for the World Cup of Poker's Team Canada.

Once the two province teams have been established, one more Canadian team will be formed. PokerStars will offer nationwide 50 FPP satellites. Two players will qualify for Team Canada via those satellites. The remainder of the team will be comprised of the top two 2005 TLB leaders from Canada and one player appointed by PokerStars.

STEP 4 - "Canada and Pacific" Division

The two province teams and Team Canada will join Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa in the "Canada and Pacific" divison. Those teams will compete in events until one team remains. The winner out of that group will advance to the live final in Barcelona, Spain.
