The World Cup of Poker began with 57 teams.  Only eight would have the chance to make it to the live finals in Barcelona, Spain.  The chance to win big money, play poker on TV, and win an international championship made the stakes as high as they could be.  Here’s how the teams from each division won their trips to the championship finals.

USA Division—It was nip and tuck in the Division Finals.  Heading into the final matches, it was a neck and neck race between the first national team from the USA and the state qualifiers from Louisiana.  In the end, the national team edged Louisiana by one point and advanced to Barcelona.

Canada Division—In Canada, the national teams would not fare as well.  The province qualifiers from Newfoundland stepped up front and never looked back.  When it was over, the Canadian team from Newfoundland had once a decisive victory and earned its place in the finals.

German Division—The same scenario played out in the German Division.  The province team from Bayern scored an eight point victory over a German national team.  The Bayern province team will join the seven other finalists in Barcelona in September.

Britain/Ireland Division—It was a much closer race in this division.   Team England was looking to make a return trip to the finals and looked as if it had a good chance.  In the end, however, Team Ireland scored a key victory to slip past Team England and put Team Ireland in the finals for the first time.

Europe Division I—This division hosted a field of tough Scandinavian teams, all of whom were tough and unpredictable.  It was a close race for the top spot, but ultimately, the team from Iceland took the top spot and will head to the warm confines of Spain in September.

Europe Division II—The winners from this division have the shortest trip to the finals than any other team.  Team Portugal edged Team Spain to win an unofficial Iberian Peninsula championship and win its spot in the World Cup of Poker finals.

Europe Division III—This match is still undecided.  Teams Hungary and Romania ended their days in a tie.  A heads-up playoff match between the two teams will take place soon to decide who will go to Barcelona.

Rest of the World Division—This division had more teams than any other and also hosted two-time champion Team Costa Rica.  Sheer determination and skill pushed Team Mexico over the top and gave it a chance to represent the Rest of the World in the live finals.
