World Poker Tour 2004 - Day 4

Day 4 of the $25,000 World Poker Tour Championship began at noon on Thursday with the 31 remaining players eyeing two prizes: a share of the $8 million prize pool, and a seat at the WPT final table and an appearance before millions on TV.

These 31 players had survived a starting field of 343, including almost all of the top professional players in the world. They had outlasted the likes of Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan, and were in the money in the largest payout poker tournament (in fact, the largest payout of ANY tournament) in history. Among them: Don (Goose Bumps) Lambertus, who won his WPT Championship seat in a 200 Frequent Player Point tournament, and Rich (gotmilk) Grijalva, who won his seat in a cash satellite.

Action started promptly at noon, with Goose Bumps in 24th place on a relatively short stack of T294,000 and gotmilk in 8th place with T722,000. Goose Bumps was anted off for a while, whittling his stack below T200,000. However, he doubled-up when he picked up pocket Ks and was called by AT. A few hands later, about 40% of those chips moved to gotmilk, when Goose Bumps called a reraise and folded on the flop. Soon after, Goose Bumps was back around T350,000 when his QQ stood up against an underpair.

gotmilk continued to grow his stack, moving over the magic million mark to T1.4 million, until an unfortunate confrontation between his AJ and Matt Matros' TJs. With about T400,000 in the pot, all of the money went in on the turn on a board of QJ9x with 2 spades, giving Matros a pair, and open- ended straight draw and a flush draw. The river brought the 8 of spades, making both the straight and the flush for Matros and costing gotmilk over T800,000.

Goose Bumps weathered a string of terrible hands, but was still in at 16 players when Mohamed Ibrahim was eliminated, bumping up the minimum prize money to $83,165. He was finally eliminated in 14th place, taking home a huge prize on a total freeroll.

gotmilk continued to recover, and made the final table of 10 players with a respectable stack of about T1.7 million. In the key hand for him, gotmilk picked up AA and doubled through T.J. Cloutier by flopping top set against T.J.'s backdoor flush draw and straight draw (T.J. was eliminated a few hands later with 77 vs. JJ).
