Vedast Sanxis wins first PokerStars Estrellas Poker Tour event

ps_news_thn.jpgYou must be used by now to reading about new tours set up around the world by PokerStars. And without wishing to blow our own trumpet, you should be familiar with the fact that these new events take off very nicely. So it was with the new Estrellas Poker Tour in Spain, which has just finished its first event in Malaga.

PokerStars qualifier and Intellipoker writer Vedast Sanxis, 22, from Valencia was the man who lifted the trophy, collected a €60,970 first prize - and secured a seat at EPT Barcelona next season. He had to beat 260 other players from 25 countries to scoop that lot, and he was justifiably proud but also modest in victory. "I can't believe it. It's like a dream. And I had luck in the key moments," said Sanxis, who now plans to attend the next Estrellas event in Alicante in May.

He defeated Germany's Fabian Deimann heads-up but it was a tough final table, which was set only when Javier Martínez Pérez busted in ninth. His elimination gave us these eight eager beavers....

The final table action was fast and furious with the first elimination, of César Ordoñez, coming soon after the final kicked off. He had J♣Q♠ but found he was up against Florian Lehmann's A♣J♦. Nothing came on the board to save him and César was out in eighth place for €5,700.

Bust outs then continued down to three handed, where David López, 36, who runs a fish refrigeration business in Algeciras, and who was the chip leader as the €1,000 event went into its final day, came third for €25,080. That left Sanxis and Fabian Deimann heads-up for the title.

The Spaniard won a big pot with K-K against Deimann's A-3 and it was all over shortly after. The money went in with Sanxis held A♦5♦ against Deimann's Q♣8♠, and the flop settled things rather quickly... [10d]6♦2♦! That crowned the first ever Estrellas Poker Tour champion and sent Deimann home to Germany with a respectable €39,900 for coming second.

Team PokerStars Pros Juan Maceiras and Juan Manuel Pastor both competed at Malaga but didn't get past day two. Also disappointed was Friend of PokerStars and sports commentator Poli Rincón, the former Spanish international footballer, who was eliminated on the first day.

Juan Manuel Pastor said: "This first Estrellas event been a huge success. All the players I've been talking to have been saying that it's actually the best event they have ever been to in Spain. I can't wait now for the next event in Alicante and I'm sure it will be a sell-out."
