Alex "AWice" Wice made PokerStars' VIP Club Supernova status in less than 40 hours.
Chew on that for a second. When the clock ticked over to 2013, Wice started playing and didn't stop until he was a Supernova. It's never happened faster. It's never happened with more drama. It's never happened with such pomp and circumstance.
This year, PokerStars hosted a race to Supernova contest. When the race began, Wice and player MouldyOnions went out neck and neck and stayed that way for the next 40 hours. In the end, Wice crossed the 100,000 VIP Player Point line first, less than 6,000 VPPs ahead of MouldyOnions. Wice said on 2+2 he had been 50-tabling and sweating gallons through his hands. The only time someone has put together more VPPs in one sitting is when Team Online's George Lind amassed 100,000 VPPs in one day playing WCOOP satellites.
Wice's efforts paid off.
PokerStars awarded him a bonus of 100,000 Frequent Player Points to spend on anything he wants in the PokerStars VIP store. He'll also be commemorated in a special 2013 deck of commemorative playing cards featuring PokerStars' top players.
Beyond that? Well, Wice is on pace to become the first Supernova Elite of 2013. It takes 1 million VPPs to get there, but that's where the both the glory and the big prizes are. Whoever gets there first gets a full day in which he will earn double VPPs and FPPs. He will also be a face card in that commemorative deck.
All of that said, Wice doesn't have this locked up yet. MouldyOnions is close on Wice's tail and has vowed--though he didn't win the first battle--to win the war. You can keep up with their race on the VIP Leaderboard page.
Both you and MouldyOnions should know this: Wice is a guy who sets his mind to something and does it. The money means less than the accomplishment itself. When I first met the guy, we were at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. PokerStars had hosted a contest that featured ten hard math questions from math wizard Bill Chen. Wice won the contest with seemingly little effort.
Now, he's putting together a show for the ages. Congratulations to him for an amazing race. Best of luck to both Wice and MouldyOnions in the race to Supernova Elite.
