Danzer and Duhamel come close as Matthew 'MUSTAFABET' Ashton wins WSOP Players' Championship

PokerStars player Matthew 'MUSTAFABET' Ashton last night won $1.7m becoming the first European player to lift the one of the most desired trophies in world poker. Ashton came out on top of the $50,000 WSOP Players' Championship beating a tough final table which included Team PokerStars Pros George Danzer and Jonthan Duhamel, as well as the high stakes legend David Benyamine and John 'The World' Hennigan. The 24-year-old, who hails from Liverpool, UK, started his bankroll playing PokerStars freerolls. He's come a long way.

The Players' Championship is arguably the toughest tournament of the summer. It pits some of the best all-round players in the world against each other in a mixed-game melee leaving little room for single discipline specialists. Ashton's name will be added to the David 'Chip' Reese Trophy, one of the top accolades you can ever have as a poker player.

Ashton, who holds a WCOOP PLO bracelet, started his bankroll years ago by playing PokerStars freerolls. It's quite an incredible journey and shows how far hard work and dedication can get you at the poker table. You simply have to read this interview with Ashton back in 2009.

"I normally play the 8-game mix and like to think I'm a good all around player," said Aston, then.

He certainly wasn't wrong. Ashton is the second British player of the series to pick up a bracelet following Barny Boatman's long awaited title win. Ashton won the Season 7 EPT Mixed Games Player of the Year title.
