Tropico: Festival en la Costa (aka 'it's Mexican party time')

If you're reading this blog, you know me as a professional poker player. But what you probably don't know is about my other life as a partner in restaurants and nightclubs. For the last six years, I've been collaborating on projects with some friends I've known since my school days and we have a really exciting event coming up. It's a three-day international music festival called Tropico that will run from December 5-7 in Acapulco. Our venue is right on the beach and we are expecting about 5,000 people for the weekend.

The day we launched our website and announced the line-up, it was a trending topic in Mexico City on Twitter. It's getting some great buzz and people are really excited about it. That's great news for us because we hope to turn Tropico into an annual event. Acapulco has fantastic weather all year, but it's even more beautiful in December, when much of the world is freezing! It's also the first weekend of winter break at the universities and a fun way to celebrate the end of classes. Not only will Tropico have more than a dozen bands performing, but we will also host a variety of different events including pool parties, DJ tents and late-night shows. We have a lot of surprises planned that I'm really excited about.

Does De Leon look like he arranges big music festivals? Well, yes.

I'm passionate about live music and I'm really looking forward to seeing a lot of the acts we booked for the festival. Some of my favorites are Poolside, a dance/disco duo from Los Angeles and our headliner Little Dragon, a Swedish electronica group. Plastic Plates is a fantastic DJ from Australia who has played dates at our nightclubs. I'm also a big fan of Washed Out, a downtempo, chillwave band that has played some big festivals in the U.S. like Outside Lands and Lollapalooza. Every artist we chose for Tropico is someone we really love and I'm really happy to be bringing two acts (Poolside, and Hot Toddy from the U.K.) to Acapulco for their first-ever performances in Mexico.

My partners and I have wanted to produce a music festival for many years now and it's thrilling to see everything finally come together. This time, the location, the date, and the artists all came together in a wonderful way. If you're a music fan or just want to escape to the beach, I hope you join me in Acapulco this December.
