Weekend Review: High stakes, mid stakes, and micro stakes make the headlines

This past weekend was one of the busiest on PokerStars for a while. If the headlines weren't being made at EPT Malta, it was the regular Sunday Majors, or MicroMillions, which came to an end yesterday. So I suppose we ought to start at the beginning.

EPT Malta

EPT Malta came to an end on Saturday night. Actually that's not true, it was 5.07am on Sunday to be precise after an all-French heads-up duel lasted longer than anyone anticipated. It was a tough one for both players involved, but Jean Montury finally got the better of Valentin Messina. It may have been that everyone was asleep when he did it, but there was something about the image posted on the PokerStars Blog that made it worth it, the picture of winner Montury trying to console the exhausted, and defeated Messina.

You can read all about Montury's win in Malta on the Blog, and indeed about the entire festival, which was enjoyed by everyone who played there, as well as those behind the scenes, and of course the winners, among them Dzmitry Urbanovich who won the Special €25k High roller event and then three more titles before the festival concluded (he would come second in another). David Peters too left Malta with a smile on his face, having won the €10K High Roller title late on Saturday.

Meanwhile life in the online world continued uninterrupted with both big stakes and small stakes events getting some attention.

Sunday Majors

The Sunday Million was won by Legadzo who managed to make it a memorable win. Having had a big stack at the start of the final table he then lost it, meaning he had to win the hard way. Kristin Bihr has the full story here. Then there was the Sunday Warm-Up, won this week by AnyGameSir for a first prize of $182,214. Read the full report by Jason Kirk here.

MicroMillions 10

It was also a weekend for MicroMillions, the tenth series of which came to a close yesterday with the $22 buy-in Main Event, won by BgsaPnaples of Canada, who earned a first prize of $110,742. He paid just $22 to play. Anyone else think this is ridiculous?

Actually on this basis the whole serious was ridiculous, both for its popularity and its capacity to turn a few cents into thousands of dollars.
