Belgium's girl gamer shines at Benelux COOP

ps_news_thn.jpgUntil recently, Charlotte Van Brabander was better known for beating the guys at video games than poker. A year ago, at age nineteen, she made a name for herself as a member of a female team who played the game Counterstrike at the World Championship on Online Gaming.

Now Charlotte is turning some of that natural aggression toward a new arena. She came in twenty-fifth in the Benelux Championship of Online Poker that wrapped up on December 21. The ten day series included eleven events and was designed for players in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Charlotte outlasted 278 of the game's toughest players in the Main Event, including PokerStars Team Pros Matthias de Meulder, Christophe de Meulder, Thierry Van den Berg, Joep van den Bijgaart, Ruben Visser, Thierry van den Berg and Pieter de Korver.

Charlotte has been practicing a lot by playing the tournaments in the PokerStars Women's League. She says that the women in the league are more aggressive than the men she's played against. Her belief is that men perceive women to be tight at the table, and she likes to use that image to her advantage when she plays against them. She is currently studying criminology and law at university, so it sounds like she is taking the academic approach to her mental game as well.

Charlotte revels in the challenge of showing that women can be as good as men in video games and poker, and her quote on the subject sums it up. "Beating guys gives me an extremely happy feeling." So gentlemen, you've been warned. Charlotte's "happy feeling" is bound to make some of the men at her table miserable at the next event.
