Buniaka bests the rest in May 5 Women's Sunday
The start of May shows quite a bit of excitement on the horizon. As I write, players from around the world are in Monte Carlo - or in transit - for the much-anticipated season finale of the European Poker Tour. Those of us who aren't in Monaco, well, we're living vicariously through the tweets and Facebook updates of those are lucky enough to go.
While the EPT Monte Carlo festival of tournaments will be thrilling, as always, we're also looking forward to introducing a fantastic charity endeavor this month. Keep your eyes on this blog space for the Tuesday announcement. As a hint, Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree started fundraising for her "Race for Life" event just a few days ago to collect funds for Cancer Research UK.
May will certainly be a great month of poker and charity action, but for today, we're focused on the Women's Sunday. Let's look at the numbers:
Total players: 230
Prize pool: $11,500.00
Paid finishers: 36
Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst was in the tournament as a $50 bounty and tough competitor. She made it to 106th place but ended her run there.
The rest of the field worked toward the money portion of the event, and payouts began at about the 2.3-hour mark with AnneBonney24 the first player to cash, taking home $86.25 for her 36th place finish. As the tournament went past the three-hour point, only two tables remained with a group of players anxious for final table action.
The 11th place elimination of billardvamp8 put hand-for-hand into motion, and Agent Chamuko pushed all-in for more than 46K from the big blind with K♥Q♠. Original button raiser Buniaka called with A♠T♥ and only improved on the A♥4♦5♦6♣9♥ board. AgentChamuko was out in tenth place with $184.00.
Cobaka75 controls final table at the start
The final table was then set as follows:
Seat 1: cobaka75 (184,488 in chips)
Seat 2: RocknVanity (42,707 in chips)
Seat 3: Bags&Shoes (52,419 in chips)
Seat 4: Lena-Vova (22,678 in chips)
Seat 5: MegaLidia (126,292 in chips)
Seat 6: Buniaka (174,210 in chips)
Seat 7: SuBliss (8,950 in chips)
Seat 8: JumpImDTramp (47,474 in chips)
Seat 9: Belaen (30,782 in chips)
Short-stacked SuBliss doubled through Lena-Vova almost immediately, which left the latter with less than 12K. Lena-Vova moved all-in on the next hand with K♥T♦, and cobaka75 called with T♠T♣. The board of 2♦Q♦5♣5♦7♥ didn't help Lena-Vova at all, and she exited in ninth place with $218.50.
Two hands later, SuBliss moved again, this time from the small blind with A♦T♥. Original button raiser Buniaka called with J♦3♦ and hit the first card of the 3♥4♥Q♠ to take the lead in the hand. The 8♣ and 6♦ both failed to help SuBliss, who had to leave in eighth place with $287.50.
JumpImDTramp doubled through Buniaka to climb further up the leaderboard, and Belaen doubled through MegaLidia.
Bags&Shoes had been reduced to a stack of less than 14K and pushed all-in from middle position with Q♦T♠. JumpImDTramp called from the big blind with A♣3♣. The flop of T♥8♣5♦ gave Bags&Shoes top pair and a chance to double up, but the 2♣ brought a flush craw for JumpImDTramp. The 4♣ on the river made that flush, and Bags&Shoes was out in seventh place with $402.50.
RocknVanity was short on chips but doubled through Buniaka to stay in action, though still short. Belaen then doubled through Buniaka, and RocknVanity did the same to the detriment of Buniaka's stack.
MegaLidia, who just made a Women's Sunday several weeks ago, took her chance, starting a hand with an early position raise. Cobaka75 reraised all-in from the big blind with 7♠7♥, and MegaLidia called all-in with T♣T♦. The flop gave new life to cobaka75 when it showed 6♠9♠8♦, and though the J♦ on the turn did nothing, the T♥ on the river completed the straight. MegaLidia's set of tens was no good, and she accepted sixth place for $517.50.
Buniaka jumped into the lead by taking a pot worth more than 100K from JumpImDTramp, and Belaen survived another all-in and doubled through cobaka75.
JumpImDTramp lost ground and finally made her move amidst a preflop raising war with Buniaka. JumpImDTramp risked it all with A♦T♦, but Buaniaka had K♦K♠. The board came Q♥J♠4♦9♥4♣, and JumpImDTramp was out in fifth place with $667.00.
RocknVanity was on the short stack and pushed with A♦5♦, and original UTG raiser Buniaka called 22,328 chips more with Q♥J♠. The flop of 7♣Q♠8♣ gave Buniaka the lead in the hand, and the 9♥ turn and 8♦ river let it remain that way. RocknVanity departed in fourth place with $977.50.
Belaen then got involved with Buniaka to see a raised flop of 5♠A♠A♦. Buniaka bet, and Belaen check-called. The 6♣ on the turn brought another bet from Buniaka, and Belaen called all-in with 8♥8♠. Buniaka showed 9♠6♠ for the flush draw, which hit on the K♠ river. Belaen was eliminated in third place with $1,299.50.
Heads-up battle: Poland v. Ukraine
The final two players began their heads-up match with these initial chip counts:
Seat 1: cobaka75 (246,478 in chips)
Seat 6: Buniaka (443,522 in chips)
Cobaka75 was relentless in the first dozen or so rounds, chipping up and eventually claiming the lead. But Buniaka took it all back - and more - with this hand:
Cobaka75 did double up to get back to her heads-up starting stack and then climbed back over 300K, but Buniaka stayed strong from that point forward. Cobaka75 raised the last hand, and Buniaka75 reraised. Cobaka75 responded by moving all-in with A♣Q♠, but Buniaka called quickly with K♠K♦. The board blanked changed nothing with 7♠3♠2♦9♣Q♥, and the kings eliminated cobaka75 in second place with $1,725.00.
Buniaka of Poland won the Women's Sunday title and $2,351.75. Congrats!
