Typhoon Haiyan half a year on

Last November, Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines causing widespread devastation as 175mph winds tore the country apart. More than 16 million people were affected with some 4 million displaced and almost 6 million losing their livelihoods and ability to support their families. It was devastating. But had the international community not rallied, the long-term repercussions could have been so much worse. That help includes the donations made by PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker players and staff.

In response to Typhoon Haiyan, we appealed to the generosity of our players and our own people to dig deep. Rational Group matched the $280,039 you donated to pass on a total of $560,078 to CARE International. We knew CARE would make it count and we'd like to share with you some of the ways they helped those in most desperate need.

• 252,115 people received food relief, plus an additional 3,700 people benefited from cash transfers to purchase food at local markets. Overall, CARE and their local partners delivered more than 1,115 metric tons of food.
• 59,984 people received emergency shelter supplies, including tarpaulins, tools and kitchen sets.
• 57,451 people received high-quality shelter repair kits, including corrugated metal sheets, tools and other items.
• 19,549 people benefitted from cash transfers and specialised training to help them resume their previous livelihoods or engage in new income-generating activities.

We'd like to thank the many Stars and Tilt players who opened their bankrolls to those in dire need. If you'd like to find out more about how your contribution has helped to save lives and rebuild shattered communities then read the full Philippines 6-month Typhoon Haiyan report.pdf. You can also watch the video below from CARE International thanking you for your support.

Rational Group is very proud to help communities around the world and we couldn't have done it without you.

Players were able to donate to the Typhoon appeal through PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker online tournament lobbies.
