MicroMillions 4: haspel has way, wins Event #37 ($3.30+R PLO, 6-max. 2R1A)

March Madness has arrived, with the NCAA college basketball tournament bracket having been set yesterday. All of the selected teams are now envisioning making a run through a sequence of opponents to take the title. Speaking of making a run, it was haspel of Germany doing just that in Event #37 of MicroMillions 4, carrying the chip lead into the six-handed final table and then knocking out all five opponents to claim a $4,548.66 first prize.

The game was short-handed pot-limit Omaha with a $3.30 buy-in and opportunities to take at most two re-buys and one add-on. The guarantee for the event was $10,000, but after the 3,694 who entered took 4,668 re-buys and 1,415 add-ons, the prize pool nearly reached three times that figure, ballooning up to $29,331 with the top 480 finishers scheduled to divide those riches.

By the four-and-a-half-hour mark the money bubble had burst with xBAPBAPx, fifithecat, and WinnerVad near the top of the counts. It then took 90 more minutes for the field to shrink from 480 to 100 players, with xaullin moving in front, xBAPBAPx remaining near the top in second position, and Topvorm moving into third.

As they approached the tourney's eight-hour mark, just 12 players remained gathered around two six-handed tables. At that point LuckyKrs occupied the top spot with almost 8.5 million chips, a little over twice the average stack.

It took about a half-hour more to play down to six, with LuckyKrs falling back to the pack while haspel surged in front by building a stack of more than 17 million. SMayL85 (12th), Smurphtown21 (11th), and 271066 (10th) each earned $249.31 for getting as far as they did, while xaullin (9th), papillon 999 (8th), and WinnerVad (7th) took away $322.64 apiece.

The final table was set.

Seat 1: LuckyKrs (Russia) -- 8,712,327
Seat 2: Topvorm (Netherlands) -- 4,082,750
Seat 3: haspel (Germany) -- 17,679,953
Seat 4: CAHEK72 (Ukraine) -- 10,350,652
Seat 5: player9572 (Australia) -- 6,089,410
Seat 6: Thanos Theo (Greece) -- 1,969,908

It took a couple of orbits for the first final table elimination to occur.

The blinds were 125,000/250,000, and after haspel limped in from middle position, Thanos Theo reraised to 1 million from the small blind. LuckyKrs folded, and haspel called.

The flop came 5♥7♦A♦, and Thanos Theo responded by pushing all in for 719,908. haspel called the bet, showing T♠8♠6♦6♣ for a straight draw. Thanos Theo, meanwhile, had A♣T♣8♥7♥ for top two pair. The turn then brought the 9♠ to fill haspel's straight, and after the 2♠ river Thanos Theo was out in sixth.

Another orbit passed, then haspel again opened the action by raising 2x to 500,000 from under the gun. player9572 then three-bet to 1 million from the button, and it folded back to haspel who called.

The flop came 6♥K♠3♦. haspel checked, player9572 bet 2,375,000, and haspel called. The turn then brought the 5♦ and another check from haspel. player9572 took the opening to bet all in for 1,589,410, and haspel called.

player9572: A♠A♦6♠3♥

haspel had top pair with a gutshot straight draw, while player9572 had two pair with those six and trey kickers. But the river brought the 7♥, again completing a straight for haspel to knock out another opponent.

A half-dozen hands later it was LuckyKrs raising to 700,000 from the button and haspel calling from the big blind. The flop came monotone -- 2♣A♣6♣ -- and haspel checked. LuckyKrs bet 900,000, then haspel check-raised the minimum to 1.8 million and LuckyKrs called.

The turn brought yet another club, the 9♣, and haspel fired 5.15 million into the middle. LuckyKrs raised all in for a little more -- a total of 5,912,327 -- and haspel called.

LuckyKrs had A♥A♦7♣4♦, having flopped a set of aces, but haspel had the flush with Q♣J♣T♣T♦. The river then came the 3♦, and haspel had claimed a third straight victim at the final table.

The remaining trio then played nearly 20 hands, with haspel building up over 38 million while CAHEK72 had about 7.75 million and Topvorm just over 3 million.

Then with the blinds at 150,000,300,000, a hand arose in which haspel opened for 900,000 from the button and Topvorm called from the big blind. The flop came T♠6♥Q♦, and when Topvorm checked, haspel bet 900,000. Topvorm then check-raised all in for 2.13 million even, and haspel called.

Topvorm had K♣Q♣9♦6♣ for two pair, but haspel had flopped a set of tens with T♥T♣8♣3♥. The turn was the 8♠ and river the A♣, and suddenly just two players remained.

Four straight knockouts meant haspel had gobbled up nearly all of the chips by the time heads-up play began, with 41,277,098 to the 7,607,902 of CAHEK72. They'd ultimately play a dozen hands altogether, with chop talk coming up intermittently but never quite reaching the stage of pausing the tournament to make a deal.

The blinds were 200,000/400,000 to start the final hand. haspel raised to 800,000 from the button, then CAHEK72 reraised to 2.4 million and haspel called. The flop came 8♠J♣3♠, CAHEK72 pushed all in for 2,065,804, and haspel called.

It was A♥J♠T♦9♦ for CAHEK72 for a pair jacks plus an open-ended straight draw, while haspel showed Q♠Q♣J♥3♣ for a better pair of queens. The turn was the 9♥ which brought a second pair for CAHEK72. But the 8♦ river made haspel's hand best with queens and eights, and after eight hours and 43 minutes, Event #37 had been decided.
