MicroMillions 5: Five figures of fun for wellingtonwf in Event #61 ($8.80 NLHE)
It was a huge tournament no matter how you looked at it. Five-figure entrants and five-figure payouts. Where in the world can you buy-in to an event for the price of a sandwich and win amounts worth the price of a small car? Only in the PokerStars MicroMillions of course! Event #61 of the schedule was an $8.80 No Limit Holdem Event, which was one of the higher buy-in amounts of this series. It didn't deter a massive field of 10,013 players from turning out with Brazil's wellingtonwf surviving every single one of them to turn $8.80 into over five figures of fun.
The field combined for a prize pool of $80,104 which blew away the advertised guarantee. Among them were a sea of micro-limit grinders taking their shot, with a few experienced campaigners thrown in. We haven't seen too many Team PokerStars Pros in the MicroMillions fields this week, clearly nursing a WSOP hangover, but we did pick up Marcel Luske making an appearance in today's event. Unfortunately the Flying Dutchman was an early casualty.
The players dropped away one by one, until ekores from Romania burst our money bubble, finishing in 1,261st place to miss out on the $14.41 min-cash.
The remaining players locked up a profit and battled their way towards the elusive MicroMillions final table. After close to nine hours of play, the short-stacked Njiaans attempted a button steal for six big blinds with 8♦7♣ but Mr Napattack called in the small blind with J♣Q♦. With a jack on the river for good measure, Njiaans was out in 10th as our final table was formed:
Final Table Line up
Seat 1: wellingtonwf (4,464,149 in chips)
Seat 2: maxperm00 (5,523,088 in chips)
Seat 3: Chiliii (2,818,096 in chips)
Seat 4: _1453_1905 (1,655,646 in chips)
Seat 5: Albandy514 (1,931,681 in chips)
Seat 6: ploukplouk (6,128,095 in chips)
Seat 7: Mr Napattack (10,187,730 in chips)
Seat 8: dekinis (5,055,720 in chips)
Seat 9: Canadian JT (12,300,795 in chips)
With two clear chip leaders in Canadian JT and Mr Napattack, the pressure was going to be on the short stacks from the get-go as the final table blinds kicked off at 100k/200k/25k. And we didn't have to wait long as we saw our first elimination on just the third hand of play.
Action folded around to Chiliii in the small blind who open-jammed all in on _1453_1905 in the big blind. _1453_1905 found A♥9♦ and made an easy call to have Chiliii's J♥9♠ in bad shape, however the board landed J♣9♥5♣3♦4♦ to give Chiliii two pair to eliminate an unlucky _1453_1905 in 9th place for $620.80.
Albandy514 was another short stack to fall, and again the end came in a battle of the blinds. From the small blind, Albandy514 was getting desperate and went with T♠2♠ with ploukplouk taking it on from the big blind with A♠3♠. The board ran out A♥5♦J♥8♣J♣ to see ploukplouk secure the pot with a pair of aces to leave Albandy514 to pick up $881.14 for 8th place.
A huge hand would see big stacks Canadian JT and wellingtonwf clash, with the fall of a turn card deciding their fate:
wellingtonwf had got a little tricky with kings, flopped a flush draw, but connected with a set on the turn to stay in the game with a big double up.
The kings would also prove effective in the very next hand. maxperm00 shoved from mid-position for a tick over ten big blinds with A♥J♣ but Mr Napattack was sitting in the small blind with K♠K♥ and made the call. Again the kings found a set as the board was spread 4♠K♦2♥T♦T♠ to eliminate maxperm00 in 7th place for a nice return of $1,602.08.
Mr Napattack was out in front and further improved that position with a flopped set of sevens against Canadian JT's pocket tens, while Chiliii was sliding back in the other direction. Chiliii made a move with a three-bet shove, but a cruel river ended Chiliii's tournament:
Three jacks for wellingtonwf pipped Chiliii's pair of aces to remove Chiliii in 6th place for $2,403.12 in prize money.
ploukplouk survived with a double holding ace-nine against dekinis' pocket sevens to put dekinis under pressure. dekinis found a spot to three-bet jam all in holding A♥3♦ and looked a good chance to double through Mr Napattack's K♥T♣ but again the poker Gods had other ideas. The board ran out J♠9♣8♦5♥Q♦ to see Mr Napattack river a king-high straight to end the run of dekinis in 5th place for $3,204.16.
Another huge double up went the way of wellingtonwf to shake things up at the top of the chip counts. wellingtonwf re-raised all in preflop with K♣Q♣ as Mr Napattack committed to call with A♠J♦. The board landed 2♣5♥J♣4♦5♣ in another dramatic hand as wellingtonwf rivered a flush to take over the chip lead.
The chips continued to splash around the table as the four players kept up the aggression. wellingtonwf fired two barrels with pure pair before rivering top pair against Canadian JT who held middle pair, before things got even worse for the Canadian. On a flop of 2♥4♦8♠, Canadian JT pushed with 5♥4♥ but couldn't shake ploukplouk from 8♥6♥ for top pair. The Q♣ turn and 9♥ river completed the board to give ploukplouk a big double and leave Canadian JT crippled.
Canadian JT caught one double up but couldn't find a second, all in and racing moments later with K♠J♥ against ploukplouk's 3♣3♦. The board bricked out 4♥4♠Q♥9♥2♣ to leave the treys in front and send Canadian JT to the rail in 4th place for a $4,005.20 score.
At this point, Mr Napattack was the short stack of the three but landed a double up with king-jack turning a pair of jacks to better ploukplouk's pair of deuces.
wellingtonwf then finished off the job on a monotone flop of 8♦6♦9♦. ploukplouk moved all in with Q♣9♣ for top pair but wellingtonwf had that covered with the Q♦Q♠ well in front. The 2♠ turn and J♥ river completed the board, sending ploukplouk home in 3rd place for $6,007.80.
Heads-up chip counts
Seat 1: wellingtonwf (44,862,756 in chips)
Seat 7: Mr Napattack (5,202,244 in chips)
It was a big lead to wellingtonwf and it only took four heads-up hands to see our new champion crowned. wellingtonwf opened with a min-raise before Mr Napattack moved all in. wellingtonwf made the call with A♦6♠ but was dominated by the A♥T♥ of Mr Napattack. The flop of 4♥Q♠5♣ didn't change anything, but the crucial 6♣ found its way onto the turn to put the chip leader one card from victory. Mr Napattack would need to find a perfect ten on the river but the 5♦ wasn't it. Mr Napattack had to be content with $8,611.18 for 2nd place as wellingtonwf took the MicroMillions title for Brazil along with an impressive five-figure score of $11,789.54. Congratulations!
