MicroMillions 5: Nothing skinny about marko_lank's Event #10 (NLHE $1+R 3x-Turbo) victory
Let's face it a dollar does not buy much in today's economy. There is the value menu at your local McDonald's or maybe an item from the Dollar Store but nowhere near the value the 18,716 players in today's MicroMillion 5 Event #10 tournament received. Yes, there were an abundance of players who invested more than a single buy-in (82,992 rebuys and 10,082 add-ons) but with $10,983.77 sitting up top, that alone carried more value than a McValue fry or a package of Smarties (dependant on hunger and sweet tooth levels of course). marko_lank would emerge as the winner after taking over a competitive final table to claim the win and that $10,983.77 first place prize and can now afford to treat this writer to a soft serve ice cream cone to beat this humidity.
After the group broke into the final two tables Rato1984 (Portugal) and IMLegend1989 (Canada) were immediately dispatched in 17th and 18th place ($208.54 each) as the remaining 16 players got a five minute reprieve to think about final table strategy.
Just twenty minutes later with NIQOLAY785 firmly in the chip lead holding 168 million chips, nearly double of second place, the tournament would reach hand-for-hand play. kremlin72 sporting the avatar of the ruthless King Joffery from the popular "Game of Thrones" showed the same mercy he did to Ned Stark. None. With the blinds at 1.6MM/3.2MM ante 320K dev209 made a min-raise from the small blind as kremlin72 shoved for 78 million from the big blind. Holding pocket kings K♦K♣ dev209 quickly called to see the advantage over kremlin72's A♠7♥. That advantage would last until the turn as an untimely ace hit Q♦ J♥ 3♥ A♣ 6♥ shipping the 54 million chip pot to King Joffery's coffers and starting up the final table below:
Seat 1: kremlin72 (105873902 in chips)
Seat 2: cccp551 (15404355 in chips)
Seat 3: marko_lank (90526252 in chips)
Seat 4: Mr CharPokes (62354832 in chips)
Seat 5: robtinnion (27041752 in chips)
Seat 6: mebacks (14792072 in chips)
Seat 7: mehl89 (83137389 in chips)
Seat 8: NIQOLAY785 (168865338 in chips)
Seat 9: selmash777 (39588108 in chips)
marko_lank wanted NIQOLAY785 out of the hand and was not subtle about it. With the blinds up to 2MM/4MM ante 400k NIQOLAY785 no longer the runaway chip leader holding 105 million, would min-raise from middle position as cccp551 shoved from the small blind for 26.4 million and marko_lank felt a twinge of luck coming on with 9♠J♠ and re-shoved for 44.8 million. The starting final table chip leader folded as cccp551 showed A♥T♥ but then watched a nine hit the door card on the 9♦ 3♦ 3♠ 3♥ 4♣ board to ship the 64.4 million chip pot marko_lank's way. cccp551 earned $610.37 in a ninth place effort.
A reminder that this is a turbo tournament
Despite an average stack of nearly 100 million chips, the blinds are even making those rarely seen 25 million chips seem commonplace. Just three hands later shortstacked robtinnion found an opening on the button and shoved for 9.4 million as mehl89 called holding a couple of face cards K♠T♥. robtinnion's Q♠A♦ only led preflop as tens bookended the T♣ 7♣ 9♦ 9♥ T♠ to send the UK player to the rail in eighth place ($915.56).
With the blinds moving up to 2.25MM/4.5MM ante 450K selmash777 would lead off with a shove from UTG for 18.7 million with a small ace 3♠A♠ as the action folded around to mebacks who called from the button holding J♦A♣. While not necessary, mebacks found a pair of jacks on the turn T♥ T♣ 4♠ J♥ A♥ to take down the 47.4 million chip pot. selmash777 traded in the final table seat for $1,525.93 in real money in seventh place.
Former chip leader wakes up
As mentioned it looked like NIQOLAY785's tournament to lose coming into the final table with a commanding chip lead. But, a quick double up and lost blinds send NIQOLAY785 back a few steps. With the blinds moving up to 2.5MM/5MM ante 500K NIQOLAY785 would finally find a way to replenish those lost chips. Watch below:
Pocket aces A♦A♥ usually cure any chip-related ills and did so for NIQOLAY785 who rode the aces to victory over Mr CharPokes' pocket fives 5♥5♠ on the J♦ 8♦ 9♣ 8♥ J♠ board to claim the 83.3 million chip pot. Mr CharPokes found a fresh $2,543.22 shipped after the sixth place finish was finalized.
Easy come Easy gone
Well, NIQOLAY785 did appear to be making a comeback from losing those early chips but five hands later all that work crumbled in one hand by the one player that could do the most damage. The blinds remained level as the two biggest stacks attacked each other preflop. NIQOLAY785 started with a min-raise from the button as marko_lank shoved for the chip leading 187.1 million from the big blind. NIQOLAY785's big slick A♠K♥ was big enough to call. marko_lank's pocket fours 4♠4♦ would close out this 293.8 million chip pot after the turn as a flopped boat 4♥ 2♠ 2♦ Q♦ Q♠ sealed up the win. NIQOLAY785's lost flip ended the former chip leader's day prematurely in fifth place ($3,560.51).
Winning all the big ones
marko_lank came up big against NIQOLAY785 in that tournament changing 293.8 million chip pot. Four minutes later with the blinds still at 2.5MM/5MM ante 500K the chip leader would come up huge again. kremlin72 wasted no time shoving for 96.5 million from the button as marko_lank risked half of that tournament leading stack by re-shoving to get the big blind to fold. Tactic rewarded as mebacks folded and kremlin72 showed the leading A♣J♥ to marko_lank's suited Q♠K♠. Again the door card was kind for the chip leader as a queen laid there Q♦ 9♣ 2♦ T♠ 6♥ to ship the 200 million chip pot to marko_lank as kremlin72 collected $4,577.80 in fourth place.
It would be the marko_lank show from here on out as the Finn held nearly four times the chips of mebacks and mehl89 combined. Eight hands later with the blinds moving up to 2.75MM/5.5 MM ante 550K mehl89 tried to double up a 55.9 million chip stack by shoving from the small blind and getting call by the chip leader. But marko_lank's king high 7♣K♠ was too much for mehl89's T♦Q♥ on the all-low 4♣ 6♣ 4♠ 5♥ 5♦ board sending mehl89 out in third place ($6,612.37) and giving marko_lank another large pot worth 113.5 million chips.
One double up good, two doubles better, third one... not gonna happen
Give credit to mebacks for not laying down after starting heads-up play with a 72.1 million to 535.3 million chip deficit. The UK player would double up twice and cut the disadvantage to 379.2 million to 228.2 million. But, the third attempt did not work out so well as shown below:
Both had pocket pairs and 456.5 million tournament chips found their way into the middle preflop. Pocket fives 5♣5♦ could not work their magic against the pocket nines 9♠9♥ of marko_lank who steamrolled the second half of this final table to the MicroMillions 5 Event #10 victory taking home a whopping $10,983.77 from a one dollar buy-in!
