MicroMillions 8: From rags to riches for NICOAA1000 in Event #71 ($11 NLHE Turbo Super-KO)

Everyone loves a comeback story. This wasn't quite the stuff of "chip and a chair" legends, but it wasn't far off. Brazil's NICOAA1000 was down to around one-and-a-half big blinds during the final table of Event #71 of the MicroMillions 8 series. NICOAA1000 chopped a pot, then doubled and doubled again with just 4♣3♣ against ace-king. NICOAA1000 got back into contention, reached a three-handed deal and then closed it out, with a little bit of luck, in impressive style. NICOAA1000 was able to turn $11 into over four thousand bucks and picked up a healthy sixteen bounties along the way.

Event #71 of MicroMillions 8 was one of the larger buy-ins of the series, but there were a few twists to the format to ensure that the prize pool was shared around and plenty of fun was had. It was an $11 No Limit Holdem Turbo Super-Knockout event, which meant half of the $64,176 prize pool was set aside for bounties. Every elimination was worth $5.25 to whoever was responsible, so just a couple of quick bounties would virtually cover the buy-in.

A total of 6,112 players turned out for the event which paid the top 765 players. Tyler Frost was again amongst the action representing the red spade of Team PokerStars but was an early casualty in this one. A min-cash was worth $9.62 but Portugal's Mr-M3thoD missed out on that by just one place as our official bubble in 766th place.

When Canadian aneet2win was bundled out in tenth place the final table line up was set.

Final Table Line up
Seat 1: lcmi (3,607,452 in chips)
Seat 2: Bar_Suk174NS (7,812,558 in chips)
Seat 3: lm6489 (1,314,620 in chips)
Seat 4: NICOAA1000 (1,447,232 in chips)
Seat 5: nosrefej (6,752,330 in chips)
Seat 6: IPODpoker88 (5,156,966 in chips)
Seat 7: TheSharkAK (2,929,280 in chips)
Seat 8: Coctaine (894,108 in chips)
Seat 9: NerdyNard (645,454 in chips)

TheSharkAK would be the first to fall from the final table, despite four other players shorter than TheSharkAK's stack of ten big blinds. Action folded around to IPODpoker88 on the button who moved all in with TheSharkAK committing from the small blind with 6♦A♥. That was ahead of IPODpoker88's 9♥Q♣ but the board of Q♦2♣6♠3♥T♥ would see IPODpoker88 pair the queen to down it down. TheSharkAK would have to settle with $256.70, and fifteen KO bounties, for ninth place.

NerdyNard would be next to go after blinding down to less than one big blind. That was put in the middle preflop from under the gun with A♥T♥ with three players making the call. The flop landed 6♥5♦J♥ which was good enough for Coctaine to move all in to scare off the other two players. Coctaine shows J♠8♦ for top pair but NerdyNard had plenty of outs to quadruple up. The turn was the 9♣ and river the 5♣ to give the pot to Coctaine and remove NerdyNard in eighth place for $401.10 as well as thirteen KOs.

With seven players left it was IPODpoker88 out in front but Bar_Suk174NS quickly jumped ahead with the elimination of lm6489. From the button, Bar_Suk174NS moved all in for almost fifteen big blinds with A♠5♥ with lm6489 calling for less holding a dominant A♥J♦. lm6489 was in good shape to double up but the poker Gods had other ideas as the board landed 2♣K♥9♥5♠7♥ to spike the five on the turn. Bar_Suk174NS grabbed the bounty as lm6489 picked up $721.98, and six bounties, for seventh place.

NICOAA1000 was down to around one-and-a-half big blinds but doubled up with jack-ten pairing the ten, before next hand getting very lucky with 4♣3♣ against lcmi's A♠K♥. The chips were all in preflop with a three finding its way onto the flop for an unlikely double.

The double ups kept coming with Coctaine staying alive with ace-king against Bar_Suk174NS's king-queen, before lcmi recovered some chips with a double up holding ace-ten against nosrefej's ace-nine.

The comeback of NICOAA1000 continued with pocket queens proving too strong for lcmi's ace-jack, before the two would clash again on the very next hand. lcmi raised all in for a little over three big blinds with A♥7♠ but NICOAA1000 found Q♠Q♣ for the second hand in a row! The board of 8♠9♠T♣3♠J♠ brought a straight for Icmi but that wasn't enough as NICOAA1000's spade flush claimed the bounty. lcmi finished the tournament in 6th place and received $1,042.86 plus eight bounties.

nosrefej was on the short stack and moved all in from under the gun with Q♠J♠. Action folded around to NICOAA1000 in the big blind who was pot-committed with 8♣6♠. The board ran out 9♥6♥2♥4♠3♥ to pair NICOAA1000's six for another bounty collect. nosrefej was left to exit in fifth place for $1,363.74 as well as a tournament-leading 20 knockout bounties.

NICOAA1000 and IPODpoker88 were dominating the action as the other two players were struggling to get involved at all. In fact, Coctaine had barely won a pot on the final table at all, and was blinded down to the point of no return. When the big blind rolled around, Coctaine was forced to commit all in for less with both NICOAA1000 and IPODpoker88 making the call. The two live players checked down the board of 9♥K♦3♥3♦A♣ with IPODpoker88 showing J♥4♠ for just jack-high. Surprisingly neither opponent could better that as their cards were tossed into the muck. That left Coctaine to depart in fourth place for $1,812.97 and eight knockouts.

With three players left, the clock was quickly paused to look at a potential deal. ICM numbers were presented with both short stacks happy to oblige, but chip leader IPODpoker88 wanted at least $4,000 which meant the other two had to fork over an extra $82 apiece. Both players agreed to the request without too much resistance, and with that, a deal was struck with $600, and a couple more bounties, left in the middle to play for.

When play resumed, the players wasted no time in getting their gamble on. First hand back and Bar_Suk174NS opened with a raise. NICOAA1000 three-bet all in and Bar_Suk174NS called it off with A♥J♥. NICOAA1000 showed J♣T♣ and was in trouble. Both players started the hand with similar stacks of about fourteen big blinds, but the cards fell the way of NICOAA1000 as the board landed 5♥3♣2♣7♣5♠. NICOAA1000 made a flush to claim another scalp as Bar_Suk174NS boosted the bankroll with a post-deal total of $3,383.41 as well as eight KOs.

Heads-up Chip Counts
Seat 4: NICOAA1000 (17,156,414 in chips)
Seat 6: IPODpoker88 (13,403,586 in chips)

It was down to the final two, with the two most aggressive players on the table reaching the final stage in what would be an entertaining heads-up duel. IPODpoker88 took over the lead after flopping a set with pocket threes, but from there NICOAA1000 would win six pots in succession to close it out.

It took some luck to do it though, with the game-changing hand coming in a preflop battle. NICOAA1000 opened with a button raise before IPODpoker88 moved all in. NICOAA1000 called it off with A♣8♦ but IPODpoker88 showed A♦T♠ to have one hand on the title. However the board of 8♠2♣2♦K♦6♦ would see NICOAA1000 come from behind again to double through.

IPODpoker88 was crippled to just over four big blinds which were committed next hand with T♠8♣. NICOAA1000 called with J♠8♠ and jack-high was enough on the board of 2♥5♣K♣4♣6♦ to see NICOAA1000 claim the final bounty of the tournament.

IPODpoker88 had to settle for $4,000.98, and thirteen KOs, for second place after a favourable deal, as NICOAA1000's remarkable comeback ended with the MicroMillions title, sixteen bounties and $4,024.88 in prize money. Congratulations!
