MicroMillionsII: vanov04 scoops a victory in Event #48 (PL Omaha Hi/Lo)
Event #48 of the MicroMillions II was the $3.30 PL Omaha Hi/Lo event, and it kicked off in the early afternoon in Europe. By the time registration closed, 5,891 players were sitting at the tables and playing for a piece of more than $17,500 in the prize pool.
Henrique "Henrique.P" Pinho and Andre "acoimbra" Coimbra were the two highest finishers among the PokerStars family, but their efforts fell short of the payouts. Both men were eliminated with about half the field still remaining.
With three players left vanov04 was in full-out beast mode. The Russian had been setting the pace for quite some time, barreling over the field with unrelenting aggression. A bit of run-good here and there never hurts, either. The field was down to 20 players when this big one played out between vanov04 and another of the chip leaders, krogrobi from Slovenia.
With 14 players left, Russia occupied the top three spots on the chip counts, and vanov04 was still setting the pace with his strong play. He was dented in a big pot with johnnyd182, though, and he had slipped into third place as the 9-player field redrew around the final table.
Seat 1: borba fe (Hungary) - 2,340,300
Seat 2: VTIana (Romania) - 1,650,824
Seat 3: johnnyd182 (Romania) - 4,968,819
Seat 4: vanov04 (Russia) - 4,937,778
Seat 5: PapaGusto (Bulgaria) - 2,671,539
Seat 6: Ghoyteep (Russia) - 3,912,754
Seat 7: Olianna (Russia) - 1,425,028
Seat 8: MariaJoana22 (Brazil) - 1,016,546
Seat 9: Joury_G (Russia) - 6,531,412
Nine-handed play lingered for a long while before a crippling pot put the Bulgarian all in for the big blind on the next deal. PapaGusto was given a respectable K♠ K♦ 8♠ 2♠ to start with, and Olianna came along with the A♣ J♥ J♣ 5♦ and a chance at the knockout. The first four board cards came cleanly -- T♦ 7♠ 4♥ 4♣ -- but the river was a disaster for the shorty. The J♠ fell off the deck, and it sent PapaGusto off in ninth place.
In eighth place fell the Brazilian, MariaJoana22. The short stack moved in preflop with A♥ K♦ 7♥ 5♥. Vanov04 got back into the action with a call, tabling A♣ 2♣ 4♣ 6♣. There was a good sweat by the time the river card was dealt on this board: 8♥ J♣ A♠ 9♣ 4♠. Vanov04 found a scoop out on fifth street, and he sent MariaJoana22 to the rail in eighth place.
Once again, the shortest stack was the next to drop out. Borba fe had less than one big blind when he called all in before the flop with A♠ K♦ 6♦ 5♠. VTIana reraised to isolate with A♦ 2♦ 2♥ 3♠, and the two were heads up with borba fe's tournament life hanging in the balance. VTIana found a set straight away on the 2♠ 9♥ 4♠ flop. The turn J♣ and river J♦ were blanks for borba fe, and Hungary's last hope was eliminated in sixth place.
The payouts moved up over $500 for the remaining six players. Two Romanians and four Russians squared off in a furious series of hands that led to a quick finish. VTIana claimed the next victim, as well. One hand after the last knockout, Olianna open-shoved with A♥ Q♠ J♦ 2♠, and VTIana called with K♦ Q♥ 5♦ 3♥ in the big blind. Olianna made two pair on the 5♣ K♥ J♠ 5♥ 6♦ board, but kings up were second best to Olianna's fives full, and the field shrunk to five players.
Ghoyteep was the one on the short stack at that point, and that was a historically bad omen at this table. Joury_G three-bet shoved behind an open-raise with A♠ Q♠ 6♦ 2♦, and Ghoyteep put the remainder in with K♣ J♣ J♥ 8♥. It was Russia versus Russia. When the board ran out 5♠ 6♠ K♠ 3♠ Q♥, Ghoyteep was eliminated in fifth place, good for more than $750.00.
The four men called for the host, and a deal was struck. As the big stack, Joury_G received the most guaranteed money, locking up $2,221.67. Johnnyd182 secured $1,511.61, and both men ended up making fine deals as it turned out. Johnnyd182 was the next to fall when the last of the chips went in with Q♥ Q♣ 2♣ 9♥. Vanov04 and the K♠ J♥ T♠ 9♦ flopped trip kings, and the elimination was sealed on the 6♦ K♣ K♦ 3♠ J♠ board. The deal earned the Romanian more than $500 extra than the scheduled fourth-place payout.
Joury_G's chip lead had been erased by that point, and he could not stave off a third-place elimination. This one involved three players, so we'll let you watch it for yourself:
The chips were nearly even when the heads-up duel began in Russia vs. Romania. The two men put their ~15bb stacks at risk very quickly, and vanov04 was lucky enough to wake up with aces on the final hand. It was A♥ A♠ K♦ J♠ versus A♣ 9♦ 8♦ 3♥, and VTIana could not catch up. The last board ran K♣ 6♦ 4♥ T♣ Q♠, and that was good enough to give vanov04 the title.
VTIana's runner-up finish was worth $1,464.20, the fourth biggest payout from Event #41. Joury_G made the best deal and took home the most money, but it's Russia's vanov04 sitting alone as champion. He earned $2,086.63 in cash for the victory.
