SCOOP: Lucky is as lucky does, Team PokerStars' "LuckyGump" claims Event #17-High title

scoop2009_thn.gifThink of something that goes fast, like say a Lamborghini Diablo and fill the gas tank with rocket fuel and you've got a metaphor for this evening's Event #17 Pot Limit Omaha 6-max with rebuys. If the $1,575 buy in wasn't high enough think of the 161 rebuys the players made during the first hour of the tournament, or the 104 5,000 chip add-ons that 122 players took. Much like the high-end Italian cars the field also sparkled with some of the best online tournament talent who were after a piece of the $580,500.00 prize pool but only 18 of them would take home at least $7,546.50.

Players like high stakes PLO cash game player Richard "CHUFTY" Ashby, MTT master t soprano, newly crowned 2010 Event #8 SCOOP champion BrynKenney, and SCOOP PLO champ Joe "floes" Serock all joined in this high stake game of math and gamble.

Team PokerStars Pros were also well represented by Barry Greenstein (107th place), John Duthie (99th place), Noah "Exclusive" Boeken (89th place), Chris "Money800" Moneymaker (86th place), Jason Mercier (83rd place), Florian Langmann (65th place), George "Jorj95" Lind (49th place), Chad Brown (42nd place), and Humberto Brenes (25th place) would miss the payouts, but Alexey "LuckyGump" Makarov still had some work to do.

On the money bubble check out the Team PokerStars Online player from Russia cast a big enough net to reel in ChanceCU:

Flopped straight for "LuckyGump" with 5♠ A♦ 6♣ 6♦ and by checking the flop allowed ChanceCU holding Q♦ 8♦ 8♥ Q♣ to catch up on the turn 4♣ 3♦ 2♥ 8♣ with a set of eights when all the money went into the middle. The 5♣ on the river sent ChanceCU home on the bubble in 19th place, while Makarov collected the huge 176,104 chip pot.

Ironically, the two players who led most of the tournament prior to the money bubble, CHUFTY and BrynKenney, were among the first to bust out after the bubble in 17th and 16th place respectively.

Halfway thru the 12th hour of the tournament and on the final table bubble rkruok would lead for 5,100 and get re-raised by Skämmes to 18,300. rkruok would make the call to see the J♥ J♦ K♦ flop. rkruok would check as Skämmes bet 22,000. rkruok did not fall asleep and check-raised to 105,600 as Skämmes three-bet to 175,90. With only 1,797 left rkruok made the call holding trip jacks Q♠ J♣ 7♥ T♣ as Skämmes rolled over the cracked aces A♦ 4♠ 4♦ A♠. K♠ on the turn helped no one, but the A♥ gave Skämmes aces full and the 254,394 chip pot. For the bubble finish in seventh place rkruok received $18,866.25 setting up the final table below:

Seat 1: damiancho2 (372987 in chips)
Seat 2: Terken89 (251463 in chips)
Seat 3: LuckyGump (116367 in chips)
Seat 4: Try__An__Hit (199707 in chips)
Seat 5: Skämmes (322905 in chips)
Seat 6: WERPOI (105571 in chips)

Just how many different ways did you want to win?

1,250/2,500 blinds starting off at the final table with the aggressive Skämmes leading out UTG for 6,123 as Terken89 made the call from the button to see a 6♦ T♣ 9♣ flop. Skämmes followed through with a 10,000 chip bet as Terken89 raised to 37,500. Then both would trade bets until Terken89 was all-in and showed a flopped set of tens T♦ K♣ Q♥ T♥ that would need do so some serious fading against Skämmes' flush and straight draws 5♣ J♥ 8♠ Q♣. The flush would hit the 3♣ turn and the moot straight would hit on the K♦ river beating Terken89's set of tens twice, ending his night in sixth place ($26,122.50).

Skämmes slows down for no one

Again with the 1,250/2,500 blinds shortstacked WERPOI tried to come over the top for a bet of 20,869 of yet another raise to 6,123 by Skämmes. The Swede would make the call to see a 3♣ T♣ A♣ flop. WERPOI pushed in his remaining 12,706 chips as Skämmes made the call holding 4♠ 5♥ T♦ 7♠ for a pair with a gutshot straight draw as WERPOI turned up top pair A♠ K♥ Q♥ Q♣. 4♥ on the turn gave Skämmes two pair which improved to a straight by the 6♣ river sending WERPOI home in fifth place ($37,732.50).

Living up to the name

There's a myth that flopped straights never get there, add this hand to that urban poker legend as Try__An__Hit did indeed hit the nut straight holding 4♥ 9♥ J♦ 5♦ but Makarov with a flush and a gutshot straight draw J♠ 3♣ A♠ A♥ would spike the higher straight on the river 8♠ T♠ Q♣ 8♥ K♣ to take the 359,928 chip pot and knock Try__An__Hit out in fourth place ($49,342.50).

Then again, maybe a flopped straight can hold

Seven hands later with the blinds moving up to 1,500/3,000 damiancho2 was down to just 22,416 chips facing a pot raise from LuckyGump decided to go with the 9♥ A♠ 3♠ T♣ in his hand and shoved all-in. LuckyGump with over a million chips at this point made the call turning up J♦ 9♠ 6♠ T♦. This time the flopped straight would hold, as Makarov coasted to the win on the 5♣ 8♥ 7♣ 3♦ A♦ board claiming the 46,332 chip pot and eliminating damiancho2 in third place ($75,465.00).

Six figures richer

Our final two Alexey "LuckyGump" Makarov and Skämmes assured themselves a six figure payday as the Swede asked Makarov if a deal was available, despite the sizable chip lead. The answer was "no ty" and the players started up heads-up play with :uckyGump in the lead 1.1 million to 260K shortly after hour number 12 dinged on the play clock.

Five alive, Team PokerStars Pro Makarov is your winner

After 20 minutes of heads-up play, Skämmes managed to knock the Team PokerStars Pro's sizable chip lead down to just 778,617 to 590,383 when both players got all the money in middle on the video shown below:

With the board showing 8♣ J♦ K♥ 5♥ and 148,000 in the pot Skämmes would lead out for 120,000 as LuckyGump potted to 508,000. Skämmes would re-raise all-in for 8,383 more holding 6♠ K♦ J♥ A♥ for the flopped top two pair and the nut flush re-draw as LuckyGump produced 5♦ T♠ 4♦ K♣ for the turned lower two pair. The dirty river would spike a 5♠ in favor of the Team PokerStars pro giving Makarov fives full, the Event #17-H title, and the first place prize of $150,930.00

The unlucky Skämmes would have to settle with the six figure sum of $101,587.50 as tonight's unfortunate runner-up.
