SCOOP 2012: FlyingSumo flies his way to the top of Event #17-M ($215 NLHE 10-Max Shootout)

SCOOP logo.gifGetting to a SCOOP final table is not an easy task. Just ask FlyingSumo who just missed out on getting to his first one in Event 9. He managed to get to the final table in Event 17 though, from there he battled his way to add SCOOP champion to his accomplishments along with that SCOOP watch to his WCOOP bracelet that he won a couple years ago.

*************************************
The medium version of the 2012 Spring Championship of Online Poker Event 17 featured a No Limit Hold'em shootout format with 10 players sitting at every table to start. It had a cap of 1,000 players or 100 10-handed tables that was reached to double the guarantee. Here's a look at the tourney stats:

Entrants: 1,000
Prize Pool: $200,000
Guarantee: $100,000
Places Paid: 100

With three rounds of play the players faced needing to win a 10-handed sit-n-go in the first two rounds to move on to the final table and then a final 10-handed sit-n-go to win the event and be known as a SCOOP champion.

Round 2:

Making your way into the second round meant that you were guaranteed at least $770. Just making it to the second round was not the goal for these players though as they attempted to work their way through another nine opponents to reach the third and final round. Team PokerStars Pros Henrique "Henrique.P" Pinho and Chad "ChadBrownPRO" Brown both won their first round tables but became one of the early casulties in the second round getting eliminated in 97th and 92nd respectively.

Flying Sumo was the first to punch their ticket to the third round guaranteeing himself $2,800 with a shot at the $36,500 first place prize. He was followed by kev19, barrybab333, and ultralord007. The next four to advance to the final round were SALTWORT, Mieses88, Bandano, and Skalexjung.

The final two tables featured bnn boos battling BigRiskky, and HetaGunnar42 against 3P3NIPA.

Round 3:

The third and final round got underway with the stacks and blinds resetting. Each player once again started with 5,000 with the blinds at 25/50. Here is a look at the seat assignments for the final table:

Seat 1: SALTWORT (5000 in chips)
Seat 2: FlyingSumo (5000 in chips)
Seat 3: bnn boos (5000 in chips)
Seat 4: skalexjung (5000 in chips)
Seat 5: Mieses88 (5000 in chips)
Seat 6: 3P3NIPA (5000 in chips)
Seat 7: barrybab333 (5000 in chips)
Seat 8: kev19 (5000 in chips)
Seat 9: Bandano (5000 in chips)
Seat 10: ultralord007 (5000 in chips)

First two shots fired:

The first elimination came when Mieses88 got caught making a move against FlyingSumo with a flush draw. After opening to 200 from middle position Mieses88 got called by FlyingSumo and the pair saw the T♥7♣2♥ flop. FlyingSumo was first to act and checked to Mieses88 who bet 320. FlyingSumo raised to 880, Mieses88 three-bet to 1,680, FlyingSumo moved all-in which was enough to cover Mieses88 who called. The pair showed their cards with Mieses88 holding A♥9♥ for the flush draw and FlyingSumo holding Q♥Q♦. The 3♣ turn and 2♦ river meant nothing for either players hand eliminating Mieses88 in tenth place collecting $2,800.

A few hands later the next elimination came at the hands of skalexjung. Bandano opened from early position to 180 and was re-raised to 465 by skalexjung. Bandano moved all-in for 2,370 and was called by skalexjung who showed A♠A♣ while Bandano held T♠T♥. The 6♦4♥2♠ J♥ 5♠ board was a safe one for skalexjung eliminating Bandano in ninth place collecting $3,800.

Aces does it again and again:

Aces holding have been a trend on this final table and that trend continued with the next elimination. Opening from late position SALTWORT made it 200, 3P3NIPA bumped it up to 520. SALTWORT then raised to 1,130 which brought an all-in shove from 3P3NIPA. SALTWORT started the hand with less than 3P3NIPA and was facing the decision to call off the rest of his stack for his tourney life. He eventually called and showed A♥K♦ against the A♠A♦ of 3P3NIPA. The non-paint 7♦5♦3♠ 3♣ 8♥ board gave no assistance to SALTWORT eliminating him in eighth place collecting $5,000.

The aces train couldn't be stopped and this time it was bnn boos who benefited from getting them dealt to him. After opening from under-the-gun to 200, bnn boos got re-raised to 500 from barrybab333. Action folded back to bnn boos who made it 1,200, barrybab333 then moved all-in for 3,410 total and was called by bnn boos who showed the A♠A♦ while barybab333 held 8♠8♥. The Q♥J♦7♠ 6♣ J♠ board was a good one for bnn boos eliminating barrybab333 in seventh place collecting $6,300.

Half way there:

The next elimination took some time as the remaining six players were still pretty deep. Eventually skalexjung got so short that he moved all-in from the big blind after ultralord007 opened to 444. He was called by ultralord007 who showed A♥J♠ against the J♣9♥ held by skalexjung. By the time the K♦Q♠4♣ 5♦ T♣ board ran out both players held a straight but it was the ace-high straight held by ultralord007 that won the hand and eliminated skalexjung in sixth place collecting $8,000.

Next one to fall:

After falling to just a little more than 10 big blinds bnn boos moved all-in from under-the-gun. He was called by kev19 and the other two players folded. The players cards were revealed with kev19 holding 9♠9♦ and bnn boos holding 2♠2♦. The Q♦T♥4♠ 7♠ J♣ board was a safe one for kev19 eliminating bnn boos in fifth place collecting $9,900.

Down to three:

After doubling up the other short stack on the table kev19 found himself with just over 3 big blinds. Two hands later he moved all-in from under-the-gun and was called by the two big stacks from the blinds. FlyingSumo and 3P3NIPA both checked it down with FlyingSumo's J♣J♦ winning the hand on the 7♣6♥2♣ 5♥ 7♦ board to eliminate kev19 in fourth place collecting $14,100.

No deal then elimination:

After a failed attempt at striking a deal the three players resumed play with 3P3NIPA in the chip lead. That chip lead soon slid over to ultralord007 who then eliminated 3P3NIPA. Ultralord007 started the by raising to 800 under-the-gun and was called by 3P3NIPA. The pair saw the 8♣7♦4♥ flop which brought a check/call from 3P3NIPA after ultralord007 bet 800. The 6♣ turn brought a bet to 2,150 from 3P3NIPA which ultralord007 called. The T♦ brought a check from 3P3NIPA and then a bet to 6,800 which was enough to put 3P3NIPA all-in. The call was made by 3P3NIPA who showed K♥5♥ for the eight-high straight while ultralord007 held 9♦4♦ for the nine-high straight. For his third place finish 3P3NIPA collects $18,900.

Heads-up:

The two players played a few hands before they decided to pause play and discuss a deal. They quickly agreed to splitting the remaining prize pool giving each player $29,950 leaving $2,000 and the watch to play for.

Once the deal was reached the pair played 16 hands to end things. After a raise and call pre flop the pair saw the A♦K♦9♠ flop. It was checked to FlyingSumo who bet 850, ultralord007 called and they saw the A♠ turn. Once again it was checked to FlyingSumo who again bet, this time to 1,700, ultralord007 raised to 4,000, FlyingSumo moved all-in and ultralord007 called off the rest of his stack. Both players cards were revealed with ultralord007 holding A♥7♥ for trip aces while FlyingSumo held 9♣9♦ for a full house. The Q♦ river only meant the end giving FlyingSumo the extra $2,000, watch, and title of being a SCOOP champion.
