SCOOP 2013: holako splits, quarters and scoops a win in Event #16-L ($27 Limit Omaha H/L)
There's a reason why you don't see Fixed Limit Omaha Hi/Lo played on poker television broadcasts. It's a game which doesn't have the glitz and glamour of Holdem. It's a game of quarters, halves and scoops that requires a strong ability to hand read and a deep understanding of hand strength. It's not the sort of game you can fluke a win, so it was certainly an impressive performance by holako to defeat nearly three thousand players to turn a $27 investment into a five-figure score and the coveted SCOOP title.
SCOOP Event 16-L was the $27 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event which saw a rather impressive 2,953 players come together to produce a prize pool of $72,496.15 - a figure that was almost three times the advertised guarantee!
Among them were Team PokerStars Pros Fredy Torres, Chad Brown, Naoya Kihara, George Danzer, Andre Coimbra, Richard Toth, Adrienne Rowsome, Mickey Petersen, Lex Veldhuis and Matthias de Meulder but they sadly fell short of the money for the top 378 players. The min-cash was worth $43.49 but maxxscam from Canada would be the one to miss by the narrowest of margins, falling as the bubble in 379th place.
Marcin Horecki (340th - $46.39), Marcel Luske (240th - $61.62), George Lind (196th - $72.49) and Henrique Pinho (195th - $72.49) were the red spades to finish in the money.
A huge multi-way pot unfolded on the final table bubble that saw xD6x and Dimm57 both all in, with two other players in the hand. holako took the high with two pair as wconanw and xD6x chopped the low, to leave Dimm57 to be eliminated in 10th place as the final table line up was set:
Final Table Line up
Seat 1: xD6x (225,757 in chips)
Seat 2: urcatchingup (2,845,193 in chips)
Seat 3: IamGrand18 (2,344,910 in chips)
Seat 4: wconanw (1,072,665 in chips)
Seat 5: natedogg0381 (775,271 in chips)
Seat 6: Daut44 (463,693 in chips)
Seat 7: holako (4,256,239 in chips)
Seat 8: Luckkozak (2,158,579 in chips)
Seat 9: DTFobos (622,693 in chips)
The blinds started off at 30,000/60,000 with holako holding a solid chip lead with both xD6x and Daut44 under pressure as the short stacks.
xD6x would secure an early double up, but Daut44 couldn't do likewise. Daut44 was all in preflop with Luckkozak and IamGrand18 taking the action all the way to the river with some heavy betting on a 9♦K♥8♦3♥Q♠ board. IamGrand18 showed K♣9♣T♦J♥ for a king-high straight which was too good for both opponents who mucked. Daut44 picked up $616.21 for 9th place.
xD6x doubled up the very next hand to get right back into contention as wconanw took a hit, but it was Luckkozak who was next to go. Luckkozak three-bet preflop, raised the flop, bet the turn and then called all in on the river when holako fired a final bet on the K♦3♠J♣5♣Q♠ board. Luckkozak held A♦6♦5♠A♥ for a pair of aces but holako's Q♦3♣T♣9♦ for the rivered straight took it down with no low available. Luckkozak's 8th place was worth a nice return of $1,051.19.
urcatchingup collected a big double up in a hand that was capped preflop and again on the flop when both players held pocket aces:
natedogg0381 was on the short stack and survived a couple of all-ins by collecting half of the pot but ultimately couldn't recover. natedogg0381 was all in preflop against IamGrand18 and holako, with the two live players betting all the way to showdown on the 4♠3♥6♠K♠9♠ board. IamGrand18's A♣5♣A♠7♦ was a seven-high straight and six-low but holako opened 7♣A♥5♠J♥ for the same hands. natedogg0381 couldn't beat the high or the low to be eliminated in 7th place for $1,703.65.
urcatchingup was quartered in a big pot against both wconanw and holako, before urcatchingup was all in preflop with three opponents making the call. wconanw led the betting on the flop, the turn was checked before wconanw bet again on the river on the 9♣8♦2♦A♣9♦ board. Both holako and IamGrand18 made the call but wconanw took the high with 2♣A♦6♠9♠ for a full house, as holako's 6♦6♣3♣2♠ collected the low, leaving IamGrand18 and urcatchingup to muck. urcatchingup finished in 6th place for $2,428,62 in prize money.
holako was into the chip lead, but the short stacks continued to fight with DTFobos and IamGrand18 securing double ups. The two would then collide with DTFobos all in preflop, IamGrand18 committing on the flop, and xD6x calling both of them:
Both xD6x and DTFobos were drawing low but the double-paired board left IamGrand18 to scoop to eliminate DTFobos in 5th place for $3,153.58.
Another interesting hand saw three of the four players reach showdown all with the same low, with holako's lowly pair of sevens enough to take the high in a massive swing of fortune:
It was a position that was too much for IamGrand18 to overcome. IamGrand18 was all in preflop moments later with 4♣7♦Q♦T♥ as wconanw called with 7♣A♠Q♣4♠. IamGrand18 was able to make an ace-high flush on the 8♦A♦A♣4♦7♥ but it wasn't enough as wconanw filled up with a full house. IamGrand18 picked up $4,240.29 for 4th place.
xD6x landed a double up with a full house against holako's two pair, but holako got those chips back with interest, getting three streets of value with an ace-high flush. It left xD6x in trouble, and all in shortly after on the turn on a board of 8♦4♦2♠T♠. xD6x held 9♠2♣J♠A♠ for straight, flush and low draws against holako's 6♥2♦2♥Q♠ set of deuces. The river card was the J♥ which didn't hit any of xD6x's draws, leaving xD6x to depart in 3rd place for $6,089.67.
Heads-up chip counts
Seat 4: wconanw (6,708,336 in chips)
Seat 7: holako (8,056,664 in chips)
The two remaining players were pretty even in chips, and such is the case with Omaha Hi/Lo, heads-up play became an epic battle.
holako gained the early advantage but wconanw fought back to get on top after a full house over full house on a board of 4♥5♥Q♠4♠8♦. wconanw had rivered it with A♥8♥8♠A♦ as holako did well not to lose more with 5♦A♠7♠5♣.
holako responded with a full double up holding K♦6♥K♥8♠ for the nut flush on a 3♦9♥2♥A♥J♠ board. The action got crazy on the river as wconanw's Q♥8♣3♠3♥ second-nut flush was pipped.
holako was able to carry that momentum and had wconanw all in on the turn on a board of A♠Q♦6♠7♥. holako called with Q♥4♣3♥9♥ but trailed wconanw's J♠2♦8♠Q♣ until the 5♥ appeared on the river to give holako a seven-high straight and six-low to scoop the pot and claim the win! wconanw received $8,554.54 for 2nd place as holako takes the SCOOP crown along with $11,456.32 in prize money. Congratulations!
