SCOOP 2014: Calvin "cal42688" Anderson captures Event #38-H, record-tying 5th SCOOP title ($2,100 H.O.R.S.E.)

We'd seen Calvin "cal42688" Anderson coming close time and time again over the last two weeks. He'd cashed in over a dozen events, making an incredible six final tables along the way:

* Event #4-M ($55+R NLHE, 6-Max., Action Hour) -- 5th
* Event #16-M ($109+R NLHE, Big Antes) -- 2nd
* Event #19-L ($27 NLHE, 6-Max., Shootout) -- 5th
* Event #31-M ($215 Razz) -- 5th
* Event #31-H ($2,100 Razz) -- 8th
* Event #35-H ($2,100 PLO Hi/Lo) -- 8th

He was going deep in hold'em, Omaha, razz, and Badugi events this spring, coming oh-so-near claiming a fifth all-time SCOOP watch to tie Shaun Deeb's record. Almost fitting, then, that Anderson would at last get there in a mixed game event, the $2,100 H.O.R.S.E. (Event #38-H). It was a hard-fought win, but after 12 hours-plus and a heads-up even chop with the gritty Mikhail "Mikleler" Semin, Anderson won, earning $47,065.00 and a place in the SCOOP record book while adding to his lead in the 2014 SCOOP Player of the Series race.

The tournament drew 111 entrants, building a $222,000 prize pool that more than doubled the $100K guarantee and would be divided by only the top 16 finishers.

It was a small but tough field, peppered throughout with familiar usernames including many other 'COOP heroes past and present in addition to Anderson. There were seven Team PokerStars Pros involved, too, although none fared better than Nacho Barbero who went out in 45th. One Team Online member took a seat in this one as well, Naoya "nkeyno" Kihara, but he also came up shy of the money with a 34th-place finish.

It would ultimately take more than eight hours for the field to be cut down to just 17 players. Hand-for-hand play then commenced as they were one elimination away from the cash bubble bursting.

About 10 minutes later it was Brian "aba20" Townsend losing the last of his stack in a hold'em hand against Bernardo "bedias" Dias in which Townsend had K♥9♥ and got his final chips in on a 6♦4♠9♣ flop only to see bedias show Q♣Q♦. The turn was the 7♥ and river the Q♥ and they were down to 16.

The money having been reached, Crisper headed the counts with more than 105,000 with Calvin "cal42688" Anderson the nearest challenger well back with about 58,000.

It would take two hours more for eight more to fall, during which period Crisper slipped back to the pack while Bill "PICKLED EGG" Gazes emerged to claim the chip lead.

spaise411 (16th), toril274 (15th), GlassOfBeer (14th), and one-time SCOOP champ highland (13th) next went out with each cashing for $4,440. Bernardo "bedias" Dias -- a Sunday Million winner just a few weeks ago -- was then eliminated in 12th, followed by six-time 'COOP winner Dan "djk123" Kelly (11th), Colisea (10th), and one-time WCOOP champ NoraFlum (9th), with each earning $5,550.

The final table was underway.

Seat 1: Mikhail "Mikleler" Semin (Russia) -- 54,967
Seat 2: Matt "plattsburgh" Vengrin (Mexico) -- 50,382
Seat 3: Pthelegend (Canada) -- 44,292
Seat 4: Calvin "cal42688" Anderson (Mexico) -- 99,764
Seat 5: Bill "PICKLED EGG" Gazes (Brazil) -- 139,448
Seat 6: blony_tair (Germany) -- 93,644
Seat 7: Christer "lennart" Johansson (Sweden) -- 22,087
Seat 8: Crisper (Argentina) -- 50,416

lennart leaves in eighth

The game was Omaha hi/lo to start the final table, and a few hands later had switched to razz with the stakes remaining at 3,000/6,000. Then a hand arose that saw Pthelegend raising, Christer "lennart" Johansson reraising, and both Mikhail "Mikleler" Semin and Pthelegend calling. Then on fourth street Semin led, Pthelegend called, and Johansson called all in with his last 2,137. Another bet from Semin on fifth then earned a fold from Pthelegend.

Mikleler: ([2][7]) / [A][3][5]
Pthelegend: ( X X ) / [5][Q][T] -- FOLDED
lennart: ([A][5]) / [3][Q][Q]

Johansson had started well before picking up two bricks on fourth and fifth, while Semin had already made a 7-5-3-2-A. lennart would pick up a [4] and [J] to end with a J-low, and Mikleler would add a [4] on sixth street to improve to a wheel, and Johansson was sent railward in eighth.

It was another good finish for Johansson in this year's SCOOP. He's cashed more than a dozen times and has now made five final tables, previously finishing sixth in Event #5-M ($215 Badugi), third in Event #12-H ($2,100 Stud), sixth in Event #24-H ($1,050+R PLO 6-Max., Turbo), and sixth in Event #28-H ($2,100 FL Triple Draw 2-7).

Pthelegend pushed out in seventh

They were still playing razz when Mikhail "Mikleler" Semin was back in action opening with an [8] up, then Pthelegend reraised showing an [A] and Semin called. Mikleler picked up a [2] on fourth street while Pthelegend drew a [9], and after Semin led, Pthelegend raised all in for 5,892 and Semin called.

Mikleler: ([5][6]) / [8][2]
Pthelegend: ([5][4]) / [A][9]

Mikleler would end up drawing [Q][J] / ([8]) to end with a J-8-6-5-2. That turned out to be enough as Pthelegend was dealt [J][4] / [5] to finish J-9-5-4-A and go out in seventh, the best so far of Pthelegend's eight cashes in this year's SCOOP.

blony_tair bounced in sixth

The tournament pushed past the 11-hour mark with Bill "PICKLED EGG" Gazes slipping back in the counts while Calvin "cal42688" Anderson moved in front to lead with six left.

Then in the hold'em round (stakes 5,000/10,000) a hand came up that saw blony_tair raise from the button, Crisper three-bet from the small blind, Mikhail "Mikleler" Semin cap it from the big blind, and both blony_tair and Crisper call.

The flop came 6♣A♠A♦ and after Crisper checked, Mikleler bet, blony_tair called all in for 4,848, and Crisper called. Both Crisper and Mikleler checked the Q♣ turn, then Crisper check-called a river bet from Mikleler after fifth street brought the A♣.

Semin showed 9♦9♥ and Crisper T♠T♣, meaning Crisper had the better full house between the two. It was better than blony_tair's hand, too, as the latter mucked to go out in sixth place -- a 15th cash for blony_tair in this year's SCOOP and a second final table after finishing seventh in Event #6-M ($82+R NLHE, Turbo).

Crisper cut down in fifth

Crisper then fell to short-stacked status and had but 26,032 to start an Omaha hi/lo hand in which leader Calvin "cal42688" Anderson raised from the cutoff, Crisper three-bet from the small blind, and Anderson called. The flop came 2♣A♥8♣. Crisper led with a bet, cal42688 raised, Crisper reraised all in, and Anderson called.

Crisper had A♠Q♥Q♠J♥ for aces and no low possibilities while Anderson showed 9♥9♦6♣5♣ for a made low and a pair of nines. The turn was the 6♥ and river the 5♦, giving cal42688 two pair for a better high to scoop, and Crisper was done in fifth.

PICKLED EGG picked off in fourth

Bill "PICKLED EGG" Gazes had hung on for much of the final table with a short stack, but his run would finally come to an end shortly thereafter.

They were still playing Omaha hi/lo, and after Gazes raised from UTG, Matt "plattsburgh" Vengrin three-bet from the small blind, Gazes capped it, and Vengrin called. The flop came 9♦Q♠9♥, Vengrin bet, and PICKLED EGG called with the 3,892 he had left.

plattburgh: A♥A♦7♥6♠
PICKLED EGG: A♠J♦7♦2♥

The turn was the T♠ and river the 3♦, giving plattsburgh two pair for the high with no low hands possible, and just three remained. That made two final tables for Bill "PICKLED EGG" Gazes at this year's SCOOP after having finished sixth in Event #21-M ($215 NLHE, Turbo, Zoom).

plattsburgh thwarted in third

Calvin "cal42688" Anderson had built up a substantial lead with three left, then added more in a razz hand that saw Matt "plattsburgh" Vengrin stick with the hand until seventh street then have to fold, saving less than 6,000 (not quite one small bet).

Not long after that Vengrin was all in after bringing in with a [9] up, Anderson raised with a [7], and Mikhail "Mikleler" Semin called. Semin would call a bet on fourth from Anderson, then fold to another on fifth, and the run out ultimately gave cal42688 a 7-low and the hand:

cal42688: ([4][4]) / [7][2][5][3] / ([5]) -- 7-5-4-3-2
plattsburgh: ([3][9]) / [9][K][2][Q] / ([Q]) -- K-Q-9-3-2
Mikleler: ( X X ) / [4][3][3] -- FOLDED

Vengrin's run had ended in third, equaling his finish in Event #5-M ($215 Badugi).

Mikleler battles gamely, but cal42688 captures fifth SCOOP title

Heads-up play began with Calvin "cal42688" Anderson enjoying a better than 8-to-1 chip lead with 495,622 versus Mikhail "Mikleler" Semin's 59,378.

Anderson would whittle Semin down to less than 24,000, then the latter doubled through in a razz hand. Mikleler began chipping up further during the rest of the razz round and into stud, and by the time the 12-hour break arrived had edged into the chip lead with 317,356 to Anderson's 237,644.

That's when the pair decided to talk about a possible deal to divide up most of the remaining prize money. Anderson offered an even chop, but Semin wanted to see "ICM"-based numbers and to discuss. Anderson said no, he'd rather just play, and their heads-up battle continued.

However, after a few more minutes of play with the stacks staying roughly the same, Semin said he'd do the even chop and so the tourney was paused again. Each player would get $45,065 with $2,000 left to play for, and with Anderson mentioning his first-place spot on the Player of the Series leaderboard and Semin also noting his desire for a SCOOP watch, play continued again.

They continued on into the stud hi/lo round, and soon after Anderson picked up a few pots to even the match and then edge out in front. Then after a hand in which Anderson won a decent-sized pot in a flush-over-flush hand, Mikleler had been knocked down under 100,000 again before climbing back to take the lead once more as they moved to limit hold'em.

Mikleler would make quad jacks in LHE to add to his lead, then cal42688 drew a full house to push back ahead. They'd continue to tussle, then finally Anderson would open up a lead against Semin to push him back under 70,000. Then came a hold'em hand in which Anderson drew two pair to win a series of bets. Take a look:

Mikleler would manage to double up a couple of times after that one, but the end arrived soon thereafter, finally concluding what had become a heads-up duel lasting an hour and 15 minutes.

The limits were 8,000/16,000, and after cal42688 opened with a raise, Mikleler reraised all in for 23,648 total and Anderson called.

It was J♦7♣ for Anderson and K♣6♠ for Semin. The flop came a dazzling A♦A♣A♥, then after the 9♠ turn it looked like Semin might double a third time. But the J♥ fell on the river and it was all over... Anderson had won! A record-tying fifth SCOOP watch!
