SCOOP 2014: Oh my, O.Klunssila wins Event 10-M ($82 PL 5-Card Omaha)

When the final table began in Event 10-M, Riverlan_88 looked unbeatable. O.Klunssila was the shortest stack of the six but immediately doubled up, eliminated a player, and continued to get stronger. O.Klunssila really showed skill during three-handed play and soon became the unbeatable player at the table. Now, O.Klunssila is a SCOOP champion.

Omaha is so popular... How popular is it? It's so popular that Omaha needs variations like Pot Limit 5-Card Omaha to squeeze every bit of excitement out of the game. And that's no joke.

Event 10 of the Spring Championship of Online Poker offered the PL 5-Card Omaha with six-max tables and the additional excitement of one rebuy and one add-on allowed per player. Put a $50K guarantee on that, and the tournament simply explodes. By the time registration was over, the prize pool was more than triple the guarantee, and action was fast and furious.

Players: 1,007
Rebuys: 681
Add-ons: 557
Guarantee: $50,000.00
Total prize pool: $168,375.00
Paid players: 132

This event was scheduled to run for two days, but late on Day 1, the field thinned down to two tables by Level 29. Play was supposed to stop when they reached Level 32, but it was going to be close.

Backing up for a moment, when the tournament reached the money, only one member of Team PokerStars was still in action. Team Online's Naoya "nkeyno" Kihara of Japan was not in good chip shape, however, and he exited in 96th place for a $378.84 payout.

A bit later, at the end of Level 31, play paused with eight competitors listed as follows:

2. PearlJammer (Mexico) 1,506,262
3. mangaaa87 (Poland) 1,359,323
4. proBUTOV (Russia) 1,169,508
5. O.Klunssila (Finland) 823,758

7. gorillas83 (Greece) 791,465
8. Zapahzamazki (Russia) 748,268

Day 2

After a break of more than 12 hours, the tournament resumed in Level 32 with blinds at 15K/30K.

It took less than 15 minutes for Zapahzamazki to push that short stack all-in with A♦Q♠9♥K♦K♣, but O.Klunssila was there with 4♥A♥J♥A♠8♠. The board of 6♠6♣7♥6♥4♠ gave O.Klunssila the better full house, and Zapahzamazki exited in eighth place with $3,030.75.

Another 20 minutes or so went by before mangaaa87 made a move, and it came after a post-flop raising war with Riverlan_88. They both limped to see the J♠A♥7♦, after which mangaaa87 was all-in with 6♣K♣2♥A♠A♣ for trip aces. Riverlan_88 showed A♦J♦8♦2♣3♦ for two pair, but the T♠ and 8♦ that finished the board made a straight. Mangaaa87 left in seventh place with $3,030.75.

Riverlan_88 flows with monster chip lead

O.Klunssila then got involved with ekaterina989 to see a raised flop of Q♦K♠7♣. O.Klunssila bet, and ekaterina989 check-raised all-in with 9♠5♥J♠7♥Q♠. But that two pair was outdone by the K♥5♣T♠T♥Q♣. The A♣ and 8♠ finished the hand, eliminating ekaterina989 in sixth place with $5,051.25.

PearlJammer then doubled through proBUTOV. And a short time later, he got involved from the small blind with gorillas83 in the big blind. The preflop raising war resulted in gorillas83 all-in with T♥5♦Q♦6♦Q♠, and PearlJammer showed K♠J♣A♦3♦2♣. The board revealed 2♠K♥7♥A♥3♣, and gorillas83 was gone in fifth place with $7,576.87.

O.Klunssila doubled through proBUTOV, and the two faced off three hands later. O.Klunssila raised UTG, proBUTOV reraised from the small blind, and O.Klunssila called. The flop of 5♥2♥6♦ prompted an all-in bet from proBUTOV with K♥K♦2♦A♣6♣. O.Klunssila called with Q♣7♥T♠J♥8♣ for the straight draw, which came on the 4♣ turn. The J♣ on the river officially eliminated proBUTOV in fourth place with $10,944.37.

PearlJammer was the shortest of the three remaining players but scored a double through O.Klunssila. Just a few hands later, PearlJammer did the same through Riverlan_88 to even the stacks:

However, Riverlan_88 pushed back at PearlJammer and won a pot worth more than 2.1 million chips. Riverlan_88 then took 2.5 million chips from O.Klunssila.

PearlJammer was back on the shortest stack and pushed less than 1.8 million chips all-in with 9♦3♥A♠Q♦A♣. O.Klunssila called with 7♦A♦T♠8♦5♠ and hit two pair on the J♠8♥5♦4♠3♣ board. Jon "PearlJammer" Turner was out in third place with $15,995.62.

Riverlan_88 seeking DoubleCOOP

The two remaining players took to heads-up play with these chip counts:

Seat 1: O.Klunssila (4,615,866 in chips)
Seat 6: Riverlan_88 (6,609,134 in chips)

On the sixth hand, O.Klunssila took a pot worth nearly 2.8 million chips to capture the lead. Riverlan_88 fell behind and eventually down to little more than 2 million chips, though a double-up helped. Even so, O.Klunssila was strong and aggressive, once again chipping away at Riverlan_88.

It didn't take long for Riverlan_88 to make another move. The two got involved to see a re-reraised flop of 2♥3♣8♠. O.Klunssila bet, and Riverlan_88 called all-in with A♣A♠6♠2♠7♥ for the overpair. But O.Klunssila showed 6♥7♣9♦Q♦T♣ for the straight draw. However, the 2♣ turn and 6♣ river made a flush draw. Former TCOOP winner Riverlan_88 was denied another COOP title and accepted second place and $21,046.87.

O.Klunssila took the title, SCOOP watch, and $28,203.35 in cash. Congrats!
