SCOOP 2014: Oxota banks $318k in Event #23-H win ($2,100 NLHE)

Momentum is everything in poker. It breeds confidence, and confidence wins tournaments. Tonight, two of our final nine were less than 48 hours removed from huge MTT scores. Fresh_oO_D finished second in yesterday's Sunday 500 for over $62k and on Saturday, Oxota took down the $215 Weekly Turbo NLHE for $30k. Is it a coincidence they ended up as Event #23-H's final two? It took 75 minutes of heads-up battle for Oxota to put away Fresh_oO_D, winning his second tournament of the week, a potentially life-changing $317,911.46, and his first SCOOP title.

Event #23-H drew 1,110 players, their $2,100 buy-ins combining to create a $2.2 million prize pool. 126 places were paid with first place set to earn $399,600.00. Two dozen Red Spades were in the mix including Jonathan Duhamel, Joe Cada, George Danzer, Liv Boeree, Ike Haxton Jake Cody, and Andre Akkari. Leo Fernandez (96th) and Chris Moneymaker (56th) made the money, but ended their run on Day 1 while Matthias De Meulder and Marc-Andre "FrenchDawg" Ladouceur advanced to Day 2.

The money bubble burst in Level 18 and unfortunately David "WhooooKidd" Baker was on the receiving end of it. With the blinds at 800/1,600, Str8$$$Homey opened for 4,000, Baker three-bet to 9,650 and Fresh_oO_D cold four-bet to 19,500 from the small blind. Str8$$$Homey folded, Baker shoved and Fresh_oO_D called, his pocket nines racing with Baker's A♣K♥. Baker got no help from the board and went home empty-handed in 127th place.

Aside from Team Pros Moneymaker and Fernandez, notable cashes on Day 1 included RaiseOnce (113th), Clark "snake8484" Hamagami (86th), Joel "Odonkor1" Nordkvist (81st), Sam "KingKobeMVP" Stein (77th), Katie "KatePkrPro" Lindsay (75th), Dylan "ImaLucSac" LInde (65th), and Chris "Run dat Game" Lovett (64th).

54 players remained when Day 1 concluded including Team Online's Marc-Andre "FrenchDawg" Ladouceur (298,565) and Team Pro Matthias De Meulder (59,435). Here's a look at the top ten in chips overnight:

NikloasDLP 627,158

Fresh_oO_D 384,927

Mike "SirWatts" Watson 351,994
asiancutiee 342,010
Str8$$$Homey 335,272

Cards went back in the air following a twelve-hour break. Unfortunatley, Matthias De Meulder was one of Day 2's first casualties, going out in 51st place when his pocket kings were cracked by A♥J♥. Following him to the rail over the next few hours were Toby "810ofclubs" Lewis (48th), Fabian "fabsinho" Quoss (47th), Randal "RandALLin" Flowers (41st), David "DonkCommitted" Miscikowski (40th), Mike "goleafsgoeh" Leah (36th), Shawn "buck21" Buchanan (30th), Diego "vgreen22" Brunelli (28th), Nico "PKaiser" Fierro (27th), Jonathan "Iftarii" Jaffe (25th), Mike "SirWatts" Watson (21st), and Sorel "zangbezan24" Mizzi (14th).

With 13 players remaining, Marc-Andre Ladouceur was down to 21 big blinds. The blinds up to 7,000/14,000, donut604 min-raised from the small blind and Ladouceur called from the big. The flop fell 9♦7♥5♥ and donut604 led out for 31,267. Ladouceur raised to 70,000, donut604 shoved for 211,46 and Ladouceur called, turning over 8♠9♥ for top pair. It was no match for donut604's Q♥Q♠ and Ladouceur sank to only 50,000 in chips. A few hands later, Ladouceur got the rest of his chips in vs. Jon "PearlJammer" Turner. Ladouceur had the preflop advantage with A♠7♣ against K♣J♥, and held it through the turn, but PearlJammer rivered a king-high straight on the 5♥9♠T♠6♣Q♠ board, ending Ladouceur's run in 13th place.

FrenchDawg collects 17,760 bones for 13th place

Blinds were up to 10,000/20,000 when 10Pistike93 three-bet shoved for 440,260 preflop and NikolasDLP called. Although 10Pistike93's K♠T♠ hit trips on the K♥J♣K♦ flop, NikolasDLP spiked the Q♥ on the river to make a Broadway straight with A♦T♥. 19Pistike93 was eliminated in tenth place, sending us to the final table.

No soft spots here

Befitting the high buy-in and a field littered with MTT geniuses, the final table was quite a decorated one. NikolasDLP is a WCOOP champion, winning the $215 NLHE Heads-Up event in 2013 for over $62k. Having won a $1,050+R NLHE Turbo event in 2011, xSuPrA was looking for a second SCOOP title. Jon "PearlJammer" Turner was seeking his first SCOOP win, despite 62 career cashes and a spot in the Top 20 on the all-time SCOOP earnings list. Trueteller is a high-stakes NLHE cash game regular, known to play as high as $500/$1,000. Two of our final tablists already had big weekends-- on Saturday Oxota took down the $215 Weekly Turbo NLHE for $30k and Fresh_oO_D finished second in yesterday's Sunday 500 for over $62k.

In perhaps the sickest feat of all, Sonderskönig and Str8$$$Homey made the final table of this event in back to back years. In 2013 Sonderskönig finished seventh for $63,718 and Str8$$$Homey is the defending champion, having won $377,280 for first place. This stat wasn't lost on either of them.

Sonderskönig picks off RJules12

Sonderskönig scored the final table's first knockout. The blinds were up to 12,500/25,000 when RJules12 open-shoved for 200,729 from the cutoff. Sonderskönig called from the big blind, his A♠K♥ dominating RJules12's A♣7♠. Although RJules12 flopped a seven, a king came with it and he exited in ninth place ($26,640.00).

Defending champ Str8$$$Homey takes eighth

A short time later, NikolasDLP opened for a min-raise to 60,000 and Str8$$$Homey shoved for 689,332 with A♣Q♦ in the small blind. NikolasDLP called and revealed J♠J♣. The pair held up on the 9♦5♠5♣6♠2♦ board and our defending champion went out in eighth place, collecting $44,400.00 for his run.

Déjà vu for Sonderskönig

Later in the same level, NikolasDLP made another opening min-raise to 60,000 and Sonderskönig moved in for 479,025 on the button with A♠7♠. Nikolas DLP snap-called and turned up A♥A♣. Sonderskönig couldn't pull off a miracle on the board and for the second year in a row, he finished this event in seventh place ($66,600.00).

xSuPrA out in sixth

Two hands later the action folded to Oxota in the small blind. He shoved for 1.42 million with 7♦8♥and xSuPrA called from the big blind with A♦2♣. Oxota made middle pair on the Q♥7♠4♥ flop and although xSuPrA picked up a wheel draw on the 3♦ turn, the river was the 6♠, sending him to the rail in sixth place ($88,800.00).

PearlJammer flips out in fifth

With the blinds up to 17,500/35,000, PearlJammer opened for 78,456 with A♦9♦ and NikolasDLP three-bet to 175,000 on the button. PearlJammer shoved for 1.02 million and NikolasDLP called, turning up pocket eights. PearlJammer did not improve on the K♥J♠5♣4♦T♦ board and he went out in fifth place, good for $111,888.00.

Trueteller doubles, doubles, and busts

As play turned four-handed, Trueteller was the shortest stack remaining with 733,000, about 18 big blinds. Dealt A♣7♣, Trueteller min-raised to 80,000 from the cutoff and Fresh_oO_D three-bet to 174,000 on the button. Trueteller called and they saw a T♣8♠6♥ flop. Trueteller checked and Fresh_oO_D checked behind. The turn came the 9♥ and Trueteller moved all-in for 554,000. Fresh_oO_D called and turned over 8♦T♠ for two pair, but they were no match for Trueteller's ten-high straight. The river was the A♥ and Trueteller doubled to 1.53 million.

On the very next deal, Trueteller and NikolasDLP saw an A♥9♠6♥ flop for 80,000 apiece. NikolsDLP check-called 66,000, then led for 120,000 when the 8♥ turned. Trueteller called and the river fell the K♠. NikolasDLP made it 360,000 to go, Trueteller shoved and NikolasDLP called with A♠T♥. Trueteller rolled over 5♥[9h for a flush and doubled to 3 million.

However, Trueteller's rush came to a screeching halt a few minutes later. Holding pocket nines, Trueteller four-bet shoved pre flop and Fresh_oO_D called with A♠J♠. Although Trueteller's nines held up on the K♣T♠6♣ flop, the J♣ turned making Fresh_oO_D a pair of jacks. The board paired kings on the river and Trueteller was out in fourth place, earning $160,950.00.

Three-way chop

With the field down to three Fresh_oO_D held the chip lead with 6.34 million, NikolasDLP was second with 3 million and Oxota was the short stack with 1.76 million. However, it didn't stay that way for long. Holding K♦9♥ Oxota bet every street and shoved the river on a K♥7♦5♥6♥J♦ board. Fresh_oO_D called with K♣4♦ and lost the kicker war while Oxota doubled to 2.38 million.

A short time later with the chip counts nearly even, the final three decided to pause the action and discuss a potential deal. Here's how they stacked up at the time:

Fresh_oO_D 3,778,806
Oxota 3,703,508
NikolasDLP 3,617,686

Final table host Naoya "nkeyno" Kihara presented them with ICM numbers, the shares ranging from $291,524 to $294,103. Although Fresh_oO_D tried to convince his opponents to give him an even $300,00, they laughed off the notion.

NikolasDLP: no
Oxota: lol buddy
NikolasDLP: you don't have edge
Oxota: first you wait for button
Oxota: now you do this lol
NikolasDLP: fresh uf you cancel now
Oxota: if that's how it's gonna be let's play
NikolasDLP: we don't deal in hu

Oxota eventually relented and all three agreed to the ICM chop. With $25,000 still up for grabs, cards went back in the air.

Fresh_oO_D rolls over NikolasDLP

Blinds were 30,000.60,000 when NikolasDLP raised to 120,000 on the button and Fresh_oO_D three-bet to 333,333. NikolasDLP came back over the top for 600,000 and Fresh_oO_D called. Both players checked the K♥7♦2♦ flop, but when the 3♥ turned, Fresh_oO_D bet 714,000. NikolasDLP called and they went to the river, which fell the 4♣. Fresh_oO_D shoved and NikolasDLP called all-in, revealing K♠[Kd for top set. However, Fresh_oO_D had hit running cards to make a wheel with A♦5♦. NikolasDLP was suddenly on the rail in third place, earning $291,524.88 thanks to the deal.

Heads-up chip counts

Seat 7: Fresh_oO_D (8,026,492 in chips)
Seat 8: Oxota (3,073,508 in chips)

Oxota went into heads-up play at a 2.6 to 1 chip disadvantage, but doubled up on the fifth hand of the match when his A♦J♥ turned a pair of jacks and rivered trips vs. A♠4♠. Oxota took a slim chip lead with 5.6 million to Fresh_oO_D's 5.5 million.

The chip counts stayed relatively even until Fresh_oO_D four-bet to 970,000 pre flop and Oxota called. Both players checked the K♠7♥2♣ flop. When the Q♦ turned Oxota checked again, Fresh_oO_D bet 950,000 and Oxota called. The river was the 4♥ and Oxota checked a third time. Fresh_oO_D made a tiny 185,000 bet and Oxota called, revealing K♥J♥. His pair of kings bested Fresh_oO_D's A♥Q♣ and Oxota moved up to 7.83 million in chips. Fresh_oO_D was left with 3.27 million.

Later in the same level Oxota check-raised all-in on a 9♦9♣4♣ flop with J♣T♣ and Fresh_oO_D called with A♥J♥. Had Oxota hit a club on the turn or river, this match would have been over, but the K♥ and the 5♥ fell instead, doubling Fresh_oO_D to 6.07 million.

Fresh_oO_D started pulling away from Oxota, taking his stack up to 7.5 million when Oxota folded the river on a T♥9♣Q♣3♣6♣ board. Fresh_oO_D went on to win seven pots in a row to take his stack up to 9.44 million. Down to only 1.33 million, Oxota three-bet shoved pre flop with A♣5♦ and Fresh_oO_D called with K♦Q♦. Oxota's ace-high held up and he doubled to 2.67 million. Then, on the very next hand, Fresh_oO_D shoved the river on a J♠K♥8♦6♦T♦ board and Oxota called off the rest of his chips. Oxota's J♦7♦ rivered a flush against Fresh_oO_D's Broadway straight with A♥Q♦.

Once again, the chip counts were almost even, Oxota holding 5.34 million to Fresh_oO_D's 5.76 million. With the blinds up to 50,000/100,000, Oxota check-called Fresh_oO_D's 212,500 bet on a Q♦7♣6♣ flop. Oxota check-called another 625,000 on the 3♠ turn and checked a third time when the 7♦ rivered. Fresh_oO_D checked behind and Oxota revealed 4♦6♠ for two pair. Fresh_oO_D mucked and Oxota moved up to 7 million in chips.

A few minutes later, Oxota opened for 225,000 with 2♣4♣ and hit trips on the 8♦2♠2♦ flop. Fresh_oO_D check-called 250,000 on the flop and another 650,000 when the 5♦ came on the turn. The river was the K♠ and Fresh_oO_D checked a third time. Oxota bet 1,875,000 and Fresh_oO_D called to see the bad news. Fresh_oO_D was left with 1.8 million.

On the next deal Oxota closed out the win, his Q♣J♣ hitting a lucky jack on the turn to beat Fresh_oO_D's A♦Q♠.

Congratulations to Oxota on an incredible score and his first SCOOP title! He banked $317,911.46 for the win, while runner-up Fresh_oO_D earned $294.103.66.
