SCOOP 2014: Luuk "pokerkluka" Gieles draws victory in Event #7-M ($215 NL Draw)

Remember when you were a kid and you'd be dragged unwillingly along to family gatherings? It would be some random cousin's birthday and you were supposed to pretend that you cared. For the most part, you'd be bored out of your brain watching the adults drink themselves silly, that is, until a friendly game of cards broke out.

The money box would be raided for small denomination coins to bet with, and the rubber band would come off the old paper playing cards that had corners bent and withered. It was game on. And that game was always Draw Poker.

Who would have thought, many years later, that we would be playing Draw Poker online? That players would pay hundreds of dollars to enter a Draw Poker tournament and that tens of thousands of dollars in prize money would be awarded in the most prestigious online poker championships in the world?

Yet here we are, at Event #7-M of the 2014 Spring Championship of Online Poker, where 310 entrants (including 26 re-entries) came together for the $215 No Limit Draw Poker Event. The prize pool was guaranteed at $50,000 but that was topped as a $62,000 prize pool was formed.

Pierre Neuville, George Danzer and Bertrand Grospellier were the members of Team PokerStars to enter but fail to reach the money for the top 42 players. Also falling short of the cash was brefff of the Ukraine who unfortunately bubbled in 43rd place.

With $341.00 locked up, the players started to drop away a little more rapidly. Marcin "Goral" Horecki (40th - $341.00) and Naoya "nkeyno" Kihara (16th - $651.00) both made impressive runs for Team PokerStars but fell short of reaching the final table.

When Argentinean MIBondiola was bounced out in 7th place, our final table of six was formed:

Final Table Line Up
Seat 1: Kevin "ImaLuckSac" MacPhee (264,857 in chips)
Seat 2: wingyru (372,269 in chips)
Seat 3: gygenot09 (70,866 in chips)
Seat 4: HTB19651965 (195,332 in chips)
Seat 5: PlayinWasted (197,742 in chips)
Seat 6: Luuk "pokerkluka" Gieles (448,934 in chips)

It was an interesting final table lineup, featuring TCOOP High Roller winner Luuk "pokerkluka" Gieles, former EPT Berlin champion Kevin "ImaLuckSac" MacPhee and 2013 WCOOP Main Event champion, the slightly mysterious PlayinWasted.

ImaLuckSac chipped away to move into the lead, but was clipped when he stood pat with a straight that served only to double up PlayinWasted who drew two to make an unlikely full house.

pokerkluka and gygenot09 were at times under pressure as the short stacks, but they secured double ups to stay alive as it would take quite some time to break the six-handed deadlock.

Eventually it would be HTB19651965 who would be first to crack. HTB19651965 moved all in predraw but was quickly called by pokerkluka in the small blind, who was happy to stand pat. HTB19651965 drew three but couldn't improve on a pair of aces, ending with A♥4♦3♥A♦Q♥. pokerkluka tabled 5♠6♣7♦4♣3♦ for a straight to take it down and eliminate HTB19651965 in sixth place for $2,480.00 in prize money.

It would be Kevin "ImaLuckSac" MacPhee who would be next to go. He opened with a min-raise from under the gun, which was met with an all-in shove by PlayinWasted. ImaLuckSac called off his last chips and both players drew one, apparently with both players holding two pair. ImaLuckSac showed 4♠8♦4♦8♣Q♦ for eights and fours, but that was bettered by PlayinWasted's Q♣Q♥T♣T♠3♠ for queens and tens. With that, MacPhee was gone in fifth place for $3,720.00 in prize money.

Despite claiming that scalp, it would be PlayinWasted who would be next to fall. PlayinWasted's tournament started to unravel when his bet with just king-high was picked off by wingyru who only held a pair of fours, and then pokerkluka then finished it off. PlayinWasted was all in predraw with pokerkluka making the call and both players drawing three. PlayinWasted could only muster 9♣Q♠A♣4♣T♠ for ace-high as pokerkluka's 3♣2♣9♥3♠6♣ pair of threes was enough to collect the pot. PlayinWasted was to fall short of the SCOOP title, departing in fourth place for $4,960.00.

wingyru won a nice pot with a pair of jacks against pokerkluka's pair of threes to climb into the chip lead, while gygenot09 continued to battle as the short stack against the rising blinds. gygenot09 did try to pull an interesting bluff after standing pat, but it was quickly picked off my pokerkluka:

That left gygenot09 in some trouble, but again gygenot09 was able to fight back with a series of double ups to get back into contention. However a key hand saw gygenot09 make two pair against pokerkluka's straight, before gygenot09's last hand was dealt.

gygenot09 was all in predraw with both opponents making the call. gygenot09 took three, while pokerkluka and wingyru drew just one apiece. wingyru would table two pair with tens and sevens holding 2♥7♦T♠7♥T♣, which was too good for gygenot09 who mucked. gygenot09, who was one of the 26 re-entries in the field, departed in third place for $7,130.00 in prize money.

Heads-up Chip Counts
Seat 2: wingyru (696,770 in chips)
Seat 6: pokerkluka (853,230 in chips)

pokerkluka held a small chip lead, and the two players were quick to pause the clock and look at a potential deal. The numbers presented were as follows:

pokerkluka: $11,158.29
wingyru: $10.347.71
Left in the middle: $1,000

pokerkluka was happy enough with the deal, but wingyru wanted a clean 50/50 chop, despite just $800 difference between the two payouts. pokerkluka wouldn't budge, so the cards were once again back in the air.

The pots were passed back and forth, with pokerkluka able to extend his advantage slightly before the following hand erupted:

What a cooler to end the tournament! wingyru must've been thinking a double up was coming holding a full house but pokerkluka revealed quad queens! Wow! A brutal finish for wingyru who takes home $9,486.00 for second place, as Luuk "pokerkluka" Gieles now adds a SCOOP title to the TCOOP title already in his possession, along with a handsome $13,020 in prize money. Congratulations!
