SCOOP 2014: MO G Kush crushes in Event #42-H ($2,100 NLHE 4-Max)
Short-handed poker is certainly one of the most entertaining formats, not only to watch, but also to play. There's always action and you're always in the game. It's no wonder that four-max is gaining so much in popularity. It's a format that's unfeasible for most live casinos to offer, but online, it's not a problem, as we saw in today's Event #42-H of the 2014 Spring Championship of Online Poker. It was a $2,100 No Limit Holdem 4-Max Event, spread over two days of play, and when it was all said and done, it was MO G Kush adding another title for Canada with victory worth an impressive $182,112 in prize money.
The field of 336 players ensured the guarantee was surpassed with the prize pool of $672,000 set to be shared among the top 40 place finishers.
The Team PokerStars Pros in action included Randy Lew, Angel Guillen, Nacho Barbero, Max Lykov, Bertrand Grospellier but they were early eliminations while Ike Haxton (35th - $4,764.48), Eugene Katchalov (25th - $5,517.12) and George Danzer (19th - $6,820.80) all made a profit but fell short of reaching Day 2 of play.
The first day of play would see the field of 336 reduced to just eight players after a gruelling day of 22 half-hour levels. The final eight would be led by former SCOOP champion BongBob with high-stakes crusher Zugwat close behind. Here's how they lined up for the start of Day 2:
Canada's takechip lost a preflop race to be first to fall in eighth place, before yadio suffered the same fate to be removed in seventh place. A few minutes later and Dowgh-Santos ran king-queen into floebbi's pocket queens to depart in sixth place as the players reformed onto a final table of five.
Final Table Line Up
Seat 1: Zugwat (307,187 in chips)
Seat 2: Aduobe4 (290,535 in chips)
Seat 3: MO G Kush (179,215 in chips)
Seat 4: floebbi (561,305 in chips)
Seat 5: BongBob (353,758 in chips)
Aduobe4 was the first to depart in fifth place, but unfortunately due to technical problems we don't have the details of the elimination. However what we can tell you is that the former WCOOP winner took home $24,474.24 for fifth place.
We're guessing most of Aduobe4's chips headed the way of BongBob, who broke out to a rather healthy chip advantage.
floebbi caught a lucky break to stay alive with pocket threes spiking a set on the flop to crack Bongbob's pocket queens however the luck would turn the other way for floebbi.
floebbi raised preflop and then fired bets on the flop and turn before being all in on the river on the board of 2♣A♥6♥Q♥A♣. floebbi held A♦K♣ for trips but Zugwat slowplayed 2♦2♥ for a flopped set that ended with a full house to take it down. floebbi was probably a little shocked to be bundled out like that in fourth place but $37,363.20 should provide some comfort.
We were down to three players, but Zugwat, MO G Kush and BongBob dug in their heels in an epic war of attrition that would take several long hours to break.
MO G Kush was the short stack, but a nice hand with a flopped set of sixes, followed by winning a big preflop race with ace-king against BongBob's pocket jacks saw MO G Kush climb right back into contention as all three players were relatively even in chips.
BongBob started to get the upper hand, winning more than a fair share of pots from the other two, and eventually Zugwat was forced to make a stand.
BongBob open-jammed all in from the small blind to force Zugwat to call off a fourteen big blind stack with 7♠7♦. BongBob held overcards with J♣Q♦ and connected with the board of Q♠A♣K♥J♥2♣. Two pair for BongBob would spell the end for Zugwat who collected $60,594.24 for third place.
Heads-up Chip Counts
Seat 3: MO G Kush (431,268 in chips)
Seat 5: BongBob (1,248,732 in chips)
BongBob held a three-to-one chip advantage when heads-up play commenced but again it was another long, tough contest with over ninety minutes of heads-up play before a champion would be decided.
The early pots were pretty tight, before MO G Kush went on a little rush with three significant pots in four hands. The final one of those hands would see MO G Kush collect bets on all three streets with a deceptive straight:
MO G Kush moved into the chip lead, but BongBob responded with a backdoor full house to rake in some chips and even things up once again as the heads-up battle entered its second hour.
BongBob got caught on a rather complex bluff where he floated the flop, raised the turn and then led the river, all with just jack-high, but MO G Kush improved to trips on the river to make the call and regather the momentum.
Ultimately, BongBob couldn't turn it around. The final hand would see BongBob raise the button, MO G Kush three-bet and BongBob four-bet shoved. MO G Kush made the call with 8♠8♥ and the race was on against BongBob's A♥9♦. BongBob found a pair on the A♠Q♦8♣ flop but MO G Kush spiked a set to take control of the hand. The turn was the T♠ to give BongBob a little hope with a straight draw, but the river delivered the K♥ to leave MO G Kush's set of eights to take it down.
BongBob will be a little disappointed but $111,693.12 for second place should heal some wounds as MO G Kush is the SCOOP champion winning $182,112! Congratulations!
