SCOOP 2014: Shawn "buck21" Buchanan trumps ElkY in Event #27-H ($1,050+R 5-Card Omaha H/L 6-Max Turbo)
One of the great things about covering the "high" events of the 2014 Spring Championship of Online Poker is the anticipation of which stars of the game might be there on the final table, competing for sums of money that make my eyes water. The fields are stacked full of talent, so we are guaranteed to see some of the best players in the world battle it out for the SCOOP crown. Today was one of those days.
In the online poker world, the names don't get much bigger than Shawn "buck21" Buchanan and Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier. They have done it all on the online poker felt, and today, they came together as the last two titans standing to battle for the SCOOP title. In the end it was Buchanan who came out on top to write another chapter in his impressive online poker resume and collect almost $100,000 in prize money.
Event #27 of the 2014 SCOOP attracted 138 of the world's best to compete in a $1,050+R 5-Card Omaha Hi/Lo 6-Max Turbo Event. There were 120 rebuys and 118 add-ons to see the prize pool swell to $376,000 to smash through the advertised guarantee.
Ike Haxton, George Danzer and Naoya Kihara were some of the other Team PokerStars Pros in the field but they fell well short of the money stage. Only the top 18 players would finish in the cash, with Aussie Millions champ, and recent SCOOP winner, Ami "Uhhmee" Barer bubbling the bubble in 20th place before the polarizing Luke "lb6121" Schwartz was the unlucky bubble boy in 19th spot.
One red spade was still alive in the field with Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier one of the short stacks when the final three tables were formed. However ElkY was able to gather some momentum to surge towards the final table. It would only take a couple of short hours for the final table to be reached, and when Sweden's Lena900 was wheeled out in 7th place at the hands of Shawn "buck21" Buchanan, our final table of six was formed as follows:
Final Table Line Up
Seat 1: bokkie87 (213,312 in chips)
Seat 2: Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (336,368 in chips)
Seat 3: SilentPurple (156,521 in chips)
Seat 4: Shawn "buck21" Buchanan (239,466 in chips)
Seat 5: dustin1980 (148,831 in chips)
Seat 6: Shanis34 (269,502 in chips)
The final table would kick off with a bang with dustin1980 eliminated on the very first hand of play. With the blinds at 10k/20k, Shawn "buck21" Buchanan opened with a pot-sized raise before dustin1980 moved all in holding 2♥A♦5♦K♣9♣. buck21 made the call with A♠Q♣3♦2♣K♦ and made a straight using king-queen when the board ran out J♦A♥3♥T♠T♦. There was no low possible so dustin1980 was left to depart the tournament in sixth place for $16,920.
SilentPurple survived an all-in clash with a chopped pot against Shanis34, but a short time later, Shanis34 wasn't quite so fortunate:
Shanis34 was all in preflop and looked in good shape to double up after flopping trips, but the flush draw arrived on the river for buck21 to land the knockout blow. Shanis34 took home $24,440 for fifth place.
bokkie87 would be the next to fall as Team PokeStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier started to flex his considerable muscle. buck21 opened the action with a raise, before bokkie87 moved all in for slightly more. ElkY then cold four-bet shoved all in but couldn't deter buck21 from making the call with 7♣4♠T♦T♣3♦. bokkie87 held 3♣A♠6♥7♠Q♣ but neither could connect with the board of 5♠9♠5♦J♣K♣ to leave ElkY's Q♦8♦2♥Q♠A♦ for queens and fives to scoop the considerable pot. That left bokkie87 to exit in fourth place for $31,960 in prize money.
SilentPurple was on the short stack, but recovered some chips taking three-quarters of a pot from ElkY when both shared the same low, but SilentPurple's set of aces collected the high.
However the comeback of SilentPurple would be brought to an abrupt halt when a cooler of a flop would spell disaster:
SilentPurple flopped trips at the wrong time as buck21's full house ended up with quads to end the run of SilentPurple in third place for a $48,880 score.
Heads-up Chip Counts
Seat 2: ElkY (350,220 in chips)
Seat 4: buck21 (1,013,780 in chips)
Shawn "buck21" Buchanan held a healthy three-to-one chip advantage over Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier as two of the world's finest players were going at it for the SCOOP crown.
With little action on the first four heads-up pots, the fireworks would erupt on hand number five.
buck21 opened with a raise before ElkY moved all in with A♣9♦2♥8♥9♥. buck21 made the call with 7♣5♠K♠A♥K♦ with a shot at the SCOOP title. The board would arrive T♠6♥4♠K♣A♦ to see ElkY make a pair of aces and eight-low, but that wasn't enough as buck21 scooped the pot with a set of kings and a seven-low to claim the title!
It was a great run by ElkY but the Team PokerStars Pro falls narrowly short of his second SCOOP title, picking up $65,800 for second place.
However the SCOOP watch goes to a man who has tasted SCOOP success two times in the past, and was the first ever PokerStars Triple COOP winner . Congratulations to Shawn "buck21" Buchanan who writes another chapter in an impressive poker career with his third SCOOP title and another $97,760 in prize money!
