SCOOP 2014: vovtroy victorious in Event #12-H ($2,100 Stud)
It was a marathon final table, but you'd expect nothing less when eight of the world's best Seven-Card Stud players come together to play for a SCOOP title. There were Sunday Millions winners, former WCOOP champions and even a WSOP bracelet winner of the $50k Player's Championship variety. However in the end, it was vovtroy from Russia who secured victory with an impressive final table performance to collect $36,060 in prize money.
It was Event #12-H of the 2014 Spring Championship of Online Poker, a $2,100 Stud Event that attracted a field of 66 of the finest mixed-game players in the world. The prize pool swelled to $132,000 to smash the advertised guarantee.
Bertrand Grospellier, Eugene Katchalov and Nacho Barbero were early casualties representing Team PokerStars, while Theo Jorgensen and George Danzer made it as far as the final three tables before succumbing short of the money.
Only the top eight players would finish in the money, and with a bubble worth $5,280, there were some interesting moments during hand-for-hand play.
Bernardo "bedias" Dias was hanging on for dear life as the short stack as action erupted all around. Paul "paulgees81" Volpe took a huge blow after running into Fred_Brinks' full house, and it looked like paulgees81 would be our bubble. However paulgees81 fought hard to win a couple of pots to get head above water.
On the other table, Christoph "monika13" Haller was loving the prolonged bubble, winning 16 of the last 26 hands played when five-handed. monika13 was able to extend the advantage at the top of the chip counts, while also taking care of that pesky bubble.
It would be Fresh_oO_D who was all in on fourth street holding a pair of jacks against monika13's pair of sixes. However Fresh_oO_D couldn't improve any further as monika13 made two pair with tens and sixes, leaving Fresh_oO_D to depart empty-handed as our final table of eight was set as follows:
Final Table Line Up
Seat 1: vovtroy (44,044 in chips)
Seat 2: Fred_Brink (42,484 in chips)
Seat 3: biurtyj (12,678 in chips)
Seat 4: David "Gunslinger3" Bach (34,430 in chips)
Seat 5: lennart (52,576 in chips)
Seat 6: Christoph "monika13" Haller (118,564 in chips)
Seat 7: Bernardo "bedias" Dias (6,360 in chips)
Seat 8: Paul "paulgees81" Volpe (18,864 in chips)
bedias caught an early, and much-needed, double up with trip fours to start the final table with a bang, and kept the momentum going with the quick elimination of biurtyj.
The action erupted on fifth street, with biurtyj committing all in. biurtyj's final board read (Q♠J♥8♦) Q♣3♥2♠3♦ for queens up, but bedias showed (4♠J♠K♥) J♣6♠4♦J♦ for a full house with jacks full of fours. Just like that, bedias was back into contention as biurtyj was out in eighth place for $5,280 in prize money.
The run of bedias didn't stop there, with the elimination of Paul "paulgees81" Volpe just moments later, with a rather impressive looking board:
Fred_Brink was reluctant to give it up, but with bedias showing three aces, Fred_Brink really had no choice. paulgees81's two pair wasn't enough as the former Sunday Million winner was eliminated in seventh place for $5,940 in prize money.
Fred_Brink was on the brink, but a double up with aces up was followed by an interesting hand against bedias.
On sixth street, bedias was showing an intimidating 2♦T♦4♦7♦ but Fred_Brink check-raised with K♦J♣J♠9♠. bedias went into the tank before saying "nh" in the chat box, flashing the Q♦ and folding the queen-high flush.
Who knows if Fred_Brink had it, but he certainly had it next hand, raising the river with a full house against monika13 to climb back into contention.
The six-handed battle was tight, but in the end, it was indeed Fred_Brink who was next to go. Fred_Brink was forced to give up a couple of pots to resistance, before getting all in on fourth street against David "Gunslinger3" Bach. Fred_Brink ended with (8♥K♥7♣) T♣A♣4♦7♦ for just a pair of sevens as Gunslinger3 made (6♦2♠6♥) 2♦9♠9♦T♦ for two pair. Fred_Brink was a former Sunday Million and WCOOP champion but missed out on the PokerStars triple, departing in sixth place for $7,260.
If the six-handed battle was tight, then it was nothing compared to the final five as it would take over an hour for the next elimination. During that period it was vovtroy who started to gain control of the table. A full house against monika13 drew a monster pot for vovtroy, and another with kings full of fives against bedias shot vovtroy into the chip lead.
However true to name, Gunslinger3 wasn't going to just sit back and watch. Gunslinger3 made a nice call down on the river with two pair to clip vovtroy and followed it up with an ace-high flush to challenge for the chip lead.
Meanwhile bedias couldn't get much going and made a final stand on fourth street showing 8♥J♣. vovtroy made the call showing 6♥2♣. The board of bedias would run out (9♥9♣4♥) 8♥J♣3♦K♣ for an unimproved pair of nines which wasn't enough as vovtroy showed (J♠J♥Q♥) 6♥2♣2♦3♠ for jacks up. Bernardo "bedias" Dias is another a former Sunday Million winner but he misses out on the SCOOP title today with fifth place worth $9,900.
The battle of vovtroy and Gunslinger3 would continue as the two locked horns in a number of pots. vovtroy took a chunk of chips making two pair in two consecutive hands to dent the momentum of Gunslinger3, before lennart got in the act, making a straight against Gunslinger3's two pair.
That left Gunslinger3 on the ropes and moments later, all in on third street against his nemesis in vovtroy. Gunslinger3 opened (A♦8♥3♥) 9♣8♣5♣T♥ for a pair of eights which was bettered by vovtroy's (Q♦K♣2♠) 9♦4♦6♠Q♠ for a pair of queens.
It was a rapid fall from grace for David "Gunslinger3" Bach, who continues to prove he is one of the best mixed game players in the world. Bach picked up $13,200 for fourth place.
monika13 continued to chip up while vovtroy rarely put a foot wrong. vovtroy won another big pot with yet another full house, getting value on all streets against lennart.
lennart was now the one under pressure, and despite a couple of double ups, lennart would be the next to fall. A raising war erupted on third street with the last of lennart's chips committed into the middle against vovtroy. The board of vovtroy ran out a rather uninspiring (K♠5♣Q♦) 5♦3♣9♥J♦ for just a pair of fives, but lennart couldn't beat it making just a pair of fours on a board of (4♣5♠T♥) A♠9♠4♠6♣. lennart collected $19,800 for third place.
Heads-up Chip Counts
Seat 1: vovtroy (268,530 in chips)
Seat 6: monika13 (61,470 in chips)
vovtroy started with a four-to-one chip advantage but that lead was quickly reduced when monika13's aggression would win ten out of the first twelve heads-up pots, and when monika13's two pair was called down on the river, things were very quickly back to even.
It was at this point that the two players decided to look at a potential deal. With chip stacks virtually identical, they agreed to an even chop with $1,500 and the SCOOP title left in the middle to play for.
The break seemed to work for vovtroy who picked up a big pot moments later with a pair of sevens to regain the ascendency.
The two players then exchanged 100k pots in consecutive hands with both players making a flush. monika13 looked to be back in the contest with value on all streets with a king-high flush, but next hand vovtroy won an equal-sized pot with an ace-high flush.
Moments later, when a raising war broke out on fourth street, monika13's last chips were in the middle and vovtroy had a shot at the title.
vovtroy was clubbing with (4♣8♣) 2♣3♣ while monika13 went with (4♦A♣) Q♠3♥. monika13 completely bricked out with J♦6♥5♠ leaving him with just ace-high as vovtroy caught a pair of fours with 6♠4♥T♠ to take it down! It was a great run by Christoph "monika13" Haller who collects a post-deal total of $34,560 for second place as it's victory for Russia, with vovtroy taking the SCOOP title and $36,060 in prize money. Congratulations!
