SCOOP 2015: alien slayer conquers ludovi333 to win Event 41-H ($5,200 PLO 6-Max, 3-Stack)
This was no turbo, this Event 41-H which gave Pot Limit Omaha players three 5,000 chip stacks to use as they saw fit. Triple sized stacks with half hour levels, short-handed tables, and top flight players made this one of the deepest of the deep stack tournaments.
The high version of the event had a big $5,200 price tag with a $300,000 guarantee. There was never a doubt of hitting that number with a big crowd putting up their money to more than triple the guarantee, coming just 11 players shy of making it an even $1,000,000.
The final numbers showed 189 getting in the game to create a $945,000 prize pool with a very nice $225,000 payout to the winner. The final 24 were set to get a piece of the money but they took their time getting there. The tournament was scheduled as a two-day event and almost went on the over night break while still hand-for-hand.
They were more than 100 big blinds deep with 30 players still in the game and it took two hours to lose six players to hit the money. The bubble burst during the last level of the day when kareempirias' elimination put the rest of the field in the money. Dan "djk123" Kelly and TheMuppet were eliminated before the clock was paused to leave 22 returning of Day 2.
Former Super Tuesday champion Ludovic "ludovi333" Geilich was leading at the break with some big names trying to chase him down including Viktor "Isildur1" Blom, James "Andy McLEOD" Obst, and Team PokerStars' George Danzer.
Blom and Obst were able to make it to the final two tables after the restart but that is where their runs ended. The two tables were going at it for more than two hours when they began hand-for-hand action with seven remaining. It took 23 hands to set the final table and it happened with Geilich sending out Tom "tjbentham" Bentham.
They were heads up to the 9♣8♥4♦ flop when it took four bets to put Bentham at risk with A♦J♦T♣7♣. His big wrap draw was up against Geilich's T♠9♦8♦6♣ but he missed it all when it ran out 5♠3♣ to send the Supernova out in 7th.
The final table was underway with a very healthy average stack of 79 big blinds. Finding the next SCOOP champion was not going to be a quick affair.
Final Table chip counts:
Seat 1: keves1717 (525,518 in chips)
Seat 2: Benny "toweliestar" Spindler (302,843 in chips)
Seat 3: Slavik_Krs (143,915 in chips)
Seat 4: alien slayer (473,651 in chips)
Seat 5: George Danzer (498,365 in chips)
Seat 6: Ludovic "ludovi333" Geilich (890,708 in chips)
Slavik_Krs aced out, eliminated in 6th
As anticipated, these six players had the skill and chips to drag out the final table without much pressure from the blinds. They played six-handed for nearly an hour before anyone was at risk from hitting the rail. Slavik_Krs was that player after losing a big pot earlier in action and moved all-in against George Danzer after potting twice.
Slavik_Krs needed to hit something on the flop to make it interesting but T♦T♣2♠ didn't help him. The 5♥ turn left him with just a gutshot to stay alive but the J♦ river did not fit that need to set him as the first off the final table, eliminated in 6th place for $42,525.
Geilich extends lead with straight
Slavik-Krs' elimination might have loosened things up a bit as another big pot came on the very next hand. Geilich was involved when it was four-ways to a K♠4♦2♥ flop with Spindler, alien slayer, and keves1717.
They all checked the flop and keves1717 put out a pot-sized bet after the 3♣ turn to get heads up with Geilich. It was another 127,555 from keves1717 on the 7♦ river and Geilich called with a wheel-making A♣Q♦5♠2♣ to best keves1717's K♣Q♥6♥6♠ and extend his lead on top of the counts.
Seat 1: keves1717 (360,948 in chips)
Seat 2: Benny "toweliestar" Spindler (119,273 in chips)
Seat 4: alien slayer (550,246 in chips)
Seat 5: George Danzer (405,270 in chips)
Seat 6: Ludovic "ludovi333" Geilich (1,399,263 in chips)
No gold star for toweliestar, eliminated in 5th
The floodgates were open to kick the action up and Benny "toweliestar" Spindler had to take a shot with just 10% of Geilich's stack. His pre-flop pot bet was piled on top by alien slayer and he called with his tournament life on the line.
alien slayer: A♥K♥Q♦4♠
Spindler had to like his chances pre-flop but the joy quickly went away when alien slayer flopped well. The Q♥4♣4♦ flop was about the best alien slayer could expect and left Spindler with just one out to double. Only the A♠ could save him but the board ran out 2♦6♥ to deny Spindler his 3rd SCOOP title.
Danzer can't double, eliminated in 4th
Just four hands later it was reigning WSOP Player of the Year George Danzer trying to get himself among the leaders at the short-handed table. His big hand began when he min-raised under the gun with alien slayer coming along in the big blind to the 8♦6♥5♣ flop.
alien slayer check/raised Danzer all-in and he called needing help with A♦8♣7♦6♣ against alien slayer's flopped straight T♥9♣7♥4♥. The board ran out 7♠9♥ to give Danzer a nine-high straight but alien slayer improved to the ten-high straight to send Danzer out in 4th place for $80,325.
Seat 1: keves1717 (279,398 in chips)
Seat 4: alien slayer (1,225,262 in chips)
Seat 6: Ludovic "ludovi333" Geilich (1,330,340 in chips)
keves1717 feeling left out, eliminated in 3rd
The vast majority of chips were now sitting between Geilich and alien slayer but keves1717 still had plenty in relation to the blinds. It would take some work to make an impact and he tried to get some back against alien slayer.
They both saw the Q♥6♠4♥ flop when keves1717 bet with Q♦8♦7♦5♦ and alien slayer put him all-in with K♦T♥7♠6♥. keves1717 quickly called with top pair and a big wrap draw but alien slayer improved on the K♠ turn. keves1717 missed all his river out when it came J♦ to send him out in 3rd for the first six-digit payout.
Seat 4: alien slayer (1,801,410 in chips)
Seat 6: Ludovic "ludovi333" Geilich (1,033,590 in chips)
alien slayer survives marathon battle to win Event 41-H title
It took nearly as long to play down the heads up match between alien slayer and Geilich then it did getting rid of the other four players. The blinds never did push the action and they played for nearly two hours with both players taking their turn with the chip lead. alien slayer grabbed the advantage late and never let it go. While they were very close in chips, they agreed to an even chop leaving $10,000 behind for the winner.
Like many of the hands in this PLO tournament, the big chips didn't get involved until after the flop. The final hand saw alien slayer with more than a 2-to-1 lead against Geilich before both saw the T♥7♣4♥ flop and checked it to the Q♦ turn.
Geilich checked again then called a 75,000 bet from alien slayer before the 4♠ river. Geilich checked again but this time raised all-in after a bet from alien slayer. It was a quick call with the turned full house Q♣Q♠6♥2♦ which was better than Geilich's flopped two pair K♦T♠7♥5♦.
Geilich picked up $185,598 for his second place finish, the biggest of his career, to go along with his other six-digit payout for winning Super Tuesday just a little over one year ago.
alien slayer earned his first major online tournament victory along with $196,598 and the custom watch for his time. It was a big tournament with plenty of play, a fine way to finish off the last SCOOP weekend.
