SCOOP 2015: James Obst obliterates #10-H field, collects another 'COOP title ($1,050 PLO 6-Max)

We're used to seeing poker's top players -- live and/or online -- showing up repeatedly at the ends of SCOOP events, particularly the "High" buy-in ones. So to report that James "Andy McLEOD" Obst has won himself yet another 'COOP title tonight isn't necessarily the most alarming news to share.

But still, it's eye-popping stuff, what with Obst having already earned himself the rare "Triple COOP" distinction by having won two SCOOP titles before, a WCOOP event, plus a TCOOP. The one the Australian adds to PokerStars résumé today was Event #10-H of this year's SCOOP series, a $1,050 buy-in, six-handed pot-limit Omaha event with rebuys.

Here's the story of Obst's success... again.

James "Andy McLEOD" Obst

Day 1

When all of the late registering and rebuying was over, there were 286 entries total for a prize pool of $759,000 -- edging toward twice the event's $400K guarantee. The tournament drew plenty of stars, with several of those making deep runs familiar from previous successes in 'COOP events and elsewhere.

Among the cashers as Tuesday night wound down were Sam "tr1cky7" Trickett (36th, $4,933.50), Stephen "adiprene1″ McDonald (34th, $4,933.50), Bryn "BrynKenney" Kenney (30th, $5,692.50), Sebastian "p0cket00" Sikorski (28th, $5,692.50), Benny "toweliestar" Spindler ($5,692.50), 2015 SCOOP Event #4-H winner Mohsin "sms9231" Charania (19th, $6,831), Artem "Artem205" Metalidi (18th, $8,349), Sampsa "mahtipeluri" Hytönen (17th, $8,349), Farid "SHiiPTHATiSH" Jattin (16th, $8,349), Mike "SirWatts" Watson (15th, $8,349), Dermot "flounder18" Blain (14th, $8,349), Martin "nizmo jiz" Kozlov (12th, $11,764.50), and Elior "Crazy Elior" Sion (11th, $11,764.50).

2009 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Joe "jcada99" Cada sat atop the counts overnight, with the red-hot Dzmitry "Colisea" Urbanovich -- winner of two SCOOP events a year ago (the $2,100 8-game and $320 2-7 triple draw) -- the nearest challenger and Obst in third position.

Just 10 made it through to Wednesday's final day, with several other notables left to chase those at the top:

1. Joe "jcada99" Cada (Canada) -- 642,217
2. Dzmitry "Colisea" Urbanovich (Poland) -- 380,125
3. James "Andy McLEOD" Obst (Australia) -- 350,065
4. flong78 (United Kingdom) -- 289,963
5. Artem "roi kin23" Litvinov (Russia) -- 269,572
6. John "dagunman" O'Shea (Ireland) -- 256,578
7. Jannick "EDWARDHOPPER" Wrang (Denmark) -- 188,284
8. André "Sira Al Aziz" Santos (Portugal) -- 130,835
9. BriDge2PaiN (Ireland) -- 130,365
10. Zagalo87 (Portugal) -- 106,996

Day 2

Once the second day of play got going it would take over two hours for four more to fall and the final table to begin. Following the elimination of André "Sira Al Aziz" Santos (10th, $111,764.50), Zagalo87 (ninth), Jannick 'EDWARDHOPPER' Wrang (eighth), and after a long final table bubble Dzmitry "Colisea" Urbanovich (seventh) were eliminated, with those three taking away $20,493 apiece for their finishes.

With James "Andy McLEOD" Obst the new chip leader -- and destined to remain so from that point forward -- the final table was underway.

Seat 1: Artem "roi kin23" Litvinov (Russia) -- 90,893
Seat 2: Joe "jcada99" Cada (Canada) -- 523,558
Seat 3: flong78 (United Kingdom) -- 216,231
Seat 4: John "dagunman" O'Shea (Ireland) -- 843,512
Seat 5: BriDge2PaiN (Ireland) -- 128,123
Seat 6: James "Andy McLEOD" Obst (Australia) -- 942,683

They'd played just over one orbit at the final table when the next knockout took place.

With the blinds at 3,000/6,000, leader James "Andy McLEOD" Obst opened for 14,999 from the cutoff, then Artem "roi kin23" Litvinov three-bet to 53,997 from a seat over. It folded back to Obst who called, and the pair saw the flop come T♣J♠A♠. At that Obst fired a pot-sized bet and Litvinov called all in with the 21,730 he had left.

Obst turned over J♦T♦9♣8♦ for two pair and a straight draw while Litvinov had A♣K♠K♣5♠ for aces and a flush draw. The turn brought the J♥ to improve Obst to a full house, and after the 3♣ river Litvinov was out in sixth.

Over the next half-hour Obst would continue to chip up, nearing 1.8 million while no one else had as much as 500,000. Then a hand arose that saw John "dagunman" O'Shea open from the small blind with a 3x raise to 30,000, a severely-short BriDge2PaiN reraise all in from the big blind for 40,749, and O'Shea call.

O'Shea had A♠A♦Q♥6♣ and BriDge2PaiN Q♠T♦7♥6♦, then the T♥A♥3♠A♣K♥ board made quads for O'Shea to send BriDge2PaiN railward in fifth.

They pushed on into the second day's fourth hour of play, and with the blinds 5,000/10,000 flong78 min-raised to 20,000 from the button, James "Andy McLEOD" Obst reraised to 70,000 from the small blind, then after Joe "jcada99" Cada folded John "dagunman" O'Shea shoved all in for just over 145,000 and Obst called.

Obst had A♦K♠K♣J♦ versus O'Shea's A♣Q♠T♣2♦. The community cards came J♣7♠9♥K♥9♦, making kings full of nines for Obst and ending O'Shea's run in fourth.

John "dagunman" O'Shea

Three hands later Obst was up pover 2.3 miillion with flong87 next with just over 275,000 and Cada third with less than 170,000. That's when flong78 raised to 42,000 from the button, Obst three-bet to 138,000 from the small blind, flong78 pushed all in for 277,037 total, and Obst called.

Andy McLEOD showed K♦Q♠J♥7♠ while flong78 had picked up A♣A♥T♠3♣. A Q♦Q♣4♦ flop smacked Obst's hand, giving him trip queens and the lead, and after the 7♣ turn and 7♦ river he'd made another full house and claimed another victim as flong78 was sent out in third.

Cada was in dire straits to start heads-up play with just 155,781 to Obst's 2,389,219 -- a worse than 15-to-1 chip deficit. But though low on chips, Cada wasn't low on humor:

jcada99: gl =)
Andy McLEOD: u2
jcada99: YOU NEED IT!
jcada99: HAHA

Joe "jcada99" Cada

Cada would win the first small pot between the pair, then Obst the next two. Then came a hand in which Cada limped in from the button, Obst checked, and the flop fell J♦T♥5♦. Obst checked, Cada bet 12,000, Obst check-raised to 60,000, Cada pushed all in for 131,781 total, and Obst called.

Andy McLEOD: Q♦T♦7♥2♠ -- a pair of tens and a flush draw
jcada99: J♥8♦6♣5♥ -- jacks and fives

The turn was the A♥ and Cada was a card away from doubling, but the river brought the 7♦ to complete Obst's flush and give him yet another 'COOP title

Congratulations to Triple COOPer James "Andy McLEOD" Obst for topping another tough field in this "High" event to earn the Event #10-H title and $166,980 first prize.
