SCOOP 2015: Matheus "pimenta7" Pimenta draws a win in Event #8-M ($215 NL Draw), mement_mori takes third
When it comes to the SCOOP, no form of poker is left behind, be it the most cutting-edge innovation or Wild Bill Hickok's game of choice. No-limit five card draw is often referenced as one of the purest forms of poker, since it's not just a game of partial information... it's a game of almost no information at all. Bet sizing, opponent tendencies, and the number of cards drawn are all one has to work with and a decorated bunch used this arsenal to earn their way to the final table tonight. Among them was one of our Red Spades, Team Pro Online's Mickey "mement_mori" Petersen, an MTT beast who is one of the top 40 all-time earners in the SCOOP with over $596,000 in winnings. Another was Russia's vovtroy, who won a SCOOP watch last year in Event #12-H ($2,100 Stud) for $36k. However, it was a young Brazilian who triumphed over all. Matheus "pimenta7" Pimenta finished fourth in a WCOOP NL Draw event last fall, final tabled the Super Tuesday less than two months ago, and won the BSOP Super High Roller event in November 2013 for a R$346,200 score (about $115,000). Now pimenta7 walks among the online giants with a SCOOP title in Event #8-M ($215 NL Draw)
327 players entered Event #8-M, creating a $65,400.00 prize pool. 42 places were paid with first place set to earn $13,734.00.
Blinds were 3,000/6,000 on what turned out to be a lengthy final table bubble. Things were looking up for Monstre2278 when he crippled 2014 SCOOP champ chosenwinner, his threes full of sevens crushing a pair of aces. Chosenwinner was left with only 5,000 in chips but doubled three times in the next three hands to get back up to 57,300. Chosenwinner had chipped all the way up to 94,840 when he open-shoved from the small blind, but pickledoe looked him up from the big. Both players drew three cards. Chosenwinner turned up a pair of jacks, but they were no match for pickledoe's pair of aces and he went out in seventh place.
Final table chip counts
Seat 1: pickledoe (452,072 in chips)
Seat 2: Monstre2278 (137,639 in chips)
Seat 3: pimenta7 (411,433 in chips)
Seat 4: Turnira (379,149 in chips)
Seat 5: vovtroy (168,764 in chips)
Seat 6: mement_mori (85,943 in chips)
Short stack mement_mori got off to a hot start, doubling through pickledoe with a pair of jacks and a queen kicker vs. a pair of jacks and a nine kicker. Then, with the blinds up to 4,000/8,000, mement_mori opened for 16,000 on the button and Monstre2278 shoved for 167,936 from the big blind. Mement_mori called and drew one while Monstre2278 stood pat. Monstre2278 revealed queens and eights with an ace kicker, but mement_mori turned over aces and fives to end his run in sixth place.
Soon thereafer, a raising war broke out between chip leader pimenta7 and pickledoe that ended with 912,00 chips in the middle before the draw. Pimenta7 made the final raise, a six-bet shove for 449,333 and pickledoe called. Both players stood pat and pickledoe turned over a queen-high straight, only to lose to pimenta7's queen-high flush. Pimenta7 scored a massive double-up, leaving pickledoe on only 54,500.
Pickledoe doubled through mement_mori with aces and threes vs. a pair of jacks, but he didn't hang on to those chips for long. He moved all-in for 97,134 a few hands later and vovtroy looked him up from the big blind. Vovtroy drew one card and pickledoe drew three. Vovtroy hit jacks full of eights on the draw while pickledoe's pair of kings did not improve, and he hit the rail in fifth place.
Turnira maintained a stack in the 300k range before losing a huge pot when pimenta7 made trip tens. Down to 72,000, Turnira moved all-in before the draw and pimenta7 called. Turnira drew three cards and pimenta7 drew one. Turnira's ace-high did not improve and once again, pimenta7 turned over trip tens for the win.
Two hands later, mement_mori open-shoved for his last 90,467 and pimenta7 called. Mement_mori drew three cards and pimenta7 took two. Although mement_mori improved to trip fours, they weren't enough to beat pimenta7's trip aces and our last Red Spade standing had to settle for third place.
Heads-up chip counts
Seat 3: pimenta7 (1,430,452 in chips)
Seat 5: vovtroy (204,548 in chips)
Pimenta7 was firmly in control and when he won a 140,000 pot on the first hand of heads-up play, it looked like it could be a very short match. However, vovtroy wasn't about to go quietly and doubled up a few minutes later with trip sevens vs. pimenta7's pair of kings. Pimenta7 went back to work and whittled vovtroy down to 136,000 in chips before he doubled again, this time with trip queens against a pair of jacks.
Back up to 322,000, vovtroy doubled a third time after calling pimenta7's predraw shove. Both players drew one card and vovtroy's aces and eights took down the pot over pimenta7's queens and sixes. Now up to 670,000, vovtroy three-bet pimenta7's opening raise to 84,000. Pimenta7 called and drew one while vovtroy stood pat. Vovtroy bet 87,500 and pimenta7 called, but snap-mucked at the sight of vovtroy's pat jack-high straight.
After vovtroy raked in that 350,000 pot, both players agreed to pause the action and discuss a potential deal. Here's how they stacked up at the time:
Only $108 separated their ICM shares and both players agreed to the deal. With $500 still in play, cards went back in the air.
Vovtroy asked pimenta7 if he wanted to "flip" for the rest and go all-in on the next hand, but that didn't happen. In fact, heads-up play continued for another hour after the deal was made. The counts stayed relatively close until pimenta7 four-bet to 246,000 predraw and vovtroy called. Vovtroy drew one card and pimenta7 stood pat. Vovtroy checked, pimenta7 bet 305,100 and vovtroy folded, conceding the 502,000 pot. Pimenta7 moved up to 1.05 million in chips while vovtroy sank to 583,000.
Pimenta7 pulled away by taking down two more significant pots. In the first, he four-bet shoved for 1.1 million and earned a fold. In the second, he made it 55,000 to go and vovtroy called. Vovtroy discarded three while pimenta7 drew two. Vovtroy check-called pimenta7's 69,100 bet, but couldn't beat his aces and fives.
Down to 268,000, vovtroy moved all-in from the big blind and pimenta7 called. Both players drew two cards. Although vovtroy made a pair of nines, they were no match for pimenta7's pair of queens, and the Brazilian at last captured his first SCOOP title.
Congratulations to Matheus "pimenta7" Pimenta on joining the ranks of SCOOP champions! He banked $12,065.87 for the win, while runner-up vovtroy earned $11,674.33.
