Sunday Million: €urop€an collects title, $185K; 2nd for Espen "sh4wshank" Sørlie

It was another big turnout for this week's Sunday Million, with 6,685 taking part to create a guarantee-smashing prize pool of $1,337,000. The top 990 finishers split the cash, and after more than 12 hours of poker there were two players striking a heads-up deal to claim the largest portions of the prize pool.

Finland's €urop€an would ultimately take top honors tonight, claiming $185,500 in the process. Also making it to the heads-up chop was Espen "sh4wshank" Sørlie of Canada who came away with $168,270.20 for his efforts. It was quite a night for Sørlie who while final tabling the Sunday Million also found himself with a big stack at the final table of the FTOPS Main Event on Full Tilt Poker. Read on to learn more.

It took nine hours and 45 minutes for that big field to work all of the way down to just 18 players seated around the final two tables, at which point _Prinsesse_7 and €urop€an led the way as the only players with more than 10 million chips.

Soon Play2win$kk (18th), -Plz1Tiime- (17th), and smashingaaak (16th) were successively hitting the rail, each earning $3,743.60 for their finishes. KidTaxMan (15th), Black88 (14th), DJMiWez (13th) followed, picking up $5,615.40 apiece. Then Pavulon BB (12th), bodamos (11th), and DSRasumussen (10th) went out, each of them cashing for $7,487.20.

With _Prinsesse_7 still on top and David "My Brim Low" Ivers having edged into second position, the final table was underway.

Seat 1: David "My Brim Low" Ivers (Costa Rica) -- 15,055,104
Seat 2: bandi136 (Israel) -- 6,206,581
Seat 3: trump029 (Russia) -- 2,275,384
Seat 4: _Prinsesse_7 (Norway) -- 16,714,491
Seat 5: Espen "sh4wshank" Sørlie (Canada) -- 6,217,664
Seat 6: metis669 (Russia) -- 4,742,172
Seat 7: €urop€an (Finland) -- 11,669,867
Seat 8: Mom`s_lies (Norway) -- 1,818,110
Seat 9: RadimSoudsky (Czech Republic) -- 2,150,627

On just the fourth hand of the final table, the blinds were 100k/200k when metis669 opened with a min-raise to 400,000 from middle position, then Mom`s_lies reraised all in for 1,638,110 from the hijack seat. It folded back around to metis669 who made the call, turning over A♣J♥ while Mom`s_lies showed 7♦7♣.

The 9♣8♦K♣ was okay for Mom`s_lies, but the J♦ fell on fourth street to give metis669 jacks. The river was the K♥, and Mom`s_lies was out in ninth.

About five minutes later they were in the same level when €urop€an raised 2x to 400,000 from late position, then trump029 shoved for 1,925,384 from the big blind and €urop€an called.

It was K♣Q♣ for €urop€an and A♦J♥ for trump029. The K♥7♣4♥ flop swiftly swung the advantage to €urop€an, and after the 5♠ turn and 6♣ river trump029 was eliminated in eighth.

The blinds moved up to 125k/250k, and after a €urop€an open to 500,000 from middle position, RadimSoudsky reraised to 1,355,627 from a seat over then David "My Brim Low" Ivers flat-called the reraise from the button. It folded to _Prinsesse_7 in the big blind who also called, and €urop€an called as well.

Four players saw a flop come 8♥J♦3♣, and after _Prinsesse_7 checked, €urop€an bet 1,908,405 which was enough to earn folds from the other two still with chips. €urop€an showed J♠7♦ for top pair while RadimSoudsky had 4♥4♦. The remaining cards came 3♠ then 2♠, giving €urop€an the pot and ending RadimSoudsky's tournament in seventh.

The remaining six players made it to the tourney's 10-and-a-half-hour break, then shortly after play resumed the blinds were 150k/300k when metis669 open-raised all in for 2,805,282 from the cutoff seat and after David "My Brim Low" Ivers reraised over the top from the small blind, bandi136 folded from the big blind.

metis669 held Q♦7♦ and needed improvement against the A♠K♥ of Ivers. But the board rolled out 9♣3♣T♣, then 6♥, then 3♥, and metis669 was out in sixth.

It would take another 40 minutes for the next elimination to come, then two knockouts arrived within the space of a couple of minutes.

With the blinds up to 250k/500k, Espen "sh4wshank" Sørlie raised to 1 million from the cutoff seat, then bandi136 reraised all in for 4,162,640 from the big blind and Sørlie called.

bandi136 had K♠K♦ and looked to be in good shape to double versus Sørlie's 2♦2♣. But the board ran out 5♠6♣3♦A♥4♣, giving Sørlie a straight and reducing the field to four.

Five hands after that David "My Brim Low" Ivers was open-raising all in from the button for 2,519,065 (about five big blinds) and getting one caller in _Prinsesse_7 from the small blind. It was _Prinsesse_7's A♦8♥ versus My Brim Low's A♣7♣. The community cards came 5♦K♥9♠Q♠2♥, meaning _Prinsesse_7's kicker played and Ivers was done in fourth.

A short while later the blinds were 300k/600k when Espen "sh4wshank" Sørlie opened for 1.2 million from the button/under the gun, then _Prinsesse_7 pushed all in for 10,982,871 from the big blind. Sørlie called, turning over A♠T♦, while _Prinsesse_7 had J♥T♠. The board came nine-high -- 9♥4♦6♦5♥2♠ -- and _Prinsesse_7 was knocked out in third.

The final pair played one small hand, then paused the tournament to discuss a possible deal with Espen "sh4wshank" Sørlie in front with 39,925,220 to €urop€an's 26,924,780.

The proposed figures would give Sørlie $170,088.56, €urop€an $163,681.64, and leave $20,000 for which to play. After some discussion -- including €urop€an pointing out that Sørlie was in fact also leading the final table of the FTOPS Main Event on Full Tilt Poker -- sh4wshank agreed to let €urop€an have $165,500 in the deal and the numbers were adjusted accordingly.

Running hot as Sørlie was might well have had something to do with his generous approach to the negotiations:

Soon play resumed, and before long €urop€an had seized the chip lead away from Sørlie. They'd battle onward for about a half-hour, with €urop€an gradually moving up over 53 million while sh4wshank slipped down to about 13.5 million. Then with the blinds up to 500k/1m, the final hand at last took place.

It began with an all-in push from Sørlie for 13,424,470 that €urop€an swiftly called. Sørlie had K♥6♦ but had only one live card against €urop€an's A♦6♠. The board came 8♦7♦5♥T♥A♣, and it was all over -- €urop€an had won.

Congratulations to €urop€an for outlasting a huge field of nearly 6,700 players to win this week's Sunday Million and a $185K-plus first prize. And kudos as well to Espen "sh4wshank" Sørlie who not only claimed more than $168K of the Sunday Million prize pool, but earned another huge score by chopping the FTOPS Main Event as this tournament reached its conclusion. Not a bad night's work!
