Sunday Million: Mantas "bagoch" Bagočius bags better than $168K with win

Sunday night saw the World Series of Poker Main Event dwindle down to less than 100 players in Las Vegas, with Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody falling just shy of making it to that group (finishing 113th) while his teammate Daniel "KidPoker" Negreanu continued to battle as the field shrunk further. Meanwhile the Sunday Million -- online poker's most popular weekly tournament -- played on as usual, another event that similarly brings together players from all over the world, albeit virtually.

This week there were 5,399 entries in the $215 buy-in tournament, and after almost exactly 12 hours it was Mantas "bagoch" Bagočius finishing with all of the chips and the biggest portion of the $1,079,800 prize pool. The Lithuanian earned $168,883.15 for his efforts -- an even bigger score than will be enjoyed by those finishing shy of the top 36 in the WSOP Main. Here's the story of how Bagočius did it.

It took just over five hours for the money bubble to burst, and with 810 players left two-time Super Tuesday champion ekziter was sitting atop the counts.

About two-and-a-half hours after that the field had shrunk to 100 players. ekziter was still on the first page of the counts with above average chips, while Danilo "dans170'" de Lima Demetrio had pushed way ahead of the field to grab the lead.

By the time they were approaching the 10-hour mark just 18 players were left, by which point ekziter (25th, $2,645.51) and Danilo "dans170'" de Lima Demetrio (22nd, $2,645.51) had each been sent railward and kpl_ole86 had moved into first position with more than 6 million.

Sugay777 (18th), Jsapessoa (17th), and Pavalinya (16th) were the next out, each earning $3,185.41. acesover333 (15th), marceld2v8 (14th), and zulu321 (13th) followed, earning $4,805.11 apiece. Then kinga1234309 (12th), Erebgil_bg (11th), and Vitalijs "zavor" Zavorotnijs (10th) were successively eliminated, with each cashing for $6,424.81.

With eventual winner Bagočius the new chip leader with nearly 13.7 million and the tournament's 11-hour mark approaching, the final table was underway.

Seat 1: kpl_ole86 (Norway) -- 2,668,385
Seat 2: Georgios "GeoManousos" Sotiropoulos (Austria) -- 2,339,622
Seat 3: roppengalle (Norway) -- 7,495,295
Seat 4: Cichosza (Poland) -- 4,690,939
Seat 5: toddyjnr (Ireland) -- 10,191,750
Seat 6: sun-of-god (Israel) -- 3,192,040
Seat 7: dustin1980 (Costa Rica) -- 4,985,242
Seat 8: Mantas "bagoch" Bagočius (Lithuania) -- 13,692,971
Seat 9: Brøndbøh (Denmark) -- 4,733,756

Among those left was Georgios "GeoManousos" Sotiropoulos, who in the last year has won both a Super Tuesday and a Sunday Million. Alas for Sotiropoulos, he entered the final table as the short stack, and after a while he was open-raising all in a stack of just under 2.64 million (a little less than nine big blinds) from under the gun and getting one caller in toddyjnr from a couple of seats over. Sotiropoulos had A♥Q♣ and was racing versus toddyjnr's 9♦9♠, but a nine fell on the flop and by the turn Sotiropoulos was drawing dead to finish ninth.

About 10 minutes later the blinds were up to 200K/400K when kpl_ole86 pushed all in for just 386,345 from middle position and was up against both sun-of-god calling from the small blind and dustin1980 checking from the big.

The flop came 8♦5♣6♥ and a bet from sun-of-god scattered dustin1980. sun-of-god had 6♣5♠, having flopped two pair, while kpl_ole86 had A♦T♠. The 2♦ fell on the turn, making the river meaningless for kpl_ole86 who was done in eighth.

Fifteen more minutes passed, then it was Brøndbøh open-pushing from the button for just over 3.82 million (not quite eight BBs) with J♣9♦ and a super short Cichosza calling all in just over 840,000 with J♠8♦ after posting the big blind. The board rolled out 6♣7♦K♥T♥Q♥, giving Brøndbøh a straight and ending Cichosza's run in seventh.

The final six pushed onward, then in the last hand before the break that came at the 11-and-a-half-hour mark, sun-of-god min-raised from the button, then dustin1980 called all in with the just under 190,000 left after posting the small blind. sun-of-god had A♣J♦ and dustin1980 Q♦9♦. The community cards came 3♦A♠8♣2♥A♦, which meant trips for sun-of-god and a sixth-place finish for dustin1980.

The final five spent the break talking about the possibility of a deal, but play resumed as scheduled and soon Brøndbøh was pushing all in from UTG for just over 6.13 million. It folded to toddyjnr on the button who reraised for more, and the blinds got out. Brøndbøh had K♣T♥ but needed help against toddyjnr's A♣K♦. The board came nine-high -- 2♥8♣9♠9♦6♦ -- and Brøndbøh was on the rail in fifth.

About 15 minutes after that hand the blinds had increased to 400K/800K when roppengalle open-raised all in for just over 2.05 million from the small blind and toddyjnr called from the next seat. roppengalle had J♠7♥ and toddyjnr A♦T♣, and the K♠K♦J♦A♣9♣ board meant roppengalle had been eliminated in fourth.

Mantas "bagoch" Bagočius continued to maintain the lead to start three-handed play with almost 24.3 million while toddyjnr had just over 15 million and sun-of-god almost 14.7 million.

A few hands later toddyjnr would grab the lead after using A♦8♣ to double through Bagočius's K♣J♠. Then with the blinds still 400K/800K, bagoch min-raised to 1.6 million from the button, sun-of-god shoved for 13,668,067 from the big blind, and Bagočius called.

sun-of-god had 9♣9♠ but had run into a better pair as Bagočius turned over J♠J♦. The Q♦9♦Q♥Q♠8♦ board gave both full houses, but with second-best it was a third-place finish for sun-of-god.

That hand gave Mantas "bagoch" Bagočius the chip lead once more to start heads-up play with just over 31.6 million to toddyjnr's stack of a little more than 22.3 million. They played one small hand, then on the next bagoch opened for almost 1.9 million, toddyjnr shoved for 21,772,782, and Bagočius called the push.

toddyjnr: 3♦3♥
bagoch: 8♠8♦

It was another situation involving two pocket pairs, and once again Bagočius had the better of it. The board came T♦4♣T♥, then T♣, then 4♠, once again making full houses for both players with Bagočius again coming out ahead to win the pot. toddyjnr came one spot shy of the win, while Bagočius was the Sunday Million champion.

Congratulations to Mantas "bagoch" Bagočius for besting all to win this week's Milly and that cool $168K-plus first prize.
