Sunday Million: Second chance sees DrAnubis top three-way deal for $130K

Second chances don't come around all that often. When they do, you'd better be in position to take advantage of them.

The United Kingdom's DrAnubis had a chance at a Sunday Million title earlier this year, entering the final table second in chips but eventually falling in fifth place after making an aggressive play and running into a pair of queens. This week DrAnubis returned to the final of the Sunday Million at the other end of the chip counts but came out on the right side of a few aggressive plays, making the most of this case of Sunday Million rebirth by taking down the title.

This week's field slipped a bit past the guarantee mark with 5,285 entries. That was good for a $1,057,000 prize pool with 728 players cashing and more than $150,000 waiting up top.

The blinds and antes were up to 125K/250K/25K when xiaoyyy made a desperation raise with A♥ 2♠. Past Sunday Warm-Up finalist and two-time Super Tuesday finalist O''Pazzzo" called for another big blind and a half with J♠ 3♠. O''Pazzzo" made a Broadway straight on the first four cards of the T♥ K♠ Q♥ A♠ 6♥ board, busting xiaoyyy on the bubble to set up this final table lineup:

Seat 1: DrAnubis (3,913,700 in chips)
Seat 2: s1cktiTs (711,992 in chips)
Seat 3: Beckinnz (11,433,900 in chips)
Seat 4: LeBroHbKA (5,740,798 in chips)
Seat 5: julesdAA (5,281,784 in chips)
Seat 6: LOLDOLPHIN (2,861,154 in chips)
Seat 7: O''Pazzzo" (11,454,885 in chips)
Seat 8: AaronBeen (5,197,747 in chips)
Seat 9: Petelekinho (6,254,040 in chips)

Brazil's s1cktiTs limped into the final table with a chip stack worth less than three big blinds and shoved with 9♣ 7♣ on the button on the very first hand. LeBroHbKA called with J♦ 8♣ in the big blind, but a seven on the flop gave s1cktiTs the double to 1.7M. One stolen pot gave s1cktiTs 2.1M in the big blind on the next orbit, and the player from Brazil called with A♦ Q♦ when serial Super Tuesday finalist Aaron "AaronBeen" Been shoved with 9♥ 9♠ in the cutoff. With no aces or queens and one diamond too few on the 6♥ 2♦ K♣ K♠ 4♦ board, s1cktiTs left in ninth.

Four hands later the blinds and antes rose to 150K/300K/30K and the action folded around the table to the small blind, where SCOOP 2016 finalist LOLDOLPHIN shoved for 1.7M with K♦ 4♠. O''Pazzzo" called with 9♣ 8♠ in the big blind and went from strength to strength, improving to a pair of eights and finally a nine-high straight on the 7♦ 5♥ 8♦ 7♥ 6♣ board, sending LOLDOLPHIN out in eighth.

SCOOP 2015 finalist julesdAA was the new short stack and managed a desperate double-up just a few hands later, catching a nine on the river to win with J♦ 9♠ against the Q♠ 7♥ of O''Pazzzo". But O''Pazzzo" picked up J♣ J♠ on the next hand and successfully isolated original raiser and past Sunday Warm-Up finalist LeBroHbKA, who had jammed for 2.9M with A♦ 8♣. The 4♣ 2♦ 2♥ 6♠ 7♠ board gave O''Pazzzo" the 6.4M-chip pot and busted LeBroHbKA in seventh.

O''Pazzzo" was dealt Q♣ Q♦ on the button on the very next hand, but Petelekinho's A♣ A♥ in the big blind held up for a double to 16.1M. Petelekinho only enjoyed the fruits of that pot for a moment, though - DrAnubis jammed with A♣ 4♠ in the big blind after Petelekinho opened with A♠ K♠ and went runner-runner to make a wheel straight on the 7♥ 3♥ J♠ [5c ]2♥ board. Then julesdAA's K♦ Q♦ flopped a king to outrun Petelekinho's A♦ Q♣ for a 10.3M-chip double, taking the Brazilian's stack back down to a sixth-place 6.3M.

The blinds soon moved up to 200K/400K/40K, and O''Pazzzo" took a hit that proved to be the beginning of the end. O''Pazzzo" called in the cutoff seat when Beckinnz raised to 1.2M under the gun and then called small bets on the 7♣ 7♦ K♣ flop, 5♠ turn, and 2♥ river. Beckinnz showed down 9♣ 9♥ and collected the 14.8M-chip pot when O''Pazzzo" mucked.

Talk of a deal started up with the table six-handed, but a holdout kept the discussion from beginning. Meanwhile, Aaron Been chopped a pot shortly afterward with A♠ Q♠ to Beckinnz's A♥ K♣ when the board gave both players sevens and deuces, putting their aces into play as kickers. Then O''Pazzzo" and Petelekinho traded double-ups in back-to-back coin-flip situations, leaving O''Pazzzo" the short stack with 4.6M. The next time O''Pazzzo" was in the cutoff, the player from the Netherlands shoved with A♣ T♦ and drew a call from DrAnubis in the small blind with A♠ Q♣. DrAnubis won with a pair of queens when the board came 9♦ Q♦ 4♥ 3♥ 7♦, and O''Pazzzo" left in sixth.

DrAnubis continued to climb the leaderboard, calling with T♦ T♠ in the small blind following julesdAA's all-in bet with A♦ Q♦ under the gun. julesdAA made three of a kind on the Q♥ T♥ 3♦ 8♦ Q♣ board, but DrAnubis's tens full of queens earned the 12.4M-chip win. With that, julesdAA bowed out in fifth.

Deal talk sprung up again with julesdAA gone and the table down to four, but after about five minutes of disagreement the tournament clock was running again. The table remained four-handed thanks to the short stack winning a series of last-stand situations. First Petelekinho's K♠ Q♦ topped AaronBeen's T♦ T♠. Then AaronBeen's A♣ 4♥ beat DrAnubis's A♦ K♠ with fours full of sixes. And finally Petelekinho called all-in with K♦ Q♦ in the big blind after AaronBeen shoved in the small with T♠ 8♣, making a flush on the turn of the T♦ J♦ 3♠ 7♦ Q♣ board to seize the 18.2M-chip pot and the overall lead.

AaronBeen was left with 4.5M, good for a little less than eight big blinds, and he moved it all in with A♠ 2♠ on the button on the following hand. DrAnubis called with A♣ 5♦ in the big blind and fell behind when the Q♦ 4♣ 2♥ flop gave AaronBeen a pair of deuces. But the 5♥ turn put DrAnubis back ahead with a pair of fives, and the 8♠ river sank AaronBeen in fourth.

It took just one hand for discussion of a deal to pop back up, and the third time proved to be the charm. Within four minutes the remaining players had agreed to split up the prize money according to ICM and leave $20,000 on the table for the winner, and within 10 minutes they would put this week's Sunday Million to bed.

Beckinnz got the smallest share of the deal as the shortest stack when it was made, but Petelekinho traded places with Beckinnz shortly afterward. Beckinnz min-raised with A♦ 5♥ on the button and called all-in after Petelekinho shoved with A♥ 8♦ in the small blind, then made a pair of fives on the 3♠ 5♦ 2♠ 9♦ T♣ board to double up to 19.6M chips. Left with 5.5M and less than 10 big blinds, Petelekinho put it all behind A♥ Q♠ a few hands later, moving in over the top of DrAnubis's opener with 5♥ 5♠. The board came K♣ J♥ 9♥ 7♦ K♥, the fives held, and Petelekinho left in third.

Four hands later DrAnubis opened on the button with A♥ K♦ and shoved after Beckinnz re-raised in the big blind. Beckinnz called with 4♦ 4♥ and made a set on the 4♣ T♠ Q♣ flop, moving into a position to double to 41M and hold a nearly four-to-one chip lead with the title and extra cash on the line. DrAnubis's one hope was to hit a gutshot draw to a Broadway straight, and while the 6♦ didn't deliver it, the J♦ on the river did. The straight beat the set, and this week's Sunday Million reached its end.

Congratulations are due to all three players involved in the deal, with Petelekinho earning $102,943.08 in third and Beckinnz claiming $96,801.30 in second. And special congratulations are due to DrAnubis, who truly made the most a rare opportunity, earning the extra $20K on the table for a $130,7172.16 payday.
