Sunday Million: tzeskobar denies Bernardo "bedias" Dias a second Sunday Million title

Only ten people in the history of the Sunday Million have won it twice. Most recently, Canada's DaGoddfather joined the two-timers club, earning his second title in May of this year. Tonight, Bernardo "bedias" Dias, one of Brazil's most successful poker pros, had a chance to become the eleventh. Dias won the Million in March 2014 for $233k and tonight marked his fourth trip to the Sunday Million final table (he finished fourth in October 2009 and seventh in January 2015). Dias was 19th in chips out of 19 players remaining, but managed to rebuild his stack and made the final table in the middle of the pack. However, it was Greece's tzeskobar who played the role of spoiler tonight. Tzeskobar came to the final table with the chip lead, and although he relinquished it for a bit, he zoomed back to the top of the counts with five players remaining. He even survived bedias's late-game heater in which he won an 11 million-chip pot with pocket aces, then took out the fourth and third-place finishers within the space of a dozen hands. However, tzeskobar came roaring back heads-up and a heaven-sent two pair on the turn against bedias's pocket queens took him the final mile, denying Dias admission to that most exclusive club.

This edition of the Sunday Million drew 5,260 runners, the prize pool topping out at $1,052,000.00. 728 places were paid with $149,645.28 set aside for the champion.

The blinds were up to 80,000/160,000 with ten players remaining when the action folded around to short stack IL0609 in the small blind. He moved in for his last 896,074 with Q♥8♥ and big blind tzeskobar called with A♥6♥. Both players picked up flush draws on the T♥5♣5♥ flop, tzeskobar's the superior one with ace-high. The turn brought a blank with the 9♠ but the J♥ river made tzeskobar the nut flush and sent IL0609 to the rail on the final table bubble.

Final table chip counts

Seat 1: bedias (6,303,360 in chips)
Seat 2: lil-lj1981 (2,425,925 in chips)
Seat 3: ZeelandBoy (2,858,580 in chips)
Seat 4: Howié (7,334,377 in chips)
Seat 5: Caudillo1313 (8,901,175 in chips)
Seat 6: kokandija (9,855,752 in chips)
Seat 7: stockpig (2,044,508 in chips)
Seat 8: mattiehkd (2,845,912 in chips)
Seat 9: tzeskobar (10,030,411 in chips)

Tzeskobar brought the chip lead to the final table, but lost it on the third hand of play. He opened A♦Q♠ for a min-raise to 320,000, lil-lj1981 moved all-in for 2.3 million with 5♦5♠ and tzeskobar called. He lost the coinflip when the board ran out K♣6♦3♠6♥9♦ and lil-lj1981 doubled to 4.97 million.

Early in the next level, mattiehkd ended up on the wrong end of a cooler and was the first player eliminated at the final table. Mattiehkd open-shoved for 2.78 million with T♦T♣ only to run into Caudillo1313's pocket kings in the big blind. Mattiehkd did not improve and went out in ninth place. A short time later, stockpig exited on far worse terms. Stockpig open-shoved for 2.05 million on the button and bedias called from the big blind with A♠Q♦. Stockpig turned up A♥A♣, but was insta-crushed by the Q♠Q♣8♠ flop. The J♠ turn and the 9♠ river were no help, and stockpig departed in eighth place.

Meanwhile, ZeelandBoy was hanging on by a thread, holding only 1.6 million with the blinds up to 125,000/250,000. He doubled through kokandija when his pocket nines held up against pocket deuces, taking his stack up to 3.5 million, but he didn't hang onto it for long. The blinds rose to 150,000/300,000 and with the action folded to lil-lj1981 in the small blind, he moved in for 6.85 million. ZeelandBoy called all-in from the big blind with J♣T♣, but trailed lil-lj1981's A♠8♠. The ace-high held up on the 9♦7♣3♦4♣9♠ board and ZeelandBoy bid us adieu in seventh place, while lil-lj1981 moved up to 10.4 million in chips.

At this point, lil-lj1981 began to rally the remaining six to pause the action and discuss a potential deal. But as he was gathering support, tzeskobar opened for 600,000 from UTG and kokandija three-bet shoved for 5.86 million from the big blind. Tzeskobar called, his A♥K♠ dominating kikandija's A♠Q♥. Nothing changed on the T♠9♦8♥7♠2♣ board and kokandija hit the rail in sixth place, while tzeskobar took a dominating chip lead with 19.2 million.

Tzeskobar's ascent stalled all deal discussion. Lil-lj1981 frantically attempted to whip some votes, but bedias let him know he was no longer interested in looking at numbers now that tzeskobar had such a large chip lead. It turned out to be a very good move. A few minutes later, bedias opened pocket aces for a min-raise and Howié moved in for 8.72 million from middle position with pocket queens. Bedias called all-in for less. His aces held up on the jack-high board and bedias moved up to 9.78 million while Howié exited in fifth place.

Then, on the very next deal, tzeskobar limped in from the small blind and bedias raised to 1,296,857 from the big. Tzeskobar called and they saw a J♥T♠5♠ flop. Both players checked. The turn brought the J♣ and tzeskobar checked over to bedias, who bet 1,199,550. Tzeskobar called and they went to the river, which fell the 4♠. Tzeskobar checked a third time, bedias bet 2,986,570 and tzeskobar looked him up. Once again, bedias had A♠A♥. Tzeskobar mucked, unable to beat bedias's aces and jacks, and the Brazilian moved up to a strong second with 18.2 million chips to tzeskobar's 23 million.

Bedias's heater went into overdrive from there. Four hands later, Cuadillo1313 open-shoved for 5.92 million on the button and bedias called from the big blind. Bedias's 9♥9♣ held up against A♣K♠ and Caudillo1313 went out in fourth place. Six hands after that, lil-lj1981 moved in for his remaining 5.6 million with A♥8♦ on the button. Bedias called from the big blind with... A♣9♥. Bedias's kicker played on the K♥7♥4♠5♣T♠ board and lil-lj1981 had to settle for third place.

Heads-up chip counts

Seat 1: bedias (30,295,386 in chips)
Seat 9: tzeskobar (22,304,614 in chips)

After a few minutes of exchanging small pots, the blinds were up to 250,000/500,000 and bedias opened for 1,000,000 on the button. Tzeskobar three-bet to 3,000,000, bedias came back over the top for 7,984,565 and tzeskobar called. With over 16 million already in the pot, they went to the flop, which fell A♠7♦4♥. Tzeskobar checked and bedias checked behind. The turn came the J♣ and tzeskobar checked again. Bedias bet 3,178,560 and tzeskobar called. The river was the 5♥ and tzeskobar moved in for his remaining 13.42 million. Bedias gave up his hand and tzeskobar raked in the 22.4 million pot without a showdown.

Four hands later, bedias limped in on the button with Q♦9♦ and tzeskobar raised to 1.5 million. Bedias called and hit a boffo 9♠9♣4♠ flop. Tzeskobar checked and bedias slyly checked behind. The turn was the A♣ and tzeskobar checked again. This time, bedias made it 1,987,650 to go and tzeskobar called. The river was the 3♦ and tzeskobar checked a third time. Bedias moved all-in for 9.68 million and tzeskobar called. Bedias's trip nines were good against tzeskobar's A♠T♥ and he doubled to 26.44 million, essentially evening the chip counts again.

Two hands passed without incident and bedias had a 28.9 million to 23.7 million lead over tzeskobar when he picked up Q♦Q♣. He min-raised to 1,000,000, tzeskobar three-bet to 3,000,000, bedias four-bet to 7,984,650 and tzeskobar called. The flop came down T♦7♥5♣ and tzeskobar immediately moved all-in for 15,640,420. Bedias called. Tzeskobar turned over 3♠5♠, only bottom pair. However, bedias's world was crushed by the 3♥ that arrived on the turn, giving tzeskobar two pair. The 5♥ river added insult to injury as tzeskobar made fives full, and he took down the 47.3 million pot, cripping bedias.

Bedias's hope for a second Sunday Million title was snuffed out on the next hand. Tzeskobar open-shoved with K♥T♦ and bedias called all-in with 9♠9♣. Tzeskobar flopped a ten on the T♠3♠2♣4♦7♣ board and locked up the win, relegating bedias to second place.

Congratulations to Greece's tzeskobar on joining the ranks of Sunday Million champions! He picked up $149,645.28 for the win, while runner-up Bernardo "bedias" Dias earned $105,014.21.
