Call him champ: Icallany wins 3/22/11 Super Tuesday

Super Tuesday logo.pngThe first Super Tuesday of the spring saw 424 players pony up the $1,000+$50 buy-in, creating a total prize pool of $424,000. The top 54 finishers would split those dollars, with $81,365.60 due the winner.

During the first four hours of play the field was trimmed to 100 players, with those hitting the rail including Team PokerStars Pros David Williams (in 338th), Maxim Lykov (in 292nd), and Pat Pezzin (in 151st).

At that point John "kleath" Leathart held the top spot as the only player to have crested 100,000. Behind him were NLF21, Icallany, BlueKnight1, and mcc3991, all well behind and hovering between 55,000 and 65,000. Two members of Team PokerStars Online remained among the field as well, with Kwangsoo "PiS.ToTo" Lee just inside the top 10 and Mer "PeachyMer" Brit close to cracking the top 25.

About an hour later the cash bubble burst, with Lee and Brit both still among those in the hunt. By then NLF21 had moved out in front with more than 137,000, Icallany was next with about 102,000, followed by kleath, |I D DVS1 I|, and Reraiseallin.

Among the first to cash were Steve "mcnallyville" McNally (in 54th), Toby "810ofclubs" Lewis (in 49th), and Tom "kingsofcards" Marchese (in 47th), all of whom claimed $2,120 for their efforts. Nicolas "niccc" Chouity would go out shortly after in 39th for $2,332.

The next elimination came moments later in a hand that began with spencerman3 opening with a UTG raise. It folded around to PeachyMer in the small blind who shoved her 20-big blind stack all in, the big blind folded, and spencerman3 called. Brit showed 9♥8♥ and spencerman3 K♥Q♥, and while a nine flopped so did two kings. Two cards later Brit was typing "gg gla" as she hit the rail in 38th ($2,332).

The field continued to shrink, with John "kleath" Leathart taking a couple of hits, then getting knocked out in 33rd. carryhero, who made the final table of last fall's WCOOP Main Event, soon followed in 29th. And Craig "mcc3991" McCorkell went out in 28th. All three of those earned $2,544.

Other notables coming up shy of the final table included Adam "simmsux" Geyer in 25th ($2,968), Keven "Stammdogg" Stammen in 17th ($3,816), William "Altrum Altus" Reynolds in 16th ($3,816), and Andrey "Kroko-dill" Zaichenko in 14th ($4,664).

Finally Anthony "wwwBTHEREcom" Gregg knocked out spencerman3 in 10th place ($5.512) when his A♦K♦ outran the latter's pocket treys. After a little over seven-and-a-half hours of play, they were down to nine.

Seat 1: Sir_winalot9 -- 94,448
Seat 2: Icallany -- 416,443
Seat 3: fold_em_sho7 -- 281,003
Seat 4: inwooke -- 180,097
Seat 5: wwwBTHEREcom -- 435,433
Seat 6: Setherson2 -- 75,205
Seat 7: WhEADa -- 281,205
Seat 8: BizBills -- 155,924
Seat 9: Kwangsoo "PiS.ToTo" Lee (Team PokerStars Online) -- 200,242

Following that final table bubble hand, Gregg entered the final table with the chip lead, Icallany was close behind, and whEADa and Evan "fold_em_sho7" Lamprea virtually tied for third. But with the blinds still just 2,000/4,000, most players' stacks were deep and thus a lot of play still remained.

It would take almost 20 minutes for the first elimination of the final table to occur. It was the last hand just prior to the eight-hour break, and the blinds had moved to 2,400/4,800. The table folded around to Setherson2 in the small blind who shoved all in for 55,705 and WhEADa called from the big blind. Setherson2 had A♦3♥ but had ran into WhEADa's A♥9♥. The board came 2♦8♦7♠4♣2♠ and Setherson2 was eliminated in ninth.

More than a half-hour would pass before the next knockout. It looked for sure like inwooke would be the next to go. But in the space of just a half-dozen hands, inwooke survived three all-ins, the last of which saw almost all of BizBills' stack slide over into inwooke's pile.

Soon after BizBills was all in for just under one big blind against Icallany and fold_em_sho7 in the blinds. The pair checked down the K♥5♠2♦K♣2♠ board, then showed 5♦4♠ and 6♦5♣ respectively, giving both kings and fives, but fold_em_sho7's six kicker winning him the small pot. BizBills mucked the losing hand, his tourney ending with an eighth-place finish.

With the blinds 3,600/7,200, a newly-healthy inwooke open-shoved from the big blind for 128,038 and Anthony "wwwBTHEREcom" Gregg on his left made the call. inwooke showed 2♣2♥ versus Gregg's A♦9♠, and was still ahead with that baby pair following the Q♦6♥T♦ flop. But the 9♥ fell on the turn, and after the K♦ river inwooke was gone in seventh.

After an hour of play at the final table, both Gregg and Evan "fold_em_sho7" Lamprea had pushed well ahead of the other four remaining players, each nearing the 700,000-chip mark while the rest hovered at or below 200,000.

22mar11supertuesdaykwangsoolee.jpgLone remaining member of Team PokerStars Kwangsoo "PiS.ToTo" Lee soon slipped below 100,000 and to the back of the pack. Then, with the blinds 4,000/8,000, wwwBTHEREcom opened for 16,000 from early position and Lee shoved over the top from the button for 80,116. It folded to Icallany in the big blind who repopped it by shoving all in himself for 244,910, forcing a fold from wwwBTHEREcom.

Icallany showed A♥K♥, dominating PiS.ToTo's A♠8♣. The K♣Q♥9♠ flop made the situation worse for Lee, and while the 8♦ came on the turn the 4♠ river sealed it, sending Lee out in sixth.

A little later wwwBTHEREcom made a minimum-raise to 18,000 from the cutoff, WhEADa raised all in from the button for 214,410, then Sir_winalot9 reraised all in from the small blind for 288,626 total. wwwBTHEREcom got out, and Sir_winalot9 showed A♠Q♠, a good hand to have versus WhEADa's Q♣J♣. The community cards came 8♠7♦3♥A♦6♦, and WhEADa hit the rail in fifth.

The remaining four battled on into the night, and with the tourney approaching 10 hours a hand arose in which Icallany opened with a min-raise for 24,000 from UTG and got a caller in Sir_winalot9 in the big blind. The flop came A♣4♥3♦ and Sir_winalot9 checked. Icallany bet 24,000, then Sir_winalot9 made it 55,875. Icallany responded by shoving all in for 245,173 total, and Sir_winalot9 called with the 177,263 he had left.

Sir_winalot9 showed A♥5♥ for top pair and a gutshot to a wheel, while Icallany had A♦6♣, his kicker outpipping Sir_winalot9. The turn was the J♠ and the river the T♣ and the six played, meaning Sir_winalot9 was out in fourth.

With three left, it was still anyone's tourney. The blinds were still just 6,000/12,000. Evan "fold_em_sho7" Lamprea enjoyed the chip lead with more than 916,000 (76 big blinds), Anthony "wwwBTHEREcom" Gregg was next with about 665,000 (55 big blinds), and Icallany had just over 538,000 (45 big blinds).

The ten-hour break having arrived, there was a bit of chat while the players waited to resume the fight.

wwwBTHEREcom: fun battle guys
Icallany: yeah
Icallany: can't wait to take it down ;)

As it would turn out, Icallany had called it.

The three moved cautiously through the next level-and-a-half. A sequence of four straight walks suggested the night would be lasting much, much longer. Then suddenly came a huge three-way preflop all-in. First wwwBTHEREcom open-shoved from the button for 223,153, then Icallany reraised to 784,000 from the small blind and fold_em_sho7 called with his remaining 706,275.

Icallany A♣K♦
fold_em_sho7 A♠Q♠
wwwBTHEREcom 8♦8♣

A king could end it all right here and give the tourney to Icallany, but the board ended up coming all babies -- 5♥6♦2♣3♥6♣ -- giving wwwBTHEREcom the main pot, Icallany the side pot, and knocking fold_em_sho7 out in third place.

That hand left Icallany with about a 2-to-1 chip lead over Anthony "wwwBTHEREcom" Gregg, with 1,444,541 to Gregg's 675,459. On just the fourth hand between them, Icallany would flop a set of deuces, then turn a boat to claim the majority of wwwBTHEREcom's chips. And five hands after that -- almost 10-and-a-half hours after the first hands were dealt -- the end arrived.

The hand began with Icallany opening from the button with a 2x raise to 32,000, then Gregg pushed all in for 277,359 total. Living up to his name, Icallany called, showing J♣J♦ versus Gregg's Q♥4♥. The cards were swiftly pitched on the virtual felt -- 6♣9♦6♥A♣K♠ -- giving the tourney to Icallany.
