J_HasTheNuts has the Super Tuesday win and $67K
With so many of the world's best poker players in the Bahamas this week for the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, one may have assumed the field for this week's Super Tuesday would be slimmer than usual. That would have been wrong, as a solid crowd of 379 players turned out for the $300K guaranteed event. That number brought the prize pool up to $379,000 for the field, out of which 45 players would walk away with more than the original $1,000 buy-in.
And everyone wanted to win the 1/11/11 Super Tuesday because...well...it's a neato date on the calendar.
Play moved along and for more than seven hours before nearing the final table. During that time, four well-known players took part in the tournament and exited well before the money bubble. Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden departed in 316th place, followed by Alex "Allingomes" Gomes in 301st and Maxim Lykov in 267th. Team Online's Grayson "spacegravy" Physioc held on for awhile and finally left in 136th place.
Awhile later, during hand-for-hand action, two of the bigger stacks on Table 5 got involved. Plz be live raised and QcKimo called from the big blind to see the 8♠2♥9♠ flop. A series of raises and reraises ultimately led to QcKimo all-in and plz be live calling all-in with 8♦8♣. QcKimo showed 7♣6♣ and made that straight when the T♥ appeared on the turn to overcome the set of eights. The 5♣ on the river ended the hand, and plz be live bubbled the final table, taking home $5,685.00 for the tenth place finish.
Final table commenced with QcKimo lead
Near the end of Level 27, with blinds at 1,800/3,600 and a 450-chip ante, players began final table play with the following chip counts:
Seat 1: slimshaggy (163,705 in chips)
Seat 2: kbp33 (110,010 in chips)
Seat 3: RaineTech (96,372 in chips)
Seat 4: 1GENERAL_TAO (129,195 in chips)
Seat 5: QcKimo (542,398 in chips)
Seat 6: J_HasTheNuts (139,671 in chips)
Seat 7: Turko_man (269,587 in chips)
Seat 8: galgal11 (343,937 in chips)
Seat 9: moneyinbag (100,125 in chips)
Though there were plenty of chips in play, it didn't take long to see a big hand and the first elimination of the night. The ninth hand of the final table began with a raise from Turko_man and call from moneyinbag from the big blind. After the flop of 5♥J♦6♦, a raising war led to moneyinbag committing the remainder of chips with K♠J♠ and top pair, and Turko_man showed A♣6♠ for the pair of sixes. The 8♦ turn and A♠ river only served to give Turko_man a second pair and eliminate moneyinbag in ninth place with $6,632.50.
A little time passed, during which 1GENERAL_TAO doubled through galgal11, and a short while later, another big hand developed. A series of raises between J_HasTheNuts and slimshaggy, the latter in the small blind, ended with slimshaggy all-in for his tournament life with K♠K♣, but it just so happened that J_HasTheNuts turned over A♠A♦. The board was an uneventful 6♦4♦7♣2♦J♦, and slimshaggy stood up to leave with $9,096.00 for eighth place.
After kbp33 doubled through QcKimo to stay alive, it was RaineTech who began to work his short stack. A double-up through QcKimo helped, and a much more sizeable double through 1GENERAL_TAO put him in an even better position. But the next time wasn't so lucky. RaineTech pushed more than 200K chips with T♠T♥ against the K♣Q♠ of J_HasTheNuts. The flop of 7♣K♦3♠ gave J_HasTheNuts the advantage, and the board finished with J♦ and 5♣. RaineTech departed in seventh place with $12,886.00.
J_HasTheNuts and the chip lead
More double-ups were in order, as kbp33 did it through galgal11, 1GENERAL_TAO through J_HasTheNuts, and Turko_man through 1GENERAL_TAO. But galgal11 was short-stacked, and though a double-up through kbp33 allowed a bit more play, another move was in order. It happened when galgal11 took a chance with 2♦2♣ against the Q♠A♦ of J_HasTheNuts, and when the flop came 6♠6♣6♦, it looked promising for the short stack. The 3♠ on the turn changed nothing, but the A♣ on the river made a better full house for J_HasTheNuts, and another player was gone. Galgal11, who finished in seventh in a May 2010 Super Tuesday, did one better this week with a sixth place finish, which was worth $16,676.00.
A dozen hands later, J_HasTheNuts was at it again, this time battling with kbp33 all the way through the T♥7♣A♦ flop and J♥ turn. It was then that kbp33 pushed all-in with A♥J♣ for the two pair, but J_HasTheNuts called with K♠Q♣ for the turned straight. The K♦ on the river ended the tournament for kbp33, who walked with $21,603.00 for fifth place.
Just into the ninth hour, it was clear that the tables turned. QcKimo was relegated to third place out of four remaining players, and J_HasTheNuts was in a solid chip lead over the pack.
Play slowed during four-handed play, but it was eventually Turko_man who decided to battle J_HasTheNuts. Turko_man made the all-in reraise with A♣7♥, but J_HasTheNuts called with a dominating A♠T♥. The board came 2♣A♦J♦3♦6♣. The best kicker held up to eliminate Turko_man in fourth place with $31,267.50.
1GENERAL_TAO entered three-handed play as the short stack, but a crucial double-up through QcKimo put him in a solid second place:
That left QcKimo with the need to make a move soon, and that move came when QcKimo pushed with Q♠9♠. 1GENERALTAO was there to make the call with J♥J♠, and the board only helped that hand when it came K♠3♠J♣4♥7♥ to provide the set of jacks. QcKimo was out of the tournament in third place with $41,690.00.
J versus the General
The final two players began their heads-up match and immediately decided to use their time banks in order to contact support and pause the tournament to discuss a deal. They then sat out until a host came to the chat box to assist, but their initial heads-up starting stacks were as follows:
Seat 4: 1GENERAL_TAO (768,206 in chips)
Seat 6: J_HasTheNuts (1,126,794 in chips)
After some discussion and wheeling-dealing, the two agree that J_HasTheNuts would take $67,000.00 and 1GENERAL_TAO would agree to $61,291.50. It was also then discovered that 1GENERAL_TAO was playing from his room at the PCA in the Bahamas, but his opponent wasn't there due to passport issues. Both players admitted to being quite tired and looked to wrap up the tournament quickly.
That was exactly what happened. The first hand saw 1GENERAL_TAO double through J_HasTheNuts with sevens over A-6, the second hand reversed it when J_HasTheNuts doubled with 5-4 over the A-8 of 1GENERAL_TAO, and J_HasTheNuts doubled once more, this time into the lead, with J-2 over 6-3.
The fourth hand of the match ended the tournament. 1GENERAL_TAO pushed with 8♥4♥, and J_HasTheNuts had him covered with J♣5♥. The board came 3♥6♣8♠J♠A♥, and the pair of jacks eliminated 1GENERAL_TAO in second place, for which he received $61,291.50.
J_HasTheNuts did, indeed, have the nuts in the form of the Super Tuesday title and $67,000.00 in cash.
