Super Tuesday 12/27 - OBVAMENTS wins over $78,000, obv
The final Super Tuesday for 2011 ends an interesting year for PokerStars this evening. The 404-player strong field created a $404,000 prize pool with 45 players making the money with the winner expecting a holiday reward of over $78,000 expected with the tournament's conclusion sometime early Wednesday. If you're keeping track of home or do writing a poker pub quiz, note OBVAMENTS as the winner of the last Super Tuesday for 2011, earning $78,174.
Team PokerStars was out in force today, attempting to pick up a final major online cash in 2011. PokerStars Challenger George "gkap13" Kapalas (pictured below) was the only player branded with the PokerStars symbol to make the money, eventually succumbing in 17th place. He outlasted fellow Challengers PokerStars Challengers Stavros "IDOLLS" Kalfas
and Alexis "J0hnny_Dr@m@" Zervos. The other Team PokerStars players spotted in tonight's Super Tuesday field were Team PokerStars Online player Diego "vgreen22" Brunelli, and Team PokerStars players Martin Staszko, Pat Pezzin and Johnny Lodden.
The final table was just one player away, with hand-for-hand play lasted just a single hand to get down to nine players. Blinds were at 2,000/4,000 with an ante of 500 as hopes for a Greek player at the final table down to xalkidas, holding 96,510 chips. An opening raise by Sheeter 200 was met by xalkidas moving all-in for their tournament life. OBVAMENTS was next to act and decided to move all-in as well, leaving the rest of the table to fold. OBVAMENTS revealed 8♦8♥ as xalkidas showed K♥Q♥. The first three cards were the 9♦6♦3♠, the 8♣ on the turn ended xalkidas's chances of winning the coinflip, cashing in for $6,060 to set up at table 13. For one of these players, it would be their lucky number tonight.

The first player knocked out at the last Super Tuesday final table was sir_winalot9, unable to repeat their Super Tuesday success from March. The blinds were up to 2,400/4,800 with an ante of 600 as sir_winalot9 was down to under 24,000 chips when moving in with K♣J♥. A min-raise by N1clasM was not matched by any of the players, relieved when the A♠A♣ was turned over. N1clasM flopped a set: A♥J♣3♠ with the 2♠ on the turn ending sir_winalot9's dreams of a double. The K♠ on the river meant a payday of $7,070 as eight remained.
The eighth place finisher was daitemillion, getting an email from the PokerStars cashier alerting them of the $9,696 added to their account. The blinds increased to 2,800/5,600 with an ante of 700 as daitemillion opened the action, raising all in for 49,549 chips. N1clasM flatted, then gilcoe re-raised to 106,400 and N1clasM called. The A♠ T♦ 7♣
flop featured a check by N1clasM, then gilcoe moved all in as N1clasM decided to pass. Cards on their backs and gilcoe was well out in front with their A♦K♠ against the A♥2♥ of daitemillion. The turn closed the door for daitemillion as the K♣ appeared, and the 3♦ on the river brings the field down to seven.
Gilcoe sent another player to the virtual rail a few hands later, this time it was TIESO.ES without any chips, receiving a five-figure cash of $13,736. The blinds bumped up to 3,200/6,400 with an ante of 800 when TIESO.ES opened from UTG with an all-in move of their remaining 52,354 stack. Only gilcoe called and once again was out in front with A♣K♦, dominating TIESO.ES' A♠T♥. The board ran out A♥7♠4♣K♥ 9♦ as gilcoe cementing their hold on second place to leave a sextet of contenders.
The field fell to five in a Russian v Russian hand as TimTainer picked up $17,776 for sixth place. Another leap in the levels meant action was now 3,600/7,200 with the ante of 900. From UTG +1, mypokerf shoved for 134,626 chips with K♣K♥ as TimTainer called from the big blind with 7♣7♦. The board ran out J♠5♦4♦8♣ A♣ and TimTainer was sent on a bike, trike, or some other mode of transportation.
A brief intermission as Sheeter 200 appeared to be the next casualty, but a fortunate flop kept them in contention:
Gilcoe claimed another scalp by dispatching mypokerf in fifth place, earning $23,028. Blinds moved up to 4,000/8,000 with an ante of 1,000 as mypokerf moved all-in from UTG for 99,130 chips with K♥Q♥ as gilcoe called from the small blind with A♠Q♠. Five cards later and the result stayed the same: A♣6♣5♣4♣ K♠ leaving a quartet guaranteed over $33,000.
Just like that the final four were halved in just a few hands. Collecting a payday full of threes was Sheeter 200, officially earning $33,333. Action now at 4,500/9,000 with each player kicking in 1,125 as OBVAMENTS opened from the button to 21,200 holding J♠J♥. Sheeter 200 looked down at A♦Q♠ and re-raised to 63,000. OBVAMENTS didn't seem to mind that decision, four-betting to put Sheeter 200 all in for their remaining 270,000 chips for the time-honored tradition of a pair v overcards. In this sample, the pair held up when the five cards pitched onto the felt were the K♥ 7♣ 2♦ 4♣ 6♠ leaving a trio determined for the first place prize.
Three hands later, N1clasM's dreams were dashed, consoled with a score full of fours, $44,444 to be exact. A blind v blind confrontation started with N1clasm min-raising from the small blind with 3♥3♣. Gilcoe looked at their screen, showing 9♦9♣ and set N1clasM all-in for their remaining 216,457 chips. Maybe not the hands you expect to see in that situatoin, but gilcoe doesn't mind as their pair holds up on the A♥6♠5♥8♣5♦ board to hold the chip lead going into heads-up play.
Eventually the heads-up battle between gilcoe from Brazil and OBVAMENTS from Mexico in a battle for Latin American supremacy (maybe) lasted for over an hour. Action commenced with gilcoe winning many of the early hands at one point holding an over 5-1 advantage. That lead would be gone after a pair of OBVAMENTS double-ups, first with 9-9 against K-8 all-in pre-flop. The next hand was the first seven-figure pot of the tournament, as gilcoe making a decision with a bad hand:
Gilcoe attempted to close the gap, eventually getting to an approximately 3-2 deficit, but against making a move with a junky hand proved to be their downfall. The blinds now stood at 8,000/16,000 with an ante of 2,000 as gilcoe raised to 35,200 as OBVAMENTS called to see the flop. The 9♣8♣4♦ board had OBVAMENTS check-calling the 55,800 chip bet from gilcoe. The Q♣ on the turn saw OBVAMENTS check-call once again, this time for a bet of 111,600. The river was the 3♥ as for a third time OBVAMENTS checked. Gilcoe decided this time to make a huge bet, going all in for 515,486 chips. The decision was obvious for OBVAMENTS, making the call with J♥T♥, making a straight on the turn. Gilcoe's two cards? T♠6♥ for a pair of busted straight draws.
The last few hands for gilcoe appeared unconventional, but they're the one taking down $58,580 dollars for their runner-up finish. Meanwhile it was a victorious moment for OBVAMENTS, earning $78,174 in the last $1,050 event of 2011.
